Rick S....Just wanted to clarify something. Both being deaf, and being bipolar are both PHYSICAL disabilities. Bipolar is a chemical imbalance in the brain. How it affects people, and to what degree, vary from patient to patient. A mental disorder would be something along the lines of schizophrenia, or anger management.Scott Lee

Unfortunately most of my class time was spent with Earl. At the time I was a fan of Earl and not of JA so much. I even got my wife to go with me to the exibition the night before. My wife is the director of a memory care unit and totally not into pool. Her impression of Earl at the trick shot exibition was not good to say the least. After our time with Earl and JA was finished the next day, I tried to compliment Earl on the fact that I thought it was nice to meet him, and he went off on some rant about how I was lucky to meet him being such a great player and all which was a total turn off.
What I got for my $$$ was that Johnny Archer is one of the nicest people I have ever met and was nice enough to stand next to me, and put his arm around my shoulder when we had our group picture taken. I really would like to have a copy of that photo and have asked for one before and never got it. I think whether Earl is good for pool remains to be seen. All that I can say is that I wouldn't bet against him.
Creedo...I remember you posting in the chat during the match. You mentioned you should "call Earl on his cell phone during the match, saying "I'd bet he'd really go off"
Please tell me why you'd think that would be funny? I'd sure like to hear it.
And next question will be how old are you?
I think it'd be funny because I can see the humor in almost anything, including (but not limited to):
- A kid having a horrible accident on a trampoline
- A psycho senior citizen and a mouthy black dude on a public bus getting into a fistfight
- Racial, gay, fat, and your momma jokes
- Dick cancer
- The holocaust
- My own arrogance, hypocrisy, or general stupidity..
Seeing people flip out (especially over nothing) is funny. If it weren't, adam sandler and jerry springer would be broke. We're all human, we laugh at screwed up things. Am I a bad guy for laughing at this? Will you also say that Shane's a bad guy when he was clearly struggling to contain laughter during one of earl's outbursts?
Maybe if I knew him I wouldn't laugh. It's hard for me to say, because I don't know how severely bipolar earl is. Apparently off the table he's a great guy. .
Is it really an uncontrollable "mood swing" when he starts being a dick the moment the match starts, and stops the instant he's won? I think that's being overly competitive and having an unhealthy belief that your worth as a human being is tied to your performance at the pool table..
PS: my age isn't relevant, but there are a few gray hairs.
Sorry partner but you should read what you have just written because it truly makes no sense, and I hope what you said was just a mistake in your translation because there was nothing funny or entertaining about it.
Oh and by the way, if you were serious stick to pool because your knowledge of Psychiatry is weak.

just wanted to clarify something, being bipolar is a MENTAL not a physical defect. it is the cycling between hypomaina (or full blown maina) and depression. it affects my brain. not my ability to hear, see, smell, taste, walk, run, jump or shoot pool. i have shot and shot well in more than a few tournaments while in the midst of a severe depression stage. the hard part was mentally willing myself out of the bed, then out of the house, into the truck, and so on. playing wasn't the hard part. the going home and being so depressed you're not sure what you're going to do was the hard hard part. nice try, but a swing and a miss. stick to the pool knowlege, you hit it out of the park on that stuff.
After hearing all the disability talk, and talking w/friends I really began to wonder which disability would be worse to have? (wouldn't wish either on my worst enemy)
Which one would affect someone's performance more? A mental disability, or a physical disability?
Mental disabilities can't be seen from the outside.
People just don't seem to understand if they can't see something obvious (missing arms-legs, wearing hearing aids) that someone had a handicap.
Why is it Earl is called crazy, stupid, dumb, and most other names in the book? While he has a disability that affects his thoughts, and actions? Is it OK to make fun of people with this disability??
SYMPTOMS.........
"The primary symptoms of the disorder are dramatic and unpredictable mood swings. Overpowering negative emotions, such as extreme anger, anxiety, and frustration. It is usually repetitive, not a one-time act."
Now, does that sound like Earl to you?? Your damn right it does.
Do you people actually think Earl wants to behave like he does? Hell no, he don't. He's seen numerous specialists and tried numerous medications, and spent thousands, and thousands of dollars all to no avail.
None of the meds allow him to show us the stroke that made him the greatest living 9 ball player on the planet. The meds rob him of that. (and US too)
Imagine if the tables were turned, and Earl was the one w/the hearing impairment? How many more titiles-world championships do you think he would have by now? There is absolutely no telling....
He wouldn't be having to scrap to get by these days, I have a feeling.
Earl has given us some of the most electrifying moments in pool history, and countless hours of entertainment over the years.
YOU be the judge.
Give Earl a break.....he deserves it.
slim: You don't need to put on caps lock and bold for people to read your posts. If what you're saying makes sense, it's good enough in plain lowercase.
Sorry though, shane was struggling to contain himself when earl would start giving people dirty looks and yelling at the crowd, and if memory serves he was also smiling when earl had his biggest blowup and slammed the headphones. It wasn't about the equipment.
This whole disagreement with rick seems to be from some offhand comment i barely remember making. Someone else has said something like "haha, earl should put belly button lint on the table, johnny archer would really flip out". I can imagine someone else saying "you should put a 4 seconds shot clock on kid delicious, i bet that'd drive him nuts". Nobody really needs to read so much into these comments. Let's all fill out a hurt feelings form and drop it in the suggestion box.

Has Earl been actually diagnosed with bipolar or some other clinical disability? How do you know about the specialists, medications, etc.?
yes.
