No Filipinos at the Open?

Lee Van is still considered Filipino (no?)... add Alex, Shan, Wang Can (after what he did at the 10 ball and tunica events earlier this year) Mika and a few others add some top side talent ... several world champs.. several international champs, several multiple US Open winners...

There will be some great matches at the Open this year. I agree i'll miss seeing Efren if he doesn't play this year especially since he played so well last year. Efren's match against Darren Appleton last year was one of the best i've seen at the Open in a long time, but there will be plenty of quality matches to see.

Do you mean this match  --- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSe6troPrzg

A true Efren ending. He got lucky, again.

I was ringside for that match and Efron did look at that possibility prior to making that improbable 9-ball. It was lucky but the best ever to play the game gets luckier than lesser talents. Must be a reason for that. Appleton got lucky to leave Efron where he did and admitted as such. I asked Mark Wilson (I believe this is his name) he's the guy that announced the match for Accu-Stats if that was the best match he ever saw (and he's seen thousands) and he said yes. If Efren doesn't show it will be a huge disappointment. Watching Efron alone makes it worthwhile. No one else plays the way Efron does. His creativity is beyond what mortals can muster. SVB and Appleton play like robots. Efron plays like Michaelangelo.

I have seen tons of players. The best I have ever seen is Efren.

I like One-Pocket best, and there he truly is a Magician!;)

The best One Pocket match I ever seen was Efren playing Jason Miller about 10 years ago. Efren won the match race to 3 in about 45 minutes.

I think it was 28 minutes-i wandered down there just a little late and it was over. Jayson made 2 balls-both in Efren's hole.

The people leaving the match were still in awe and talking about Efren's perfection that day

If you're talking about the year efren beat alex twice in a row to get to play miller, the 2 alex matches were much better, maybe 2 of the greatest matches in one pocket!

Jay, any news from Dennis or Carlo if he will be participating this year's open?

NO, after having their checks bounce and going through a lot of grief to finally get paid last year. They have good reason not to go, as do the other filipino and Chinese players. You can make all the excuses you want, but they doesn't change the reality of what has been going on there for years.

That was it.

I was there.

Efren was as close to perfect that day as I have ever seen pool played.

I purchased the week from accu-stats and I am bummed they are not playing. With that said I wouldn't cross the road to play in a tournament if I had to beg and wait any amount of time for my winnings. And these guys have to travel across the world. I am surprised any one is playing in this tournament.

Dennis Orcullo, Carlo Biado, JL Chang, and Ko Pin Yi are, in my opinion, four of the world's ten best nine ball players and Wu Jiaqing just might be, too.

Their absence would be a very big deal to me.

Perhaps if they see all players paid promptly in this event, they'll play in 2014.

We all know you had a long history with the US Open and I am sure it hurts you as much as anyone for things to have turned out this way,for the players the fans and the promoter.
Maybe now some of these folks will understand that it isn't just "rumor mongering".
Or maybe they won't? lol

Filipinos dominated the top ten last year at this tournament.

Five of the top six were filipinos. I'm not sure if any of them came back (maybe Lee Van). Looks like the field dropped from 216 players last year (we had full fields as recently as four years ago) to 172 players this year. At this rate he will be back down to 32 players in another few years.

Which is a shame

It's really too bad for the players. Barry has no one to blame but himself. I'm not even sure a positive result this year will be enough to lure all that talent back. The truth is, the Open is barely hanging on, IMO. They are one small mistake from repeating their no/slow pay history. And, it will only take one more mistake to doom this event. Again, my opinion only.

One thing is for sure. The most asked question of Barry this week will be, "where are the Pinoys?"

Right. Orcollo, Parica, Alcano, Reyes, Pagulayan and SVB were the top 6 players from last year's open.
To add to that, there were 5 Filipinos on the last-16 of this year's WPC, Biado in the semis then Gabica in the finals. Then Dennis and Lee Van winning the world cup of pool. These are just some of the reasons why I'm disappointed that a lot of top Pinoy players are not joining the US Open.

There is a large Filipino population in this area. Each time the Filipino champions are in the house, they have a huge fan base there.

It is a shame they can't make it this year. I think everybody is feeling financial pressures in the pool world. With more and more tournaments occuring overseas in Asian countries, it could be that the Filipino champs are more selective and pick and choose where they are going to travel.

Does anybody know if Spanish Mike Lebron is there at this year's Open? Sometimes he sponsors/backs a few Filipino champinos. I did not see his name on the player list, but I thought maybe he would be there as a railbird.

When the Filipinos are in the house, they're always occupying their time playing games. Here's a cute shot of Efren, Santos, and Bustie playing cards between Open matches.
