Quitting while your ahead.

Man have times changed. 25 Years ago when you matched up you played until the loser ran out of money or he quit. This meant matches could last a long time (10 hours plus). I played one time for 28 hours non stop. There are players who have played several days before busting their opponent. Back then quitting as a winner was wrong and would be considered bad action.

Today I have seen matches where someone asks you to play and if they win the first set they quit. BAD ACTION!!! Everybody seems to want to take a flyer at somebody. They will risk loosing a set knowing their opponent will lose 3 or 4 sets. Thats 4-1 on the money. NITS!

I am 56 years old now and if I decided to gamble with somebody I will tell them that I will play up to 6 hours. My opponent can decide if he wants to play me or not. I TELL THEM THIS BEFORE WE START PLAYING.

EXACTLY! If you wanna match up, you should have a lunch with you unless you specify before hand. REP to you sir.

Two simple rules

I use only 2 simple rules for money games

1. Pay at the end of each game .....a " race to " constitutes 1 game for the purpose of payment.

2. Any player can leave at any time.....

Once a player agrees to these simple provisions, I find arguements over quitting are few and far between.

It is amazing how much things have changed in the last 10 to 15 years. Many of the "gamblers" now would have been labled nits for sure and would have never been in action years ago. I personally have had guys ask me to play then win one set and lose one see then want to quit. Maybe I am just old school, but this is extremely aggravating. I have now adopted the strategy that i will only play ahead sets with the money froze up. You can also agree to a time limit and then pro rate the result if you get to the time limit. This will eliminate the problem. The other good thing is that if you match up well you insure a decent win rather than winning one or two games or one set and having a guy quit.

2010 Rulebook to Pool Gambling

1. I am allowed to quit at any time
2. You are only allowed to quit if you are down or busted
3. I am allowed to change the rules at any time
4. You have to follow the rules as I see fit
5. I don't make bad hits
6. If you ask someone to watch the hit, then you know you are making a bad hit
7. If I don't win, you are a nit or you cheated

:D

All this crap is why I only gamble with friends for small stakes.....if I'm gonna lose, at least I'm giving money to someone I like.....

this subject comes up pretty regular and its always the same story. This is sorta like asking who is pro life or pro choice. The arguments on both sides are good, the camps are divided and there will be no convincing the other side their position is wrong.

play to your strengths

First let me say that I do believe in playing to whatever you negotiated to begin with or whatever block you have negotiated to last. However at the end of each bet either person has fulfilled their verbal contract and there is no reason they can't quit. A lot classier to give the other player some warning that you are planning to quit and if you are working with a drop dead stop time let them know that early too.

However, inside these loose guidelines, play to your own strengths. When I was a youngster it wasn't unusual to work twelve hours in a plant doing heavy work or on the drill floor of an oil rig, play pool twelve hours, back to work, back to the pool tables, for several days running. Now four to six hours, maybe eight, is as long as I feel able to play my best pool even without doing other things.

When I owned horses I didn't put my distance horse in a sprint or my sprinter in a distance race. Why should I play to the other person's strengths instead of my own? I never figured pool was like a foot race, I thought it was a game of skill. Part of that skill is picking the race you are best suited for and staying within your limits. If you are a sprinter, set up sprints. If you are a grinder set up grinds upfront, don't hope to combine sprints until they become a grind and then get upset if the fish wiggles off of your hook when they start to fade.

All arguments aside, why would you ever want to quit winner? You just won, right? So play him again and win again. That is, unless you hate money...or you got lucky and want to run away like a b1tch before your luck runs out.

personally I think you should always give the guy a chance to win his money back...not saying that I do that, but thats cause I'm a greedy coward.

Yes I agree. Everyone should always give ME a chance to win my money back with an adjusted spot!!:D

poolhustla61508...I wasn't calling you a sucker. I didn't mean "you" as in you yourself...I meant you as in "one". Sorry for the misunderstanding.

if you read my whole post, I said it was my first time really gambling and I thought at the time when you were gambling it wasn't right to quit while your ahead if the other person wanted to keep playing. But as I said I was new to the gambling scene at the time so there's no need to call me a sucker....I know better now

I agree with Scott. Where does it say in any bible ,book or tablet that you have to give the loser a chance to win back his money? If that is the case what is the sense of gambling? It does not make sense. If one gambles and loses his money in pool or cards or anything else he should be happy if he gets carfare home from the winner. If you can't afford to lose then do not gamble. If a horse player goes to the race track and loses his money the track does not run special races so he can win his money back.

