Hi pool fans:

I'm wondering what books you can recommend for road stories and the such.....like in the vein of "Playing off the Rail".....I saw on a used book website Buddy Hall's "From Rags to Rifleman" , but was selling for $275-$316 and was wondering if those prices were wrong.....

Road Player by Danny Diliberto, co-author Jerry Forsyth (EDIT..duh!).

One road story after another.

The price was probably right. Buddy doesn't own the rights to the book, someone else dose and will not print more copies. At least this is what I was told. Johnnyt

I've got two

You might want to check out my two books, Banking With The Beard and The GosPool According To The Beard. Both contain many road hustling stories. There are also many road stories for free on my website, www.bankingwiththebeard.com. You can also order either or both books off my site.

I have yet to read the 'Hustler and the Champ', but did enjoy the other books mentioned. I did like 'Running the Table' a lot. I also liked both of Freddy's books and 'Road Player'. My favorite is probably McGoorty too. It was well written and was funny.

In addition to the Mcgoorty book I recommend Byrne's Short Stories about Pool or something to that extent in terms of title.

The bio of Cornbread Red aka Billy Burge is also a great read. A legend that passed away recently. Red lived less than 20 miles from me and I regret not tapping into his bank of knowledge before it was too late.

I believe I have read them all over the years and a lot of them were very good. If I had to pick one for being the best it would be McGoorty also. Johnnyt

So very wrong, from what I have heard about it: it is very loosely 'literature'.

Not only that, the copy I have, the print seems to vary from signature {group of pages} to signature, as though the printing was changed. I worked in the book binding industry for 27 years and this is strange indeed.
NOT worth the outrageous prices quoted in recent years. Also, anyone looking for a copy needs to be aware that there was a second printing. Normally, in any short print, "in demand" item, the first printing is more desirable, and carries a premium.

mcgoorty's was a good book
running the table too
and hustler days
freddies books where good to. id say read them all.

Rags to Rifleman has sold on eBay in the last five years for the following prices: a little dogeared, $79 Mar03; $66 Mar03; $51 Aug03; $54 Oct03;
$86 Nov03; $43 Apr04; $54 May04; $325!!! Aug05; $62 Aug05; $76 Dec06; $100 Mar07; no bid at $149 Dec07; worn cover, $68 Jan08;
If you can wait, keep checking eBay. If you have to have one now, I have one I'd let go for less than $275, but I'd prefer to trade for it.

From a previous post... My favorites include McGoorty, Lindrum, Gospool, Grissim, Stowers, Stein and Rubino, and Shamos for various reasons.
