playing with a house cue

last night at league after our matches were over i packed up my cues and went over to hang out and watch my gf's team playing their matches. i soon got bored and walked around socializing.

i wound up back over where our team had played and one of my teamates asked if i wanted to play some. i said sure and since i had left my case over where my gf was playing and did not want to walk back to get them i just grabbed a cue off the wall.

now my teamate and i are both 5s and we always match up good. we have played 5 or 6 racks at a time several times with neither one ever getting more than a game ahead.

well he won the 1st game and i won the next 6 in a row with that house cue before my gf came over and said she was ready to go. i just did not want to quit, i was playing better than i have in the last 20 years. it reminded me of my younger years when i would walk into a bar and grab a stick off the wall and keep the table till closing time.

now my you i have never been a world beater or even a good shortstop but i could hang with most of the better local in my area.

now if i could just figure out how to carry that stick i used last night around with me.....

Simple...take it to a cuemaker & have him cut it & install a G10 pin. Balance, feel, hit...all should be pretty much the same....and you can put it in your case & take it home. The work won't cost very much either...plus the poolroom will probably sell it to you for $10 or less.

I've done something very similar to this (I don't have a gf ). I always pack up my stuff as soon as my match is over. I'll end up getting asked to play so I end up playing with a house cue, without my glasses, without my glove, without my Blue Diamond chalk, and WITH several more drinks (Crown & Coke) in my belly than I would normally have during a real match. Sometimes I ask myself "why don't you just scrap all the gadgets and just have more to drink before you shoot?". It amazes me at how many times I've found myself shooting very good doing what I've described above.

I played with a house cue off the wall the entire time I gambled nightly. I also kept a house cue behind the counter at a friend's place for awhile. A well maintained house cue with a good tip or good tip and ferrule plays better than about 90% of hinged cues, production or custom. Biggest advantage of having your own cue is consistency. A good jointed cue rarely does better than match the hit of a one piece cue.

Sometimes I play better too with a house stick. Doesn't that just wad up you shorts? :o

I spend all this money on nice cues and my high run in straight pool was with a house stick.

I would advise against converting a house cue into a jointed stick, because what you are describing the clean pure hit and feel of a one piece and there is only one way to replicate that feel is to keep the cue in one piece. My mentor and old time road player played with a house cue until the day he died. Of course as a hustle there is nothing better than walking into an action site wearing overalls and carrying a house cue with ears that looked like a cab with its doors open demanding to play the best. They would fight each other trying to get his action. cool stroll down memory lane.

This is funny. My wifes uncle only plays with a one piece cue. He actually made an attachment to his case so he could carry it around to go to league. I thought it was odd, but I guess it's not just him.

Some of those "one-piece" cues have a pin already. ;)

There is a retired Dr. locally that has a case for a one piece cue. Didn't know they existed until I saw his.

They come up on Ebay occasionally. Usually with old snooker cues but sometimes pool.

Can't imagine carrying something that long around......

house cue

Thats why theres no hit like a hoppe titlist. Every one that ever hits with one of my conversions are amazed how they play. Then i tell em it is a 50 year old cue made from a one piece house cue it confusses them more.

Untrue, the hit comes from the fullsplice, and it will carry over if converted properly. Why do you think there's so many sneaky pete fans, and converted house cues going for big $? A well made sneaky will play a 1000times better than any 1 piece house cue. Anyone who thinks a house cue plays better than a Scruggs sneaky, for instance, has got to be a few eggs short of an omlet.

i think playing with a house cue takes your mind to when pool was just simply fun. playing in a bar on a saturday night with your buddies drinking beer, no pressure, certainly no safety play. it lets you just play pool and you just go for it. no league, no tournament, just pool. for most people, that is when they play their best. the pressure makes it something else. bar cue=fun=your best game.

i really got under your skin starting that thread didnt i ? my apologies:thumbup:btw i thought you was through with the troll thing so i did not respond to your last post in that thread.

stock in a house cue company ? another poster said i could probably pick up that house cue for 10.00 and have it converted. now your post got me to thinking i could probably pick up about 500 of them for what i paid for my current playing cue :(

i think you hit the nail on the head here.

you are not worried about nicking your cue or getting it stolen. no pressure of trying to not let teamates down, no worries about qualifying for regionals or vegas.
just playing in a bar for a beer which you would have no problem buying for somebodt=y anyway or playing for a few bucks and if you lost it was no big deal anyway as you probably won it off someone earlier or will surely win the next one.

ah the good old days:thumbup:

I was going into The Rack in Detroit about a million years ago and spotted Sigel and his road partner Larry Hubbard opening the trunk of their car and getting their cues. Hook took out a tube case, like everybody had at the time, Hubbard pulled out a one-piece house cue, and he played completely lights out with that cue.

Some years later I bought my first Tad, from Tad (he sold to the public back then). He screwed my $225 cue together and held it in one hand by the butt while hitting the joint with the palm of his other, listening and feeling the instrument he had created for me. What he had to say was "good as one-piece".

Thanks

Kevin

maybe i use bigger eggs. feel is very difficult to quantify and just because people buy something doesnt equate to anything. agree to disagree

If you ever go to Tallahassee, FL check out Zingales.

Besides being a good room, it has several old leather cases on the wall for one piece cues.

I offered to buy them but they had no interest in selling
