Players not being paid at US Open

Some things you may not know about who's running (or ruining) this tournament: these are all facts that have been disclosed to me from someone who has known/worked for BB a very long time.

His employees at Q's haven't been able to get a real paycheck they can take to the bank since 2002. They get paid cash from the store, and because of the limited amount of cash flow, some don't receive their pay for days after "payday."

All of his purveyors for Q's (beer, liquor, food) will not take a check from him. They're either paid cash or by certified check.

Often takes out personal loans from friends, offering free tabs and pool time as part of payment.

Most arrangements for the Open are actually trades. Not much cash gets exchanged.

The added money for the tourny has to come from BB (which means Q's) you can refer to the above to see how that can be a problem.

Relying on gate sales (VIP seating, daily passes to help make up difference in added money) and well, there's not enough seats to sell to make up that differential. And most people won't show up to watch til later in the week. When was the last time you saw a day session on the 2nd day of play completely sold out?

It's a poke and hope approach that some miracle will occur and save his ass.. You wonder why he's loaded all the time? And not just at the Open, catch him in March he's there during the day with a Crown and diet in one hand and a drill in the other hanging up more nostalgia. He's trying to forget how much money he doesn't have to pay everyone and how much he has to come out of pocket to pay everything off.

The YouTube video is OBVIOUSLY sarcasm. He may have a business that makes hundreds of thousands a year in gross earnings (warning to anyone who may still want to buy Q's) but what he actually makes is way less than you think.

Year after year, it's the same song and dance, from BB and the players, and the fans. There just has to be someone to draw a line in the sand, say no more and let this just fade away until someone else can take it over who has the business sense and ability to run a Open that can at least break even.

Names Please again

Those of you complaining that players are not getting paid need to provide some names. If there are players not getting paid that is terrible and the bashing is warranted. Otherwise its just smoke.

But give us some NAMES.

Well I got the stream, and during his speeches he said people would be getting paid later, i.e., not immediately after the tournament. I'm not sure it's so bad to wait a week or so for a check, if that's what happens...

....Imagine if Ko had played and won? Things would have to be handled differently I'd think....

slick.... can't say i didn't see it coming.
Barry hired Roberta to get AZB back on board - and paid her salary.
Barry hired Jay to get everyone back on board - and i'm sure Jay's terms were prepay.
Barry's on COD terms w/ all vendors - and no one knew of this till CASEY's post now?

i called & PMd Roberta 2 weeks ago and specifically asked "WHEN is the payout? & HOW are the funds? cause you can't expect an international player to change their flights & incur further expenses waiting." she said she didn't know & that Barry would have to answer those questions. i never got an answer. (2 red flags)

it's a shame that the Kos didn't participate in this Open, as they probably would have won. but they were smart enough to realize the odds on payment.

Imagine if barry joined alcoholics anonymous. Everyone would be paid on time and the pool could be raised to $500k :D

Only BB knows the true state of his finances. And he doesn't really share that with anyone. That's scaaarryyy right there!

All this could be avoided if he doesn't try to add so much money to the Open that he can't provide.

To be the most prestigious tourny, you don't have to have the biggest payouts (although it helps). If you let the level of play speak for itself and let things build from there would this be an ongoing discussion year after year??

I have to wonder, after all these years, just how much his drinking is a part of this. I've been three times and Barry was seldom sober any time I saw him.

It's a significant factor im sure-affecting his judgment. To him alcohol is a substitute at this point id say. "Hey im not on the illegal stuff!" so he probably feels he is doing good and not likely to improve.

Hey Barry, you're 70! If not now, when?

Anyway he needs help (and good help is hard to find)

Your PMs are full

Video of Barry stiff rant. Randall posted it on Facebook, threw it up on Youtube so people could access it. Unreal stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXXFWmQ3WRY

I usually don't speak like this, Barry is a drunken F ing Clown!

Barry is going to f the wrong person one day and then he will pay up!

Grow up Barry, leave all the coke and alcohol alone, it is really taken its toll on you!

Barry Bherman (how ever you spell it) = never to be trusted again!

