no more free water at Hanks

I think the idea of pay toilets is pretty good and also he should put in parking meters in the parking lot. That will help as well. Lots of great ideas to help out the poor pool hall owners. Funny because the place I play at the owner owns the entire strip mall and it is full of tenants. There was some talk at the leagues about raising our fees to cover the new cloth on his tables, needless to say that did not get the nod from the players. He already charges too much for the alcohol and has driven off most of his regular patrons. When leagues are playing the bar is usually empty, as it is almost all the time, he is overcharging for all the alcohol. Eventually it will all work out one way or another...

I by no means have a bunch of extra cash to spend. But I also buy 2-3 Pepsi each night, $1 each and tip $1 each time if its brought to me. we have 7' diamonds and 50 cents a game. So tonight I will practice and play for 3 hours and have 3 Pepsi for about $15 including tip. Gas will cost me another $8. My team practices this night and helps support the place we play at even though we have 2 other places with eight diamonds each within a few miles . I have a table in the basement I play on most other nights besides league. Bottom line is don't be a freeloader help keep your room alive.

8up I would have to say you completely suck....

My statement has nothing todo with your post only with the fact that you have 3 places to choose from with diamonds within a few miles and I see your location as TENNESSEE!!!!!!

Knoxville is down to Bailey's Sports bar(overpriced w/ junk tables) Rack and Run(valley bar boxes) and KBC(worn out cloth and only 2 decent tables)....... I am at a complete loss as to how with an area population over 600k we can't manage to have a decent room......

Read my other post too please. But, I just have to say this- think about what you wrote above... my table time, which here is $8.50 and hour, won't pay the bills. According to you, it does nothing to help out the room owner. But....... paying a dollar for a bottle of water that he probably paid 50 cents for WILL help support the room???? I'm spending a lot more than you, and you want to call me cheap because I won't pay a dollar for water??

I'm really curious now, how much are you going to start complaining when the room owner makes you start paying for all the water you are flushing down his toilets???

Since you felt like calling me out on the subject, I'll reply.

Note how in my post I said "buy a $1 bottle of water or a cheap fountain soda". I didn't insist that YOU buy a bottle of water if you don't want to. All I'm saying is to support your pool room if you want it to be there. Buy something, anything, instead of cheaping out. If every customer made one small purchase instead of coming in and expecting a free glass of water, the business would be more likely to survive.

This applies to any business of any sort that you wish to see remain in your town. Support them. Because if you don't, they just might not be there tomorrow. That was the point of my post.

The water in the toilet isn't a reasonable argument. It just isn't. Toilets are required by law for public places in most cases. It is the nature of the device. You don't expect to be given a free glass of tap water anywhere else you frequent (besides restaraunts) do you? Why should a pool hall be any different, even if they do use tap water in their toilets?

Sorry if that offends you Neil. You seem to be of the belief that because you might be "in action" at some point, that makes you a better customer than me or the next guy. Sorry, but that seems to be yesterday.... but that goes back to gambling at the heart of whether or not a player is a "real pool player" or not. And that's a whole other argument.

I appreciate all the help you give here, Neil. I just don't agree with you on this subject.

I was wrong I forgot we have another place that has 8 diamonds in it but I never go there lol

This is depressing. I spent an hour chatting up Hank last month, trying to sell him on fixing his sign out front (still says Paradise Billiards, except that weather has erased a couple letters) and the sign over the back door, Family Fun Center. That, I'd encourage him to keep, for history's sake.

Looks to me like he's investing in improving the room, however. A billiard table arrived after an absence of many years. It's doubtful that Hank's can return to its glory years of the late '50s and '60s, but who can say?

Next time I drop in I'll make it a point to carry in my own water, and I'll make sure Hank sees it.
I hope he throws you and your water out the front door.... You bring your own candy to movies as well I sure... Nit

3 years working as a houseman, yep, never saw how deadbeat nits operate. No sir....

Look at your own posts so far. You've complained about the audicity of someone charging a measly buck for a bottle of water, and right in those same posts there's disparaging comments about how much you pay in table time. Absolutely spot on typical of the mindset.
Spot on.... He's a nit in sheep's clothing

It could be worse...they could be charging you $1 per urinal use. Beer drinkers look out. Don't break the seal!

Pro Sporting Event CHARGE 5-7 Bucks for the same bottle of H2O, I guess a buck is a DEAL at the Pool Room. I bring my own Diet Rite Soda, or Water to the Community Room that also gets a buck for a Water, or Soda in the CAN.

