Noted Tightwad Spends $25,000 for Mark Gregory Centenniel

I have always liked a super nice black finish, on a tight grained wood or a wood with its pores filled. Smooth like silk.

And as soon as you put your bridge hand on it...you can see your fingerprints from
across the room.
Never liked the black Gold Crowns from the 90s for that...
...they only looked good in the showroom.

If the retail market on a very nice restored Centennial is up to $25,000, what is the going rate for them in the as is condition today?

That's $25,000 for a complete redone table by Mark Gregory.
I don't know who else commands that price .
That table has brand new rosewood rails .

Believe it or not, at one time I found a Centennial ( pro-8 size ) for less than 1K.
It was just stored in a warehouse. The owner had no idea what he had.
I called a friend and he picked it up right away.

I think Centennials go for 3K to 5K or so now depending on the shape and condition.

That anniversary table of mark's is beautiful

it plays the same as the centennial
i like them both, but i settled on the Centennial because
iI like the art deco

i am probably getting mine to be almost the same
as the one billy incardone bought

but I am considering having mark do it in black, shinny black with high gloss
finish and shiny new aluminum

which would you guys do

beautiful wood or black?

i sold the kling, one look at the centennial that chris bought
and i put my kling up for sale

Have you seen one in black? Would the grain of the rosewood show up? I have one that I restored myself to it's natural color and it's beautiful. Just wondering what the black would look like.

What can I say

Just because I couldn't buy the best of everything, didn't keep me
from getting the best of something

Mark can post pictures as the table is being rebuilt

I am going to get 5 inch pockets, but Mark is trying
to get me to get 4.75

How can I be expected to make a ball with tight pockets?
Dean

Hey Dean,
You choose the best! Congratulations on your purchase! I have 4 and 9/16" pockets from Mark and they are tough but my buddies love my table. Make sure you get 5" sides or a little larger.

It sounds like all you guys prefer the natural wood to the black

mark sent me pictures of the wood andconvinced me to go with the
natural wood

with his new high gloss finish i think the black would be beautiful
but the decision is made

when the table gets here i hope to have you guys drop by
and play

in fact i am thinking of inviting some great players over to play and do
some one pocket instructional videos

also i have been thinking of an invitational one pocket series of games
matched or handicapped by the players

in dallas ft worth there are 4 of us with these great old tables by mark

I want to have tom wirth, billy incardone, jack cooney ,keith and some of the old timers
to play, reminisk, instruct and leave a permanent record of the day

it would be great to hear and see ed kelley compare the styles and show some of his
game too

i can not decide how to do it,but to see Denny Glenn discuss stories and share the cues,
get will prout and guys that make this game of ours so great

perhaps i am dreaming, but i had the privilege of knowing these guys and sharing stories and contributing cash to most of them

i think it would be fun to have a competition of sorts in the houses and on the various tables
with the real characters

the tour doesn't seem to be making it,perhaps something more personal might be fun to watch
especially if we sweeten the kitty and see who really gets the money when they play their own

of course this could be a pipe dream

Dean, based on our one time meeting and how much you are respected by your peers, I don't believe anything you put your mind to is a pipe dream. Congrats on the new table.

Not all of us prefer natural to black. I have my own wood shop and as a hobby I make all kinds of things in it. Nobody likes the different woods more than I, I use hundreds of different woods. Having said that I wanted something different with my table so I ordered a Diamond Pro in 2007 and had them paint the Oak table black. That is everything south of the rails. I really like Oak but to me the Oak still had its character when it had been covered in black enamel. The wood grain still emanates through the paint and the skirts and pedestals contrast the rails for a look that I never got tired of.

I say do something a bit different.

Dean was that yours parked in front of Texas de Brazil ? I had you pegged for a Fogo de Cho guy.
Furr's and save for a great table ??

Hope you get to hit a ball soon on the new table.

Why would anyone paint over rosewood rails in the first place?

I knew it

I, put the over/ under at 6 weeks, on how long your pool retirement would
last. Over wins. Feeding the pigeons and playing scrabble ain't what it's
cracked up to be is it. This is good news for all pool players. Deanoc is an
mover and shaker, and an action magnet. Even when we were just kids
growing up in Oak Cliff, he always had something going. If one his deals
didn't work, no problem start another until you have a winner, then drain
that sucker dry. Now about this one pocket legends deal. Obviously one
pocket is not my long suit, and was only a legend at Steve's Club, but I
could help June serve refreshments and slap my knee at laugh at all the
old war stories, or just stand on my tip toes and look through the window
like I did at the action room in Johnston City when I was about 16. Glad
you're back.

I am fairly new here.... who are you?

you guys are a fun bunch

jacpot will be invited to the one pocket festival

i will not be staking his one pocket action, will not

i am not sure about his 9 ball either

from the wayjack got so nervous when i played pete glenn

he might not be allowed to even bet with me

i am willing to admit he was right,it turned out that i had a bad game
but how was i to know until i lost a dozen games

turned out that Pete was one of the greatest pool hustlers in the history of the game

but how was i to know when i had only lost two games

by the way i have some surprises, including a cue Jack can borrow

my table will be here in january ,please start offering me the nuts

i may be ready to play again by then

I'm not sure who he is,========= but I put snow on the mountain, raised
hell on the hill, locked horns with the Devil himself, been a rodeo bum a
son-of-a-gun and a hobo with, uh wait a minute that's not me, maybe it is him.
The more I think about, I'm sure it's him. denwhit, hope this helps.

This will be an appropriate time to post a pic of your new table and your whole collection in one group shot.

That’s a great idea, I’d like love to see the table along with some of your cue collection!