Sorry Roberta , but this clown needs to be told, not to be taken up for anymore!

You are a good women Roberta, I am sure none of this is your fault, so please don't take the fall for this clown!

While it may be desired to obtain the prestigious name of the US Open, it seems the easy way to overcome this is for a business savvy individual with financial backing to just create a new tournament around the same time frame. Call it the US Championship or North America Open. Call it something.

Does it have to be in Virginia? No. The international players could probably care less where it's held as long as the venue is a class act with good lodging and eateries nearby.

Don't hold it the same week as the US Open but have it within a week or two of the Open. If someone can establish a well-run model, then the Open will fizzle out. Sometimes traditions need to die out and it sounds like this one has reached the end.

Any Players

It would be great if a few players would come on AZ and give us their point of view.

Were players told in advance that monies will be payed within 7 days, 10 days, or maybe 2 weeks.

Someone on here knows a person who played in the U.S. Open. Get their point of view.

You'd be surprised how closed mouthed they can be when there is still hope.

An interesting idea that has been tried.

Once upon a time, in a far away time called 1976 and a faraway place called the straight pool era, several pros got too damn fed up with the status quo and they got together, boycotted the US Open 14.1 and created an organization and world championship of their own. They were called the professional pool players association, or the PPPA for short, and they were formed on the efforts of guys like Ray Martin, Allen Hopkins, Pete Margo and others.

Although the PPPA managed to stage nine world 14.1 championship events, it didn't go particularly well in the end result. The plan proved divisive. I recall that PPPA pros tried to pooh-pooh the efforts of Tom Jennings, who won the first two US Open 14.1 events after the split, saying that the big guns like Mizerak, Martin, Hopkins, and Lisciotti hadn't participated. This, in my opinion, wasn't good for the game and it lowered the profile of the US Open 14.1 event, which soon disappeared.

What I'm saying is that unless all the players are on board for a change like the one your propose, it probably will run into roadblocks that will be hard to overcome.

The only way to fix this

The only way to fix this is for all the sponsors, vendors, streamers and players to boycott the event. No media, no players, no event. He will have to sell the brand. If not after a few years it will be worthless and he isn't stupid. To all those who suggest he lower the purse so he can actually pay the players you still haven't gotten rid if the real problem. Him! How do you expect pool to get on TV or get any real money sponsors when you have the Barrys of the pool world representing the sport. Why do you think he can't pay now.
Of course we have to actually follow through with a real boycott and not belly up to the feed trough with that hog again next year when he decides to dangle a few more carrots in front of our noses.
I personally won't be purchasing the US Open stream or attending the event until Barry no longer owns it.

kind of hard to believe that the entire US Open field just got air-barrelled.

You've never been air-barreled until you've been air-barreled by Barry Behrman......

EDIT: I want a cut of the t-shirt sales..... Don't you dare barrel me on it either.

Your nuts comment is rude and unwarranted, something I wouldn't expect of you, Johnny.

Blaming Jay for participating is like blaming Jimmy Wych or Pat Fleming for their particpation.

Quote me what Jay said.

I find Tate's posts to be informative and well based, but I have to disagree with him here. Knowing the past hx of this event, anyone that wants to keep the trust and the respect of the players should have made certain that things were set up correctly before taking the significant position of tournament director. Ultimately, something like this is Barry's fault, but knowing that many people were going to play because of their faith in him, Jay should have made sure the prize fund was infallible before agreeing to take the position.

That is not a knock on him as a person, or his ability to run a tournament, just an observation on how I would have thought he would approach this opportunity.

Boycotts are easy to talk about John. Hey, all it will take for us to bring gas prices down, is to boycott Esso for a month. You know how that works eh.

Maybe long before next years Open, we should all put our names on an online Doc that states that none of us will purchase the live Streams nor any DVDs at a later date for the 2015 Open.

Send the petition to Accu Stats. Fans can Boycott the Open, not just the Players.

I had thought that the APB was going to take care of all that jazz a year or so ago. See how well that worked eh.
