Pool cue or a fly rod?

Dagnabbit...why is it that every time I am trying to choose between buying another cue...or a shaft, or...buying a new fly rod and reel, I go for the fly rod and reel?

I've brought two new reels and a new rod for bass fishing this year, not to mention plenty of tackle over the winter.

Did buy a new cue in the fall though. Wish I lived where fly fishing was better, fly fishing for bass, carp, and bluegill just isn't as much fun as fly fishing for trout in my opinion. Have 2 fly rods, sometimes get to go trout fishing, and find it to just be a blast.

cubswin...where do you live? There are very few things that I enjoy doing, more than fly fishing!

Passion is passion. Some love cues and others trout etc... a few are blessed to be passionate about both. Nothing wrong with feeding one need at the expense of another...not too many of us can have it all.

in my case, I spend on firearms or save for the next "fun" car. I'm not a high roller but if I had the cash, I'd sure know what to do with it.

So many interests, so little time.

Just don't start wondering why folks on a pool forum are less supportive of the fly fishing rig over the cue. Maybe G Loomis has a forum where they would flame you for buying a cue???

Good luck brother

well, you know what they say, rhetorically(maybe), if you can only have 25 flyrods what would they be!!!!!!!!! if you don't have 25 flyrods already(i'm not even going to hazard a guess as to how many i have) you are playing catch up for many others who have the flyrods you need.
think about it before you go to sleep tonight- do i REALLY have ALL of the right rods for my fishing? what about the keys trip and the au sable. salmon, maybe? tarpon? permit? bluegill? spey? switch? boo? fiberglass? graphite?
hope that helps! still trying to figure out why i bought a 9-10 wt rod when all i ever fish for is gills and bass. just realized i'm in the market for some flyrods! LOL!

I'm going with fly rod. It will be my first one. I have no idea what to start with. I have a pond out back where I can learn to use it.

Neither. Get a new driver, 3 wood and a putter that looks like a Klingon Battle Cruiser.

Fishing is simply not aggravating enough.

Next time you are about to make this mistake, please go to the pool hall with a fly rod and try a few shots.

If I were determined I could fish with a pool cue and fishing line. I don't see how one could shoot pool with a fishing pole though.

Seems like an easy choice to me.

This is easy buy Pool cue then tie fishing string to it, two birds one stone !!!!

I don't know how many fly rods I own, I lost count. They range from 3wt - 18 wt.
Probably another 50 spinning and conventional rods from 8, 9, 10, 11 ft surf rods to light inshore conventional rods to heavy offshore tackle.
Yes I use them all; there is a time and place for each of them, as you know.

I am looking to buy a new, 2015 Sage Salt 1191-11wt, just because I need another rod, and of course a matching reel to complete the outfit.
Tomorrow I may buy a new cue.

You need a new fly rod and a new cue, maybe 2 shafts
You only live once...

Catch a big one and hit them straight

Thought about it. Finally got my old ones out of storage (long story) and I am hitting the ball better than ever. I am thinking I will keep them. I haven't been able to play in years and I think I am set for the best scoring season of my life.

If you don't think fishing is aggravating enough then I suggest that you have never met a Florida dock snook. Spawn of the devil. I have had an entire school of them staring up at me one foot off the back end of my boat one day before the start of the season. Next day...gone, back into the shadows, ready to snap off line, rip up reels, and snatch poles into the depths. Evil bastards.

Next time you are about to make this mistake, please go to the pool hall with a fly rod and try a few shots.

Next time you stop by a Creek, take out you pool cue and see how well that works as a Tenkara Rod.

Don't get me started. I am starting out this season with a Steve Abel Reel with a spare spool and a G Loomis Rod. I have 2 G Loomis rods and 3 back ups in case I snap a tip.

One Ross 8 wt for the big boys. And this isn't including what my Wife uses.

That's a toughy Buddy. A guy can get by with one pool cue. And you obviously know how Addicting Fly Fishing can be.

