what do you guys think are some of pool's (modern and past) greatest rivalries?? For me, the obvious past (verrrrry far past) would have to be fatty and mosconi. More recent, I'm kinda thinkin Shane and Alex who I'd pay to see match up again. However, my favourite has to be Varner and Reyes, both guys can grind it out for a tourney or gamble, plus they're both as well-rounded as you get. what do you guys think?

Karen Corr - Allison Fisher - especially when they would lag - Allison lagging with the 5 ball - Karen with the 6 ball -

Earl and Efren would get my vote. The hong kong challenge tapes are insane, the finals at the SRO w/ efren's famous kick, etc. etc. It seems like every time they matched up, pool history unfolded. It was just a perfect clash of styles. Earl's firepower and break, and Efren's creativity and control.

And although Mika has been steamrolling everyone around lately, Corey has the ultimate ownage on him no matter how many times Mika might beat him. Corey is the only person to ever win the US Open with a shutout, at the expense of Immonen.

Justin.

Earl and Ralf.

I've heard (through the grapevine) that Earl's called Ralf a f-ggot more than once in tournament. A shame if it's true....

Back in the mid-to-late 1990's, right here in the Northeast, George "Ginky" SanSouci and Tony Robles had a fantastic rivalry, meeting in countless tournament finals in the top Northeast nine ball events.

Still, the greatest pool rivalry in this decade in pro pool is surely that between Allison Fisher and Karen Corr.

another pair

Varner and Sigel

These guys played in many finals around 89-90 and neither of them missed too often.

Good choice. They had great rivalries in both nine ball and straight pool.

Going way back ...

The Ralph Greenleaf/ Frank Taberski rivalry was very intense. At one point, Ralph tried everything he could to shark the unflappable Taberski. It finally came down to Ralph toppling a glass of water on him. Frank got up and socked Ralph in the jaw. This got Frank banned from tournament play for quite a while.

With Frank out of the tournament scene, he decided to offer up a challenge match - he'd go to 1100 points (straight pool) and his opponent goes to 1000 - betting anybody, Greenleaf included. From what I understand, no one took him up on it.

Btw, in those days psychological warfare (sharking) was considered fair game and Taberski was not above it himself. He was legendary for slowing the game down to a point of almost single-handedly killing the game entirely.
