Pro Pool Players Can't Make A Living!

They don't give back (most of em)....& what's in it for me, permeates their bottom line character.

They are ''always'' looking for and Angel....(an angle) to better their position, w/o disclosure of their true intentions.

Bonus Ball had some good ideas, but it was a weird new game with special balls and was bad. Add to the fact the folks behind it shat where they ate..... it flopped.
With the current image of pool among the general population, there will be very few corporate sponsors willing to take a risk. In fact the last big one was RJ Reynolds in the 90s. So in the heat of tobacco company lawsuits and Don Mackey screwing the players, that failed. There was a liquor sponsor for womens pool for a while. Canadian Club..... With ads about hard drinking women, that wasnt a good image from the get go. IPT was destined to fail as it was headed by the biggest con man in this country. People couldnt or wouldnt or didnt want to see what was coming. All they saw was a payday, so all the eggs go into one basket and Trudeau stole the basket.

At the end of the day theres two main schools of thought. Some people think the scumbag hustler/gambler image would sell and think thats what the public craves. Others try to clean it up, and that is an uphill climb because the stereotype came from somewhere..... :sorry:
So personally I think if the game were cleaned up and packaged in a professional way it could get some money behind it from outside of the industry. But its a lot easier said than done.

The image given by Poker players is not one that I would send my child toward. People like watching Poker, because of the Pocket Cam. Without the camera, things might change. But the Poker doesn't reveal any real personalities until after the fact or before the fact.

Maybe the public Pool playing watchers need to see some cash floating around with "in your face side bets", let the "rail birds " sing into the Mics, for added stimulation. Do away with "Alternating Break Shots", running rack after rack adds some emotion to the mix.

One thing that could be gleaned from BB is to build some city rivalry around the players, invite the Mayor to the match & pump it up on facebook, twitter & AZB before hand. Have some roving mics with personalities holding the mics, they'll get plenty of . attention while the play-goes-on. Kill the sterility of most tournaments. Maybe a few tournaments could be taped, then streamed after all the HOOPLA. Maybe a few "free-for-alls" would add some ZEST....

Good Luck...

NitPicker,
There is some truth in your last sentence yet other sport were once a game what makes them popular is the interactivity of making it possible to watch them. There are some things with pool that I think deserve being addressed but even then it will be a long time before popularity is likely achieved.

I think pool is supposed to be fun and social for beginners and we ....should be extending invitations to other demographic groups.

No new people is just stagnation.

I agree. But pool is not a simple game. Unfortunately we live in the age of microwaves...and folks want everything in a matter of milliseconds. My last sentence was just an opinionated thought that playing games of any type isn't really livelihood. Or maybe shouldn't be...unless you think a pro sports player should be paid millions while a teacher who helps shape future members of society can barely make ends meet. Not much of a living there either...

Some of you keep acting like I think I have some amazingly dark secret that is going to revolutionize the game. For about the fifth time to some of you dolts that obviously don't listen...there is no revelation!!!! It is not some deep dark secret! I don't have some great idea that is going to change pool that nobody else has thought of!!!!

Do I have to keep saying this? I've been at work for several hours so I haven't been able to keep up with the conversation but I will be happy now that there have been many contributions to my questions...which is what I originally wanted.

I have seen some of you actually mention some of these things that I am going to mention and I applaud you for that. Now, let me explain some of the obvious answers that some of you think I am arrogant about (like I have it and others don't).

All you pros who are irresponsible, cussing drunks or dopeheads or whatever other vices you have...clean yourself up!

Show respect when you see ladies around but especially kids. Stop saying that your filthy language doesn't bother them! It doesn't matter whether your comments bother them or not...it is simply bad manners and it runs off a certain percentage of people who don't want to be around it.

Dress in clean, proper attire without your pants hanging halfway down your butt (if that applies to you)!

For those of you scumbags who have set your eyes on other people's money, stop trying to hustle money from unsuspecting people who just want to go out and relax or have fun or whatever makes them happy.

Here is an absolutely true story (no exaggeration whatsoever). I had to meet a man and his son because they wanted to buy a piece of equipment from me (not related to pool). I asked them if they could meet me at a pool room that was centrally located between us. The man said that would be fine. The time came for us to meet but I got tied up and called him to let him know I would be a little late. He said that he and his 11 year old son would go into the pool room and play a couple games of pool.

I thought to myself, "Oh no...he is going to take his kid in that place?" I thought that because I know what kind of music they play in there. I arrived about 20 minutes later and saw them standing outside. I had a feeling in my gut but I was going to wait and see what the dad said as to why they were standing outside.

He said to me, "that's the last time my son and I are ever going to set foot in that place again!"

I knew it! I thought that something like this might happen. The dad told me that they were playing pool when a song came on the jukebox that was the most vulgar song he had ever heard. It was full of "F" words and misc. body parts and various sexual acts. He told me he couldn't get his kid out of there fast enough!

Now...for all of you people who might say, "well he needs to explain what all that stuff is to his kid anyway." My suggestion to you is..."GROW UP!

Or...those of you who are absolute dumbasses and don't know what it is to be respectful and teach a kid at the pace that is right for them based upon their own particular morals, just keep showing that kind of lack of respect to others and continue to watch as millions of people decide that they don't want to get near your favorite hangout.

Pool room owners: play that kind of music or allow your patrons to select it on your jukeboxes if you like. Have a blast! I mean...it is your pool room after all and you should be able to do with it as you will. Don't complain though when you have a huge percentage of the population decide that your place is a filthy business that they wouldn't mind if it burnt down.

I enjoy pool. There is a poolroom that I frequent quite often. I don't take my wife there and you can bet I never will because I don't want her in a place that allows that kind of music to be played. She would be horrified if she went there no matter what I said though.