I would have to add, at least a couple of K in Fly Tying materials. I just scored 8 packs of Metz Hackle Feathers for $60. In Canada, each pack would run you approx $60. I did well.

And that's not including 3 Spinning reels and 3 Bait Casters.

My Rod Locker in the boat is full.

I dislike taking the boat out. My Wife loves it because I am the Guide for the day. She fishes, I'm the Guide.
I would much rather stand in the water and cast all day long than monkey with a boat.

Come up to Canada for a Fly Trip anytime where I go. Approx 50 Lakes and Streams all close together, (In the Boreal Forest), and stocked with every species of Trout. Plus Pike and Wallies.

Just you and the Bears. I go late Fall when the Blue Berries and Cranberries are out, so the Bears are fattening up. Otherwise, you may not see many.

A can of bear spray or your side by side coach is almost a must have.

That is not inconceivable. Basically all a Tenkara Rod is. Well, a bit more complicated than that, but one could do it.

Tenkara is the Japanese way of Fly Fishing. It is a one piece telescopic Rod.

Different lengths. It has what is called a Lillian on the end. You tie your length of Fly line, Leader and Tippet to that, and yer set.

Used mainly for Stream fishing. Tenkara is getting very popular in North America in the last few years.

I have been getting very tempted but will leave it for a couple of seasons.

Wish I lived where fly fishing was better, fly fishing for bass, carp, and bluegill just isn't as much fun as fly fishing for trout in my opinion.

Cubs, you just named 3 species that are a hoot to Fly Fish for. No Blue Gill around my parts. Bass will handily take lots of Bass Flies. Dragons, Mice, Crawdads, frogs and such. In England, Carp is the main one. And getting very popular in North America lately.

Carp are one of the smartest fish, very wily. And once you snag one, expect to get reeled out a few times.

Man O man...I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the responses to my original post. I would have a lot of fun fishing with you guys.

Presently, I have 6 fly rods, ranging from a 2wt, to a 12 wt. From $100.00 - $900.00. Along with a reel for each one and some spare spools.

I have more baitcasting reels and several nice rods than I can keep track of.

I found an unbelievable spot on the lake, while just doing some exploring right out in the middle of the lake.

I absolutely slay the hybrids and black bass on this spot. I told a friend about it and he wanted to go so much that saliva was almost dripping from his mouth.

An hour and a half after we got there, he had a bass that was almost nine pounds. Right after catching it, he said to me; "I like this spot!"

I enjoy the geometry and physics of pool but to be honest, pool isn't my game. I finally learned to accept that fact. It frustrates me more than it causes me enjoyment.

I am an old golf pro. However...my back is way too bad for me to play golf. So, because I enjoy competing, I started playing pool.

The ONLY reason why I play pool, is because I can no longer play golf.

The nature of a golf pro, dictates that he either has to change his entire appreciation of what to enjoy in pool, or he is going to get extremely frustrated.

I haven't figured out how to do that yet.

So...I find myself wanting to just give up pool and fish more often.

Fishing versus pool

When I learned to play one pocket years ago, the old fellow that taught me explained I need to do 3 things in life to be completely useless. Pool, fish and golf. I still don't golf, so I guess 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

Honestly, I love to fish more than pool. I truly believe if I was given the ultimatum of being the worlds best pool player or the worlds worst fisherman, I would sell my cues tomorrow.

I bought a new bass boat 2 years ago and then a few new rods and reels all for bass fishing. I have been having a blast each time I go out. The crap weather we have had the last few weeks is killing me.

Wow. That I don't understand.

I have often been asked why I don't golf and have been told that I should because I am a doctor. I find this strange. Sometimes I just don't understand how people think.

I have been on two corporate golf events that we sponsored. On both occasions I just drove around in a golf cart with the hooke...I mean models serving beer. I had a lot of fun. But I didn't golf.

Chopdoc...for me, one of the reasons why I enjoy golf more, is because there is so little luck involved. To me, there is way too much luck in pool.
