Problems with Perry Weston and the ACA.

Aca

I think the ACA is in the early stages of trying to grow and reach out to more cuemakers, not new as an organization.
Whether or not the ACA is a tight knit organization or not has nothing to do with this issue.
I don't see how the ACA can get involved in every squabble between the customer and the builder.
That's what AZ Billiards is for.

From the outside looking in without seeing the cue in person, it sounds like the problems joeyb has with the workmanship, material selections,
even the wrap, would be a lot of work to fix, and Perry Weston just doesn't want to do it.
I don't know if Perry Weston works alone or has others working on cues,
but it makes you wonder if someone else in his shop did the work and PW
is being overly defensive.

Joey just emailed me the pics of this cue. Jesus, Perry.... how did you let that leave your shop? I noticed one of the inlays weren't even centered and some of the silver work looks fuzzy from shavings. This doesn't look like a cue made by a "cue master" at all.

No wonder the OP is freaked out after spending all that money. This is a pretty obvious hack-job. PW should refund this guy's money with the QUICKNESS or the ACA should step in a demand that he provide a refund --- end of story.

I think if I paid that money on-the-blind and opened the box to find this.... I wouldn't have been as nice as the OP after his first "I'm concerned" email was declined.

That cue looks bad - shame on PW for even sending it out at all.

Please post photos of this thing

I had posted the photos and took them down at Joey's request. Anybody who would like to see the photos can contact Joey.

I would say they clearly verified his claims.

The diamond inlay on top of the point (left) isn't even centered. There are silver shavings making the silver diamonds fuzzy. The forearm is def wrong - and the wrap looks bad. I'm lost as to why PW didn't make this right. Maybe he was embarrassed?

I don't get it either. Perry Weston has made so many awesome cues. Why this? Why now?

I still wonder if he actually made the cue.
Are there other people working in his shop?
Does he use 4th and 5th axis CNC machining equipment?
The Perry Weston cues i've seen look a lot different.

perry,

do you have any concept of how much $$$ this will cost you?

Wake up, smell the coffee and make this right

I don't know anything about him or his operation. This cue does have his trademark bulge at the butt sleeve, but I cut it off in the photo collage. (edited - photos removed).

This kind of reminds me that occasionally you just got to start over rather than try to fix the stuff...

Actually it reminds me of 2 other cuebuilders that either didn't want to fix the problem or felt that the cue wasn't "high end" enough for them to be concerned about.
I also think that the email mentioning other people reviewing his workmanship may of set him off a little.
The complaint to the ACA really set him off, but the relationship was over by that time, and joeyb had nothing to lose.

I have a beautiful new 6-point amboynia burl cue just sitting in a case that
is going to cost me about $300 to get fixed.
All communication was done over the phone, no emails, but a similar
response from the builder.
We were just chatting, everything was fine, but when I mentioned the problem his attitude completely changed and he went off.

Scratch Perry Weston off my list. I understand people are human and make mistakes but when you're paid to deliver a quality product at least make the effort to try to do right. Guess he doesn't read AZ Billiards.

So considering the ACA was formed in 1992* around 18 years ago. When does it stop being an organization in it's early stages? Just asking.

Thanks

When it has at least one person working full time for the organization.

These guys are all independent businessmen and very busy. I doubt the members who serve in positions of responsibility receive much if any compensation. They do the best they can with the resources available to them.

I agree it would be beneficial to the organization to maybe have some sort of review process in order to maintain a level of service and quality of its members. There may be one in place already I don't really know.

I hope the OP is able to reach some sort of resolution that is satisfying to him. It would suck to pay for a cue, wait for its completion and to be disappointed at the end of the process.

The quality of workmanship on this cue is atrocious. I'm sure that the OP paid top dollar for this cue since Weston's stuff is expensive. The cuemaker should never have had this leave his shop. The cuemaking industry is a small one, and this kind of notoriety will undoubtedly leave its mark.

Sorry that the OP got ripped off.

Hmmmmm

I don't think it matters if Weston made the cue or his "helper" did. His name is on the darn thing, his reputation is on the line, and folks are buying on that reputation. And how many cues could this shop be sending out per week...2 or 3 at best... So, he can't take 60 seconds to look at a cue before it gets sent out to a customer to ensure it meets his "exacting" standards !! Geez... He basically sold him a very expensive piece of fire wood as far as I'm concerned. And the customer acted a lot better than I would. And I can tell you I would be dragging his hack A** to small claims court over this with some testimony from another expert cue maker. Absolutley embarrassing.

And regarding the ACA, most Homeowners Associations, and some not-for profits, and many other business don't have any full-time employees, but they can and do make tough decisions everyday to ensure things are working. The ACA could have a 3-memeber panel review the cue (mailed at the customers expense) and make a decision, and at least order a suspension if not rectified ASAP if said cue is below standards. And Weston gets back into ACA once ordered corrections are made. In this case, a NEW cue is warranted IMHO....this can't be fixed, it's a freakin MESS.

Well flat out if you're going to operate as a medium organization you have to stand behind your "mission statement" or you lose all credibility. I don't care if you're a one man operation offering your services part time weekends only on the 3rd month of every leap year. Either you are what you claim to be or you're not.

I'm a small business owner and I've never in all my business dealings left a customer with the impression that they'll have to "live with it". I've gone back to correct the most absurd unheard of unreasonable demands because I stand behind what I offer.

I'm not familar with the ACA but the OP has a valid argument. As far as the cuemaker goes I don't care if the OP called it uglier than his momma...he should have refunded or rebuilt. I'd consider small claims court as that piece is likely delivered "not as advertised or represented".

Good luck.

Thanks for the headsup, this AZ community is great. I think any cuemaker that screws a customer like this should get all the publicity he deserves. Mr. Weston needs to make it right, give a refund, take the cue back, and burn it. I wouldn't buy a used cue made by him either, let alone a new one, because I may have to deal with him someday.

As far as the ACA goes in this kind of customer vs member situation, they are losing a lot of credibility if they claim a customer can go to them for relief and then not see to it that relief is provided. Especially after seeing the mess this cuemaker made of the cue he delivered.

Amazing.

I can see that the ACA doesn't like to get involved with their members private transactions. Think of what would happen if they had to deal with
every problem that their members had with customers. Thats not their job or intention.
Tho, when you read the ACA mission statement it would seem that they
have higher expectations of their membership.

When Perry sent the email back to Joey and told him that the ACS doesn't give a crap, then he was speaking on behalf of the organization. From the lack of disciplinary action, this was obviously the impression that he received from his discussion with the president of ACA.

Pretty bold I'd say.

Joey sent me the pics that were posted here. I'd be sick to my stomach and livid if I were in his shoes.
After all of this, even if it were to be resolved, I wouldn't shoot a game with that cue if my life depended on it nor would I p i s s on it if it were on fire. Same goes for Perry.

Good for Joey and good for the AZ community for being here to receive this info.

I hope that Perry gets wind of this thread and that his reputation sucks crap accordingly.

I'm still waiting for someone to show me where the ACA claims that it will mediate disputes between customers and members of its organization.

If you have a problem with Brunswick do you call the BCA ?

No one knows the whole story here except for the OP and Mr. Weston. To start taking shots at a great group of people for failing to do something no one has yet proven they claim they would do is not exactly fair.
