Yeah, this is certainly not good for the WPBA, one of the worst moves they could have made not letting John do his thing. Pool players running things does not work well most of the time, John is an accomplished businessman who could have made the WPBA better then ever IMO. What is the over and under on when the WPBA is over and out?

From what I have heard, you are in the minority with this opinion.

I don't have an opinion one way or the other, but a close friend of mine who is on the WPBA did a little dance when she heard the news.

Linda Chan was touted as the great outside businessperson savior as well.

Sorry but the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, you have to change with the times and the WPBA has not. I think some people in the WPBA wanted John gone for personal interest like ties to companies but what do I know anyway. The WPBA was in trouble before John and should have let him do his thing, now we will see where they end up. I do hope they find a way out of the mess they are in but it looks bad, the reality is they might be dancing with themselves.

What do any of us know really? They may have been in trouble, but he might have made it worse. He had 6 months to work and nothing to show for it but civil war inside the organisation. Hopefully, the membership will be able to come together and work toward a better future.

I hope so - because I like the ladies and don't want to see the WPBA fold.

For the last 10 years the WPBA has been the best organization in pool when you consider they were consistently on ESPN. If the WPBA tanks that would be a serious downer. It's really discouraging considering recent events with snooker, the failure of the Galveston tournament and nothing on the horizon that serves as a light at the end of the tunnel. :frown:

I'd like to see Mark Griffin at the head of the WPBA (if he wants it). I believe he could get the WPBA back on solid ground. Might never be 8 tounaments a year with $14,000 going to the winner each time, but smaller purses, smaller entry fees, and 10 or more tournaments a year is a lot better than they have now. Johnnyt

I think they would be much better off forgetting about ESPN.

Consider that ESPN wants to control the show way to much with changing the format and stuffing full of commercials so the match is short and edited out mostly.

Live streaming would serve them better. Look into there own streaming site and put on commercials of their choice that they would be collecting revenue from.

But the WPBA has high dollar sponsors because of television. Streaming reaches a MUCH smaller audience than ESPN does. And advertisers are paying to get their product in front of hundreds of thousands of eyes instead of thousands.

Of course, the question does come up of whether they would need those same high dollar sponsors without the television production costs.

I will chime in on this part of the thread.

Costs for the players will never go down....we still need to fly, book hotels and rental cars....so smaller prize funds would seriously affect us. So...we would need the sponsorship dollars still. The casino $$ and the TV production expense would be a wash...but to keep the prize funds high enough to draw the top players...we would still need sponsor $$. Which we probably would not get without ESPN.

i understand the size difference in the audience but alot of people like seeing it live. to finally see the WPBA finals LIVE might be a bright new spot in LIVE streaming. It just may break some streaming audience records !

So maybe it cancels each other out then. right ?

Melissa, your on the inside, if your able to could you give us your insight on what the WPBA needs to do or is looking to do to breathe new life into the organization? I really do hope that you ladies continue on and grow stronger but there has to be a plan. I know ESPN attracts a good deal of sponsors for the WPBA but are the expenses of doing this worth what the sponsors are giving, I assume if the casino picks up the tab for ESPN then it is but I am assuming most as of late are not or will not hence less events.
