I realize that I am not even close to the skill level of large or huge stakes myself. To me $100 a rack is a serious bet. I may never be a gambler of the level that some are on here and I am fine with that. I think the idea of pay as you play is the best way to go personally. In fact, reading this reminded me of the old bet of "double or nothing". I feel like that is when the opponent does not want to pay for the first game they already lost. Basically, if I win a game for $50 and they want to go double or nothing my reply to that offer is I am not a bank. If you like we can play the next game for $100 as soon as you pay me the fifty you owe already. I believe when people want to go double or nothing many times they are already broke.

I maxed myself out at $100 games because that's all I was willing to lose. I didn't play for that much too often. I didn't want the high stakes games, couldn't afford them, nor was I willing to join the degenerates at the pool hall all day looking for any kind of action.
When I played with my buddies, we never played for more than $20 a game. A lot of the $100 games came from "friendly" $10-$20 games where the stakes would increase gradually.
I do love reading the stories here on the forum! Always wished to be a part of it, but alas I have too many things going on all the time to just concentrate on one thing...

Why not post-up beforehand? The money's up and somebody's gonna get it. Playing by the game can actually cost you money. If you come out of the gate smokin' and the guy hops after a couple games you've made a tactical error. Granted, this is more of a poolhall move 'cause if you ask a guy in a bar to post he'll know you're probably better than him.

It all depends on who you're playing and the situation you're in. Mostly you have to play with your smarts and instinct. If you played a stranger and played by the game it was pay after every game. That was fine but you could always expect to get stiffed for the last game. I realized that to avoid getting stiffed we should post the last game on the light.
This way you always got payed before breaking the next rack. When they started squirm you would politely ask them for it before breaking the next rack and if they couldn't pay you just took the last game off the light. If you let a good played play the last game on air that might be all they need to make a comeback. I know I've been on the other side of that scenario. lol
In playing a set you determine with your instinct whether you should post or not. You may want to take the chance and not post. Sometimes more is to be won without posting. Of course the amount of the wager goes into this decision.
Many years back I watched a game where a good player was playing an older gentleman that looked to me to be a business man. The older guy was getting the seven ball and they were playing by the game. After a few hours the older guy runs out of cash and asks if he could mark up on the string. That's the beads used over pool tables to keep score with. He said that he had money coming. The guy giving up the spot refused even though he was winning fairly easy. The game ended
I stepped up and offered the same game to him and to let him mark up on the string if he lost. He accepted. It was easy to see after watching him play for hours that he had no chance. Well as it turned out he lost close to a thousand and a couple of other older guys came in and payed off the losses. I couldn't believe him asking me if I would continue playing and that if he lost more that he would make good the following day. Turned out that he owned a furniture store in Oakland Ca. He offered to pay me with furniture using his cost as the basis. Turns out he lost another $1500 and sure enough I went to his store the following day which was a Monday and he made good on his debt. In the sixties you could redo a complete house with that amount. His cost $1500 was about $4500 retail. Made my wife happy.

Sometimes when fishing it's far smarter to let the fish hook himself, then you let him fight on the line for awhile, you only reel him in when you know there is no more fight in him. Just my experience in Marlin fishing... the fight is most of the fun.
Well I'm no big time gambler by any means. If I'm playing with people I know I don't care how it comes by the game, after a series or, after a set. If it's people I don't know, I want it by the game, if it's a race then post it up all day everyday, actually rather someone trusted to hold the money.

Sometimes letting your line go slack on a fish is advantageous. It gives you a harder set hook when you pull the line. 
Honestly, I've had people beat me at 10 bucks a rack a few times with no money on the light. When I mention a race for a couple hundred they either put the money up or dry up quick... either way is good by me.

I like to pay after each game when playing by the game, but I have made exceptions recently.
When playing the top players in the league, we all know each other and nobody is going anywhere.
I've played $10 a game and pay at $100 or when playing is over.
Just recently I played a guy and we did pay after each game. But I could see that he had no more money in his wallet. I did let him take a freeroll, because I would see him many times in the future and I was sure that I could beat him.
It figures, he then won two in a row. I doubled the bet, got the freeroll back. Told him that the ATM machine was right over there, then he quit. LOL

If I am playing somebody and they only have $100 to lose, I'd much rather beat them out of it at $5 a game than taking it from them in two games at $50.
If they beat me twice at $50 a game, I'm playing against my own money now, because I knew they would never lose more than $100 to begin with. What is the sense in doing this?
I'd rather steamroll their ass and beat them ahead 20 games in a couple hours and then there is no doubt who actually came out winner.

The person with the $$$ is the winner - doesn't matter if it's $100 a game or $1 a game. If you beat the guy 20 games he most likely isn't coming back for more, but if you beat him 2 games he's gonna think he still has a chance.
Either way it's $100 I'd rather have a shot at getting more later

I remember the late Tom Ferry's rules for gambling. A couple rules were pay after each game or set and anybody can quit after each game or set.
The reason was once they figured out he was hustling them a lot of people didn't want to pay.
You would have never beaten the players I have out of as much money as I did with your pay as you play....LOL The art of the hustle is to make your opponent think they had a chance to win but blew it. You do that by playing races to 5 or even 7, posting the cash before hand. Then don't destroy the person you're playing, just control the win to 5-4 if you can, OR let them start out with a lead going to 7, then pass them at 7-6 or even 7-5. When you learn to gamble like that, you end up with your opponent coming back again and again. If you're playing 9 ball and they complain the need some weight, give them a game or two on the wire before you give them other balls to win on...especially if you haven't shown your true speed yet.
Sounds like you were playing suckers. I never liked suckers...I liked idiots. Especially, idiots with big mouths and big egos that wouldn't allow them to quit no matter how hard you beat their brains out.
I'd rather play people that know how to play, or think they do, and then try to shoot their livers out, like Earl says.
When you are playing by the game, there are games where you may not concentrate as much when you are ahead and they may win a few, but I never intentionally laid down just to let people win.
I used to play a lot of ring games and you learn not to miss too much when you know you may not shoot again for a long time.
I made a lot of money gambling for many years, but it wasn't by suckering people. I actually had to beat them.
I agree pay off or get paid after every game. That is the best way.