On another note; I sometimes want to shout to the 150 or so people that are in there on any given night when I hear some of that music being played. I want to ask who let a 12 year old kid select what music is played.

Why do I say that? Because listening to all of the sexual innuendo reminds me of when I was in elementary school and went to the restroom. I would see drawings on the wall and all kinds of cuss words. You see...that is what 12 year olds do. Why? Because they're kids who are just learning about sex and they are entertained by that stuff.

I don't blame the so-called artists who wrote and performed those songs because they were wanting to make a lot of money. Well, they are certainly doing that. It's the dumbasses who play that stuff who I think are the total idiots that need to grow up and join the adult world. Or you can keep doing the equivelant of drawing peepees and weewees on the wall along with your favorite cuss words.

Meanwhile...you poolroom owners who allow that stuff to be played, it 's your choice so keep doing it if that's what you want in your room. Or you can create more of a family atmosphere. If all room owners across the US would do that...over the course of a few years, pool would take on a different look and bring in millions more people who want to bring their kids into your rooms.

When families are coming in...corporate sponsors know this because they do a lot of market testing. When more people are playing pool, they find watching pool to be far more interesting. When they are interested, they start watching many more tournaments.

When that happens, corporate sponsors buy airtime and start putting their name on tournaments. Players start making more money. A cycle of profitability is created, nurtured and begins to grow at a rate that hasn't happened before.

I know, I know...some of you don't think this would bring more money in. If you feel that way, you're incorrect! But even if you were correct...it's called respecting the values of other people without being offensive!

In short, clean up your game, both inside and out! Be respectful of others by not cussing in front of anybody you choose. Stop playing filthy music (excuse me, that's not music...it's trash). Yeah I know, I'm a racist because I don't like that stuff! Like I said, grow up if you think that way!

Now...there isn't one new thing or some great epiphany that I just mentioned. It is just basic respect for other human beings. It is being kind by not trying to hustle someone out of their money or keeping your trap shut if you don't know how to talk without cussing.

Many of you don't do any of these things that I just mentioned. Good for you but...like I said, it isn't rocket science. It's just basic human respect!

By the way...the owners of the room that I frequent are some of the nicest people you could want to meet. They have all treated me with respect and they consistently show me that they enjoy me being there.

Maybe so but i dont see who they could "give back" to that would do anything for the game. It's a cult sport basically. If my memory was better i could probably predict 80% of the the fans in the first 2 rows for any future tournament.

I have become very disappointed in a lot of pro players this past 18 months or so. I only ask them to ask their local room owner to get on board by calling Joe, going to the ABC website or just to form their group of players. I don't know the percentage that have lifted a finger but its real small :(
I stopped begging them to build a tour for themselves and have switched my attention to people who love the game and want to improve not only their game but our sport.

I understand this comment! you just did not dangle the carrot. they are selfish and need a carrot 10% cut for administrative help and they would be more responsive in my opinion. i have no first hand knowledge just a gut feeling about this one!

Danny Green built a nice regional tour!
MID ATLANTIC had the 1st texas express regional tour!
Ozzy built a nice regional tour!
Shannon built an nice regional tour!
Jose Burgoss a nice regional tour!

it can be done just hard long distance like that! I remember the APA beginning in my area the first of its kind at the time. They dangled the carrot for the leg work and leagues flourished. Sad that some leagues are PARASITES feeding off of pool fans. But, they deserve something for running the event and headache. Just sad that they drain the players and can't fund a pro event to coincide with their championship to promote interest in the game. They do not feel it is ADVERTISING dollars put to good use. But, what do I know?

Disillusioned

Twinkletoes,

I read your rant and the pain you feel a lot of us feel the same way.

The problem is the demographic some owners are drawing from, that in itself is not a lot of help in creating popularity and that's just the beginning.

That's why I believe in Pool Club Concept. I think it has a chance to at least draw in a better demographic, which is desperately needed. In the meantime join the ranks of the disillusioned.

Whoever said you have nothing earlier in this thread was right.

Exactly my point JC! It is such a shame that so many people agree with you that these things are not important! Meanwhile...keep watching as the game of pool oscillates every now and then as far as human interest is concerned...but for all intents and purposes, stays on its current path!

I don't think what you mention is the problem in the least. It's a problem but not the problem.

The problem is that watching pool is life threateningly boring for the average person. This has not changed and will not change for the same reason the scorpion stung the frog half way across the river.

The prize money in other sports comes from advertising dollars. Pool simply doesn't generate enough viewers to justify advertising from any but the most pool-oriented companies (and they have woefully small marketing budgets).

Pool has tried many changes to make it more viewer friendly: fast games like 9-ball, new games like Bonus Ball, and so on. But even pool players are a tough audience to attract to watch pool. Bottom line is that 99.999% of people find pool boring.

We love it, but we're the other 0.001%

BTW, golf and tennis viewership is trending down and it's being reflected in the ad dollars and prize money. Young people just aren't taking up the games.

Just My .02

At this point there are 112 post to this thread. When ChicagoRj and I organized our Chicago get together, we posted it over 6 weeks in advance and took a pole so we could pick a date that suited the most people. 14 people showed up. I wonder how many of the regular people posting an opinion on various subjects , including this one, actually get out and play pool? By the way, we had a great time, going to do it again soon.

Looking for the donkey show in Tijuana came to a more satisfying conclusion than this thread. {HINT, they're ain't no donkey show in Tijuana}

I had no interest in watching pool until I started playing it a lot. Now...I find it very entertaining. So would about 10-20% of those who could be attracted to the game if the present players would clean up the game's players and conditions.

The boredom that has been described in the last few responses shouts loud and clear why the present conditions have gone on for so long and will continue.

Which is why I said that my answers would not be enjoyed. Some people just make things a whole lot harder than they need to be.