I think the $1.00 bottle Water is a way the Pool Room owner can help pay the rent, if this cause his customers to go elsewhere, there is a message there.
Bring your own??? What a joke

$1 bottled water

I do not know Hank or have ever played in his hall. There might be a number of reasons why there is no more glasses and a pitcher of ice water for free. Maybe he can not afford for someone to wash the glasses and fill up the pitcher of water. Maybe the wait stuff are complaining that they do not make enough to live on because not enough people are spending money on drinks. Instead they shoot pool and drink free water. Maybe the health department might have a health code on leaving open containers of water out for anyone sick person to cough on and leave their germs for the next person.

There is too many maybe and no answers. If I was a local at Hank's, I would just ask guy why there is no more free ice water. I am pretty sure he will tell you and it is just that simple.

The original post was...
At Hanks pool room in Denver they used to put out glasses and a pitcher of ice water for free. Now that is gone and there is a sign "Bottled Water" $1.00.
Any opnions on this?

In my opinion the $1 for a bottle of water is a good price because I order alcoholic drinks (which cost more) and get my glass of ice water for free.

How many of you have been to Hank's?

Did I read this thread right? Did someone actually comment on a homeless man living in a poolroom as a good thing? WTF!! Chuy ain't the best player in the state by a long shot, either...I've got multiple games for that clown. Though I must say he's got the best moves I've ever seen.

Seriously, if Hank wants to turn that place around, he's gotta quit doing that flat rate before 4pm thing. It brings in the wrong crowd...guys like 9ballpaul who won't buy shit and wouldn't bet water's wet, then complain about having to pay for water. Neil, WATER IS NOT FREE. These guys don't do anything for business. The few times I go to Hank's, I'm there to find some action. While I'm there, I'm guaranteed to drop a few beers and several shots. I can't even get on a table before 4pm. Each table has one guy "practicing" on it. Seriously, it's amazing how there is no action in a place supposedly inhabited by the "best in the state." After 4pm, the place is D-E-A-D.

You can charge $1, $5, $10, or whatever you want for a bottle of water. The empty wallet is still empty. Charging for water does not magically fill an empty wallet. Maybe if the whole room chipped in, they could share a bottle of water.

I like the tables...but I won't go there

It was never free. It was a coutesy before.

I guess the owner finally got tired of losing money on giving away the free water, ice, labor to clean the pitcher, dishwasher time etc.. The water was never free for him. So now he gets to make $0.30 profit and get the grief over it. It might be a subtle way to get rid of the cheapskates in a room. Loiterers moochers and cheapskates have strained many businesses.

Bring your own??? What a joke

Not a joke truth, our Pool Room is not open to the Public, I only drink Diet Rite Raspbury it is ZERO EVERYTHING. This is allowed to bring your own. As I said it is a Private Facility, so it is not for profit, and that is that..

It sounds like he is getting desperate to pay the light bill.

The real Issue...

From what I can gather running through this thread is that Measureman has an issue paying for water to drink not an issue supporting the room. Many who grew up in another time feel paying for water is ridiculous. He said he would buy a soda or something but not water. I think the real issue is Measureman refuses to pay for water not refuses to buy from the room.

Just my take on what I have read... Who knows?

I also think the average Pool Player unless they are, or have been a business owner have ZERO IDEA what it cost per day, month, or year to operate any business. Like a Pool Room.

Having ran a business for almost 20 years I understand what my FIXED DAILY EXPENSES were per day, even if I had no income producing work. Those expenses went on, and had to be paid.

I use to love it when the local service clubs use to hit me up for donations, or free bees because I resided in their town. The funning thing was all of my paying clients were not in that town, and I never generated a penny of revenue from where I lived.

It was just were I live, bought my gas, groceries, paid taxes, etc. But never generated a penny of revenue.

Now wasn't this thread more interesting then :
Whats the best tip?
Whats the best shaft?
Who makes the best cue?
Etc--------------------------------------------------------------
Amazing amount of posts for water.
I personally have no problem if he wants to charge for bottled water. I would rather buy a soda-I like it better. I do play when the 6 hours for $6.00 is on. And I usually have lunch and maybe a coffee. I do try to support the room. And sometimes I buy the homeless guy lunch also.

Are there actually people upset for having to pay a buck for water???

Im opening my place soon and if your too cheap to at least buy a water while you are sitting around and using my place of business I don't want anything to do with you.

If I caught you drinking from the bathroom sink I would kick your worthless hide out of the building. That is NOT the kind of clientele I want in my business.

If you can't afford a water stay home and stop leeching off other people.