If a winner is fool enough to let the loser cajole him into letting the loser try to win his money back shame on him if his luck turns and he becomes the loser instead of the winner.

I grew up with the loser deciding when the game is over. Otherwise you were bad action.

Now with a job and responsibilitys, I ALWAYS tell my opponent when we start how long I can play.

1. If you can't play for an indefinate period of time, ALWAYS disclose how many sets or how much time you have.
2. If you didn't follow number 1 and quit winner, its nitty.

Ian

That's pretty much the "old school" way of doing things. Unless some circumstance makes it impractical, I still believe this is the best way.

I beat him for 3 plus hours then I started to get fatigued it was 1:15am and I had already told him we could pick it up again another day. Out of respect and against my better judgment I agreed to continue. I respect this player and I realy wanted to see how I faired againstt him. The whole time I was the favorite. He didnt out play me he just had more gamble left then me. I learned a great lesson and proved something to myself.

A. Im good under pressure, since most of the matches went hill hill.

B. Im a nit for allowing the money and the respect to be weighed equally.

Thanks for the input guys. I feel like I have learned a valuable lesson. I understand that back in the day the winner never quits. Back then though most gamblers werent tournament players and vice versa. Or atleast thats how FATS puts it in his book. The Bank Shot and Other Great Robberies.

Thanks guys

IRONMAN- whats so funny. Im not sure if your laughing cause I wanted to quit or becouse its funny to see me winning and gambling. LOL:wink: Hey we need to meet up so I can get you that cash!!! I feel horribal, come out to 6 pocket one day.

Now this is just stupid. I've never seen a bookie, or a casino, or a horse track quit winner. In fact, I believe they'll gamble with you all night long 'til the cows come home...even if they're losing.

Now that i know i'm diabetic i always tell whoever i'm playing that i might have to quit after 2,3 or 4 hours if i don't feel good.

If i have to quit there is always tomorrow. I'm not going to run away.

I was playing some guys in memphis, tenn some 500 sets. Had them stuck but that was back before i knew i was diabetic. The last set we played i had to use the bathroom about every 5 minutes. Part of being diabetic if your blood sugar is too high.the table was next to the bathroom. These guys used it for an excuse to really shark and rag and complain about the bathroom. I lost the set and quit.

Jesse bowman walked up to these guys and said a few words. He was kind of upset with how these guys were treating me. It was pretty sad.

Jesse told these guys that they shouldn't be doing this to me and that 10 years ago you couldn't even carry this guys chalk. I really appreciated his comment.

This was when i was trying to play in 2008 in misourri. I was killing myself with the food not knowing what was wrong. I'd play great for 2 hours and then couldn't make a ball for 1.

I sure hope i get a chance to play this guy with his buddies around now.
I'd bust'em.

They also cried because i quit. I felt like i was going to die. My ankles were swelled up and my feet hurt so bad.

If someone wants to quit playing me sure, i might be dissappointed but hopefully they will play another day.

One time i played whitey lee from lacrosse back in 1982. I lost the set on the hill for 200. He went to the back of the poolhall to the bathroom and left out the back door. I was waiting for about 20 minutes and finally realized that he had just left.

It was a smart move though because every time we played after that i won everytime. He never did explain to me why he ducked out the back door. But i think he just knew i had a little to much fire power.

I thought it was kind of funny.

give notice ahead of time that you plan to quit and you greatly reduce the chance there will be problems when you quit.

quitting winner after a few sets or one set and your a nit and bad action imo.

X2. Quiting just doesn't feel right to me if I'm up and the guy wants to keep playing the same way. I usually say that I need to go after a given number of sets. If I am up 4 bets I will usually ask if they want to raise it so that they can feel like they had the chance to get even. That gets me back interested and I bear down again.

If someone up and quit me after a few sets with no good reason, they would never have the chance to win my money again.

BTW, there are a few folks at the room I play at that often quit winner. They always ask me to play and I know that I have the best of it, but I won't play just for that reason. I couldn't sleep at night knowing one of those nits beat me for the money.

Why is it ok to quit "loser" but not ok to quit winner? Im sorry but i have quit winners before because i got tired and actually let my opponent win back some of his money back. I was tired and felt like i was giving away the money that took me awhile to win. And i just can't justify doing that.

Depends on how much the casino is losing. Im pretty sure they got the odds in their favor too which could be considered "nitty" imo.
