Quitting winner...eh, when can I quit

' Gambling Ethics' ?

Ethics contradict gambling behaviors.Ethics are derived from moral values.

More appropiate way of refering to that situation should be ' unwritten code of conduct' among the gamblers.

It is like ' Ethics ' among the criminals. Ethics and criminality contradict each other.many criminals in the prisons don`t like child molestors. That is funny.

This logic is fine if you don't plan to gamble in this location again. If you quit a guy, winners with no notice or no prior agreement you'll quickly be labeled a "NIT", "BAD ACTION", and yes you'll be accused of not using good gambling ethics and courtesy, rightfully so!

Smart gamblers either set time limits before they start or at least tell the opponent in advance that you're getting tired or have to get home soon and that this will be the last set tonight and offer to play again at a better time, before quitting winners. The analogy about quiting winners at a casino is bogus. It's a completely different scenario.

I'm not saying you have to play until the guy wears you down and gets even, but there are ethics in gambling and quiting winners with no prior notice is a breech of those ethics. Sure, you can quit, but in the long run, if you want to gamble in that same spot in the future, it pays to show some courtesy. You'll get more opportunities to win again. When you're labeled a "NIT, or BAD ACTION" it will bite you in the ass eventually!

Sherm

I am not saying to never discuss anything before hand or lay down some ground rules to avoid controversy.
That is a given for any serious gambler.
But many times, you take precautions, to no avail. Regardless of what you do, the person who is stuck when quitting time comes, gets upset and feels justified in doing whatever, so that they either don't have to pay at that moment, or they get a shot to win their money back.
All because they are only allowed to win, and can't be quit on when stuck in their minds.

WHY GAMBLE THEN?
All precautions aside, if you can't handle someone quitting winner, then you shouldn't be gambling in the first place.
Too many people think that despite the money being in another persons pocket when they are losing and paying after each set/game, that the money is still THEIRS!
This is the biggest load of poo around.
If i am gambling, and i have your money in my pocket, it is now MY MONEY, and i can do whatever i want.

I can certainly understand if someone who got quit on doesn't want to give a guy action, and honestly, i feel that this is stupid.
I've gotten quit on, and while it was annoying, that didn't stop me from wanting to pound the guy the next time.

If anything, it gave me reason to PLAY BETTER so as not to get stuck, so i could be in the drivers seat.

If anything, the guys who whine and complain that they got quit on are the ones with the problem.
If they don't like losing, PLAY BETTER!
It's all relative anyway, and nothing is absolute.
Example.
I have seen several time in life, where a guy quits winner, and his opponent gets all bent out of shape and vows to never give him action again.
And watched as the guy asked him to play the next time he comes in, and when he refuses, the guy goes and plays someone else, and gets absolutely pounded and empties out for a large amount of money.
And Mr. undies-in-a-wad watches this and feels like a total idiot.
Funny watching how that NIT/BAD ACTION label gets tossed out the window when a player realizes he can make a score.

And people do not really care about labels.
People with labels get action all the time.
There are stone cold criminals in the pool world who get all the action they want, and you think that someone who quits ahead is going to have his action dry up?
Dead wrong.

Threads and replies like this are what is making the pool world what it is today. This is lame and pathetic.

Wow.

You know what makes the pool world what it is today?

When you have someone walk off the set of what is supposed to be a televised ESPN finals, because he can't handle getting his ass handed to him on account of a soft break that happens to be working better then his break.

When you have a guy show up in the pool world and throw a boatload of money into his high end events, who adds a gimmick about how there will be extra prize money for every 8ball banked for a win, and how immediately, everyone is selling out bankable 8 balls all day long to make extra cash and rip off the system.

When you get 2 professionals who are playing in a one pocket exhibition, who are so obviously trying to cut up the free money that is being paid to them, that they can't even put on a good show for the public.

When you have professional players, playing their friends in matches, collaborating on how to lie about how many break and runs they have during their sets, so they can make more points and move onto the next round when it wasn't earned.

THAT'S why pool is in the state it is today.
You want to blame someone who quits winner with the downfall of pool civilization as we know it today, you are completely out of your frigging mind.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!
That's the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!

Two REALLY good posts in a row.

One method I used for my personal big games was to get in good with the houseman. If I was in a good game and winning, I'd give the houseman a signal to stay open all night long, so I could bust the guy. If I was winning but it was a tough game, I'd tell the houseman to close up at closing time, so I could escape with the money. Of course, I'd give the houseman a tip. Doing this, made me an ethical gambler in the eyes of my opponent.

