this is officially the best thread ever for me. op is a great curator. wow.
Some of the photos in the latter part of the thread are repeats. I guess it's time consuming to look at this entire thread, though it is pretty cool. I've added quite a few photos here: personal, borrowed, and Google'd.
I wish there was a way to create a coffee table book of these pool halls from around the world. I would buy it in a heartbeat.
Here's Jakes Billiards and Burgers in Pasadena, CA. Not sure if it's still there anymore, but I love the concept. It reminds me of Weenie Beanie's hot dog stands in Virginia from days gone by.![]()
It's still there and in a very trendy part of old Pasadena. Thee room is downstairs.
Wow! That is cool. Now I'm getting hungry for one of those Pasadena burgers from Jake's. :grin-square:
It appears the 'dog is missing from the pic above. WTF?!

At the Stanley Hotel, the ghosts of the the previous owners, Stanley and his wife Flora, are still reputed to haunt this spectacular hotel, located in Colorado. At times you can hear the piano playing by itself in the music room, which was Mrs. Stanley's favorite room, or you may feel the presence of Mr. Stanley in the lobby or in his favorite spot, the Billiards Room.
The Pinon Billiard Room is home to many ghosts, who appear in the mirrors of the room. Above the main staircase on the second floor, visitors and employees at the hotel have repeatedly reported ghostly presences that follow them down the corridor. The fourth floor is where the servant's quarters were, and it is not uncommon to hear the sounds of children playing in the hallway near room 418, even when there are no children staying at the hotel.
The Stanley Hotel was the inspiration for the writing of Stephen King's "The Shining." He noticed a sign in the vicinity of the hotel that said "road closed in winter, and strolled the hallways, he envisioned what it would be like to be trapped inside this massive hotel with no means of escape.
Anybody want to play a little game of ghost at the Stanley Hotel?
I read the article at your link. The man from Kentucky, Bill Cataneo, is from San Luis. He made and sold great beef jerky. There used to be a small cafe called Chocolate Soup near where the pool hall used to be.
It is San Luis Obispo, not Louis - we're very picky about that. And it's pronounced as either "Lewis" or "Louise" - never as "Louie". And, yes, my alma mater, Cal Poly is here.
In 1959 and 1960, I played pool in this place (when I could sneak in). It was called the Stag Pool Hall then. Some of the tables in that picture were still in use.
