From what I have heard over the years I think it means:

1. Someone who talks a lot of smack, a know-it-all but won't bet a penny.
2. Someone who will quit while ahead in cash.
3. Someone who will suddenly realize they have to leave while ahead.
4. Someone who refuses to adjust.
5. Someone who won't give weight when they have the obvious advantage.
6. Someone who won't "go for anything", say more than $20, but loves to talk about "action".
7. All of the above.

Am I way off?

MAN, there is so many people in the town I live in that fit every single one of them descriptions it is not funny................

Pool Nit according to Tom In Cincy circa 2003

"Nit" is not just a pool player term, it applies to all sorts of characters

They show up week after week at the local pool tournament and ***** about how only the same players always win.

They never come to the pool hall and practice

At the tournament they just drink water or a half a cup of coffee

Always complain about the way the money is distributed in the Payouts

Expect everyone to agree with their opinions

Know all the rules of the game except when they commit a violation. Then its an interpretation "thing"

***** about having to pay "green fees" or "table time" at a tournament

Lose a bet and will have to pay you next week, "a little short right now"

Start rumors, lie, cheat, complain at the drop of a hat, cuss

***I'm sure there are a lot of other examples of a Pool Nit, what's yours?***

What has been a revelation to Pool Hall owners lately is to tell these people "WE don't need your kind", "You don't spend any money with us and all you do is make people want to leave".

Billiards has been associated with gamblers and hustlers for a very long time. Gamblers use to meet, on a regular basis, to wager on horses or other games of chance. These meeting parlors and their patrons, had the bad reputation. In these parlors or halls, there were poker tables and billiard tables for the patrons to amuse themselves while waiting for the "big score" where all the gamblers could "pool" their money for the BET.

According to the BCA's rule book (a brief "history of the game"), this is how Billiard games were associated with the "Pool Halls". Games of chance will always attract gamblers and hustlers.

When you go to a snake pit, do you really think you won't get bit?

> There are circles within the pool community where a player, regardless of how strong they might be,could be referred to,or flat-out called a nit for simply choosing to NOT GAMBLE.

Even though Mike Massey did his share of road work back in the day,his religious convictions now forbid it.

You'd be surprised at the number of fairly strong players that are like that.

I don't know why,but Ralf Souquet is said to not gamble on himself. Would I if I played his speed, sure I would, but unless he's playing one of the other top 25 players, that's not gambling, that's STEALING.

There is a damn strong player from up around Bowling Green,Ky named Eddie Adams. His top gear is about like Rudolfo Luat's every day speed, more than enough to give him a legit shot to beat anyone that breathes air in a given tournament match.

He won't play for money, buy himself in the calcutta, sidebet,or even take jelly if you bought him and he wins. It's either based on religion,or some other deep conviction, and I respect him for it. Mike Massey is the exact same.

The difference between guys like that and a true nit is they aren't WOOFING at everyone in the room, and then choosing not to play. They aren't talking shit like "bet you won't play me even" after losing to you,and then wanting to play a race to 7 for 10 bucks.

Or,maybe they don't have the same amount of disposable income as others. I fall into that category myself at the moment. If I had say 2000 a month I could just set on fire and not worry about it,like some here,if not more, other than the obvious champions that post here,NO ONE that comes here is barred. I believe in myself that much.

With that being said,I can't afford to play more than the occasional 50 dollar set now and then,so I don't,and have had to turn down games I could grind out into a 1000 dollar score several times, because I simply didn't have the cash to start.

I'm not out woofing at people either. Tommy D.

Sounds like a nit is a combination of a cheapskate/coward/all talk-no action kind of person.

Ugly combination.

I'm a nit, but I'll still flip for a little something. ;)

i think the above answeres cover it, however you gotta walk a thin line otherwise your a mark or a sucker,

having said that this is is the only year i'm in the red in pool ever, since 85 I have came out winner every year, but the year aint over. When you do pick your spots carefully you can became known as a nit, but thats better than getting chopped up-which that has happened to me, its all part of pool business happens, move on and live to fight another day. it is a snake pit and you will get bit-no matter what.

To me a nit is someone who never bets anything even if they have the best of it, like when JS had 92 playing K-Wood, K-Wood was done, I still wanted to bet on him-my nose was open, not taking that bet is a nit move, I was giving away $$$.

When I was broke in the 80's I had to pick my spots real careful and was considered a nit by some, they just didnt understand I didnt have $$$. I hated that, Knew I wasnt gonna be a great player no matter how hard, or long I played, so I went out and made some $$$$, now I'm a stone sucker. So line up and get your free $$$.

a nit is someone that picks their spots, it comes from the word Nitpicking.

You probably have a mental impression of someone that nitpicks everything, well that's it. a pool nitpicker.

actual source of Nitpicking= Nitpicking was the act of removing nits (the eggs of lice, generally head lice) from the host's hair. As the nits are cemented to individual hairs with louse saliva, they cannot be removed with lice combs and, before modern chemical methods were invented, the only options were to shave all the host's hair or to pick them free one by one.

The answer is a resounding #7  However, possessing any ONE of the other 6 traits, to an overbearing capacity, would qualify. Most of the poolrooms I've frequented, the nit's out number the good guy's by about 3 to 1. Nit's and knocker's should be hung by their thumbs, (or any other similar size body part) until they agree not to piss everybody off ! :)

Definition of Nit

A nit is a person who thinks they belong in the pool room and should get all the attention, but everyone else thinks should get lost.

again

somebody do a search on this same subject which must have had a hundred replies to it before, and post it for this guy....

Depends on who is pointing out the "nit".....

Let me put it this way....

Many hustlers, road players, and those who are the stronger players often refer to someone as a "nit" when a person refuses to gamble or play. Many times the person calling someone a "nit" is actually the "nit". The person labeling someone as a "nit" is actually looking for a steal and when that person won't open up there wallet and donate to them then all of a sudden they are a "nit".

So...if I refuse to play someone and I know I am the inferior player then call me a nit if you like. I call it being smart and not giving my money away. And usually that particular thief who is calling me a nit needs my money to feed his fat ass cause the little bit of money he has in his pocket is all he has. That money is also very safe in his pocket cause he will never ask someone to play unless he is sure he will win or is a better player.

The BIG FISH eat the LITTLE FISH every time, but only if you give 'em a chance!!!

Nit = Someone who wouldn't bet on whether the sun will set in the west or the east.

Agreed. And to put it in shorthand- wpa.

In my opinion a Nit, is some one who has limited intelligence, but doesn't know how they appear to others. These people love to hear themselves talk, or they grow at least a foot when they type on a computer. In many cases this behavior go's directly hand in hand with low self esteem, and a total lack of confidence. When faced with a challenge they can't refuse they fold like a house of cards, and then piss and moan about being sharked or that the table is no good. In general they never have anything good to say about anyone or anything, and they don't understand why no one likes them and they always lose.

In the end these people are the laughing stock wherever they go, but again they don't realize that everyone is laughing at them. ;)

Kinda sad Huh!!!!!!!!!

"nit" in online glossary

This is what I have in my online glossary:
nit: person who wants too much of a handicap or complains about the fairness of a wager.

Dave

Does Eddie Adams still play pool? I met him when I was a young kid.