I think it is bad form not informing your opponent that you are only playing one set (if you win).

Good thing about tournaments, you know the entry and when you lose/win.

Hmm

Really ? There is a certain "gamblers code" ? Let's inspect that code a little closer,, shall we ?
I believe this is really an "old hustlers" code that has moved mainstream !!!

They dump a set if it makes them more money. They hustle unsuspecting suckers by playing at less then full speed or they have an accomplice to help them with the hustle. I think pool players invented the "Dine and Dash" technique. Only gamblers play on "air", without informing their opponent they have NO cash. Sharking is a techique best used with money on the line, is it not ?

Pool players (gamblers) are by nature "rogues and scoundrels" and I mean that in the nicest possible way. I've read Freddy the Beard's book three times and it gets funnier each time !!

So, now they have a "code of conduct" for gambling that they expect the "rest" of us to abide by at all costs... and it always favors the gambler. He wants to keep playing until he busts your dumb A**, and it might take all night, and the code says you SHOULD stay. He can't make NO money if you quit winner !!

The gambler might miss his next three child support payments, but damn it, "we" need to follow this "code of conduct" as to breach it will be morally wrong I guess ?

Actually, when you think about it, that is ingenious. The last scam they have is even when they are losing, they make you sound like the hustler by telling you that you can't quite winner on them because it aint the "ethical" thing to do !!! And it works MOST of the time ! They got all the angles worked out that's for sure.., you gotta love it.... LOL..

I have been tired and played until the guy got even a few times. I enjoyed the game usually and was happy to play a 10 hour session or whatever and break even. I have now said to myself if I get tired I will give the person a warning telling them I have an hour or 2 and I have to go, if they do not like it then oh well. I refuse to let someone get even just because I ran out of gas, we can play another time and if I know them well enough keep the games on the wire.

when to quit

I like to play races to 5, 7, or 9 and give courtesy to the loser of the race if he wants to play again to "get even". but usually win or lose a good time to quit with the minimal of hard feelings is after the second set. you can walk away with his money for both sets or "even" if you lose

If you have a chance to A. Quit Winner, B. Quit Loser, or C. Quit Even, what would be a better time than to Quit Winner??? You are GAMBLING!!! You are trying to take each others money, that's the point. I would rather walk away with the cash than have a happy opponent any day. I quit whenever I feel like it.

Know one ever asked a blackjack dealer if he would like to win back the casino's money!

If you win and quit ahead unannounced (assuming no emergency) then I think that is pretty ****ed up. The best way, like many have said, is to tell your opponent a set time or number of sets or whatever it is you do. If nothing is mentioned ahead of time, your opponent will assume that you are there for a while and won't quit on you ahead all of the sudden. If you set a limit, then obviously you can quit winner or loser.

No, there are no written rules, but think about it.....go around and quit people ahead after winning one set and see how much action you start to get.....won't get it from me that's for sure. I ALWAYS give my opponent a chance to get even unless there is an emergency or if I truly set a time limit.

Just my opinion.

Gamblers and locksmiths

There's just 2 types of people that gamble on pool. Gamblers and Locksmiths.

Gambler- Will play someone without the proper weight just to be in action and have the opportunity to win. Will grind for 8+hours win or lose. Will allow their opponent to raise the bet, go double or nothing or whatever it takes to press the action. They will also ask to raise the bet and double up to make up loses.

Locksmiths- Won't tell the person they are playing that their baby's christening is in a hour. Will cry for weight at least 1 level beyond reasonable, and even when you offer it won't take it because they are scared. Will quit a winner. Won't allow a rematch so the opponent can have a shot at their money another day, ducking. Plays 2 sets and quits wheter winning both, losing both or splitting sets, just to avoid the loss of money and status that losing may bring. Most of all they will bark at you all day, but rarely come off the porch to fight.

You need to know what side of the fence you fall on with this if you're going to bet on pool. I love nothing more than playing $100 plus sets with someone who I know won't just cut and run. Problem is there are so few players who meet the criteria to play that way.

The best move to counter this is to try and determine "what they have to lose tonight", just ask them. They aren't expecting that question and often are very truthful. If they have $200 to lose, so do I period. Why would I be willing to lose $500 plus to a player who has < $100 in their pocket?

