Well okay Mark, whatever you say. :D
Merry and Happy to u 2!

Jay, I have a tip for you. Fred's Storm Door and Airline Co, also does publishing on the side. Give him a call, he will cut through all the delay tactics you are coming up with.
Seriously, I do want to wager on the over/under on this thing ?

Dick <---- some of us don't have that long to wait.!

Jay I am looking forward to your new book.

Put me down for 3 signed copies from the first run.

See you at the Derby.

I wish I could have them ready for Derby days, but that just isn't realistic. I have been advised to not try to rush things at this point in time. Better to get it right the first time. That is why I have THREE people proofing it and two others helping me format it properly. I am a retard when it comes to things like that. :p

That's a simple cover, but still nice.

That's correct Jay, don't rush it, do it right instead.

Merry X'mas!!!

WOW!

The book cover looks GREAT! That RubyRon has some nice talent. I like it very much. It goes with what's on the inside of the book and you. When reading Pool Wars, the readers will recognize your valor, honor, wisdom, spirit and humor.

Thanks for letting me be a small part of it.
You done real good.

Merry Christmas,
JoeyA

My wish

My Christmas wish is that Jay makes a lot of money with his book and becomes a big-time promoter of Professional Pool Tournaments on the West Coast......I will certainly buy one..........Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Mr. Helfert...

Okay gang, here's the scoop. I found out that writing a book is only half the battle. Getting the text properly formatted, the photos scanned and organized (with captions), and the cover art made and formatted is another process entirely. Fortunately I have some great people helping me. Little by little I am getting the pieces ready for the publisher/printer.

The best advice I've gotten is to not try to rush things at this stage or the book may not come out looking its best. And being the holiday season, many people are not working regular hours. It isn't realistic to think I will have copies available at DCC. I expect to go to the printers in early to mid January and have printed copies by February. It takes 4-5 weeks from the time the printer gets all the material to finish the first run.

Thanks for being patient. I want to see a real book in my hands just as much as you do. But I don't want to mess it up either by rushing. I am happy that the few people that have read the text seem genuinely pleased with it. My next door neighbor is kind of a computer geek and he has been helping me with the formatting. He is 28 and knows ZERO about pool. He told me he couldn't stop reading it, staying up until three in the morning to finish it. He liked the way it went from one story to another, with no 'fluff' in between.

There are no lessons in this book, no instruction of any kind and it definitely will not help you be a better pool player.

Maybe not better, But Im sure there may be bits and pieces that could make some one a smarter pool player sometimes you can learn something from someones elses life experiences good or bad.

I've finally finished the "proofing and laying out" process and decided on which printing company I will use. I'm going with Bookmasters, the same company who printed Phil Capelle's books (Play Your Best Pool, etc.).

It looks like we will be going to print by the first of March and have the first run complete by mid March. They will be shipping about 500 copies to me for distribution. There have been some dramatic changes made to the book, with a new cover design plus one additional chapter at the end. Many new photographs have been added as well (over 60 total).

Thanks for all your support, especially JoeyA, Rubyron, bighamtimothy and a few others who have helped me so much in this process of readying Pool Wars for print. I hope you all enjoy it and give me lots of feedback on what you like and don't like. I'm already in the planning stages for book number two, that should be a good follow up to this first effort. What I'm hoping to accomplish is to take much of the colorful "oral history" of pool and put it in writing for future generations to read. I will be working with several "old time" players on this task.

Jay - Will there be an AZB price for the book?

Inquiring minds want to know.

The initial price is set at 19.95 (printed on the barcode) plus 4.95 shipping and handling. The total is 24.90 for a personally autographed copy, which I will send out myself. In other words I will be doing my own fulfillment on orders. The first run of 2,000 is the most expensive to produce with various set-up fees, proofs, printer corrections, storage charges, administration fees, etc. And then of course there is the actual cost of printing all these copies. I'm reluctant to lower my price on this first run. I will save money when (and if) it goes to reprint. If the book does not do well, there may not be a reprint, and the first 2,000 may be all that are ever printed.

Does this seem like a fair price on this first run? I did work on this project for the better part of a year, plus the last two months of learning the ins and outs of self publishing. I want very much for this to be a high quality book that people will be proud to have in their library. Whether the time and effort is worth it remains to be seen. I would like to lower the price a few dollars for AZ people, but I also want to be fair to myself. It will take the first 500 sales to get my printing costs and other fees back, before I can turn any profit. I'd like to think that all this time spent producing Pool Wars is not for nothing.

If enough people feel that a price like 17.95 plus only 2.95 for shipping is more doable for them I will rethink this process. I guess my question is, would saving $4 make that big a difference to people. Right now, it would to me. I welcome any and all feedback. In case you don't know, it was because of this forum that I was motivated to write this first book.

Jay,
Let me know how to order. Paypal is easiest, check or credit card also works. Cash at V.F. probably works best for you, I assume?

Whatever it takes, no problem.

PS: website? is www.poolwars.com available?

Jay, the $25 delivered for an autographed copy is very fair IMHO and you can count on my purchase sir.....

Jay - Thanks for the detailed response... $4 or $5 per copy isn't a deal breaker for me... fwiw.

A couple more short questions if you don't mind... is the book a hard-back or a soft-back?... and how many pages does it have?

TIA, cd.

$25 is a steal. Where can I send the money and get an autographed copy? Are you going to be at the SBE with any copies? If so, I will see you there. I can't wait to get my copy.

176 total pages and it is a spined paperback with four color cover; 6"x9", a fairly standard size. I went for the high quality paper and cover material, plus the deluxe binding. Hopefully it will look nice and be well made.

Jay, I think you're starting with avery reasonable price, especially for a signed copy. Good luck with your sales.

Someone already asked this, but I'll ask again. Will you be at the SBE?