Also setup a long race or first to win 3 sets for X amount of money. The winner is the only one who can ask to continue the play, agree to this. That way they can't say you quit a winner.

Bottom line, those that fit the Locksmith criteria are limiting themselves. Less competition and less opportunity to make the cash. Remember the most you ever won is probably not much different than the most you have ever lost. No risk, no reward.

Those that will get into the box and mix it up need to quickly assess their opponents willingness to stay in the fight wheter they are up or down. Otherwise you will end up with a luandry list of players who did the classic hit and run, but find a few who are a good matchup for you.

This concept is blowing me away. Why is it bad to quit winner at a natural break point?
Were playing $10 per rack...I win a 3 and want to go home and eat, etc...can I walk out?
We play race to 9 for $100, can I leave without a return race?
We play for $20, I win three double or mornings, can I leave with $160?
Why do I have to play until you, your family and the ATM are all broke? I'll probably have divorce papers waiting on me at home! Which will cost me more than I won!

My two cents here....

All of these posts start the same way....."I had been playing this guy for a couple of hours, I was up $200, I wanted to go home, and the guy I was playing got all pissy and wanted a chance to win his money back......can I quit winner?"

The answer to this question lies with you and you alone.....if next week, you play another guy, he's up $200 after a couple of hours and wants to go home, and you are 100% happy with him leaving while you are down, then ABSOLUTELY......as long as you are consistent, whether you are up or down, that anyone can leave at any time, then you are cool....

Problem is, people that are up are in a much better position to leave....and people that are down are usually willing to stay longer to try to win their money back.....so a lot of times, the guy who likes to quit winner often may not be as quick to leave when he's down....I have yet to see anyone start one of these posts, "yeah, I was down $200 after a couple of hours, I wanted to leave, and the guy still wanted to play and got all pissy"

As long as you are happy to quit loser when the shoe is on the other foot, then you are consistent....and people may not like that, but they can respect it......unfortunately, methinks quite a few people have a different opinion on the topic when the shoe is on the other foot :D

Big Perm

Big Perm,

I like your post here, and others as well.

Let me ask this. How do you ever make a big score in this game if you quit a winner after 2-3 sets? If I stick somebody and they want to play more I am ready to do a backflip. Up the bet....SURE. Play longer....SURE. This is how money is really made , right?

You present a great point.....truth be told, I have never "taken down a big score".....even when I was single and making tons of money, I was too cheap to bet too much to draw a whale....also, I like to keep it friendly, I don't want to fight my way out of the bar :D

Typically, my max to lose was $100.....whether little races for $20, or even $20 a game....when the hundy was gone, it was time to just kick back, have a drink, and let others battle it out......most I ever left with was probably $500, and that was from mutiple people and a LONG night.....I like to keep it cheap and fun....

I think you make 100% sense though....why leave when they are willing to allow you to keep making withdrawals from their ATM

These days, I'm married and if I promise to be home at 6pm on Sunday afternoon for dinner, I'm leaving at 5:45 regardless of up or down.....but, I'm always willing to match up again later.....I personally think quitting quick-winner is a little chicken sheit, but I can respect somebody that has to go, especially if they have a family....

One on One.. two players matching up.

Both want to gamble. Both have the money 'posted' for an agreed upon number of games or sets.

If you agree to play to a pre-determined end point (3 sets, race to 21 games or what ever) after that is IMO quiting time or time to adjust the bet/race/spot. If no adjustment can be made at that time. Match/game OVER.

Quitting winner is for those players that do not establish an end point for either player to renegociate the match or just quit ahead with the possibility of a rematch later on.

When you play a race to 7 for $X and post up $3X for a minimum of 3 sets. That is what you agree to play, nothing more, unless both players agree. Quitting after the 3 sets is OK. Quitting prior to the 3 sets is OK, if you are getting CRUSHED and wanting to get out of the bet with a SAVER.

Who knows, if you ever want to be able to match up with the same player in the future, you sure don't want to mess up your chances by being the pisser. Future investment.

All this sounds like the guys who shoot a stump into a tree farm. Win a couple games or sets in a tight match and run off.

If you have a sucker on the hook you would probably play all night long and call out of work to keep playing. If it's tough you gotta eat dinner cause your two games up.

Some of you guys are soo sick happy to not be in action with yall. Oh and if the money aint important than run a tab and dont try to get paid...it always has been and it always will be the loser determines when the match is over. Dont like that don't gamble.
