I think that I heard him say that cue DOES NOT have a ferrule. He used a black marker to "draw" a ferrule on it to make it look like one.

I just don't like the idea of one "sourpuss" player checking the refs rack then.....

I have actually played match and years later found out the "rack man" was in collusion with the player. I did lose the match, but it wasn't because of the rack, it was because I missed a key shot that would have won the match.

There's no reason to even look at the rack (if neither player can). It's fair either way, either both can look, or neither can look, I just don't like the idea of one "sourpuss" player checking the refs rack then making an expression like they just bit into a lemon.

Dechaine's shaft is an OB with the laminated maple ferrule. He colored it black for better visibility.

Luther Lassitor used to color his ferrule RED. I'm thinking there is something to this, I may color mine so I can see the TOI Point more clearly, this may improve my precision immediately.

I played in a great tourney in Mn today.

Had some of the young players with their fingers on the tops of the balls. I'm old school but this is a no no even back in the day.

They would pull the 2 back balls just a little away from the 9 ball.

I'm a fast learner but not fast enough. The second young gun got me.

When I told him to get those balls back there tight his reply was: You can't gettem perfect.

He wanted the rack perfect for him.

Some of the young guys think we were born yesterday.
 
Let me tell you about racking and all the bull crap that comes with it.

TToday at the Turning Stone I talked to a legendary hall of famer, A Mosconi Cup member and other professionals about this so-called problem with racking.

I heard that back in the 60s up until around the early 90s there weren't problems with the rack. Everybody just got up there and smashed them and ran out. Also was told that checking the rack should be illegal and the break should be passed to the racker.

I also heard the side of people manipulating the rack, tilting the rack or racking the rack too high. How unfair it is when they make the wing ball and yadda yadda yadda!!! I wanted to throw up all over it all.

I thought about this for some time. Why is American the only country with rack problems? Why? I'll tell you why. Because payouts ssuk and its do unto others before the kick you in the nuts, take your bankroll and screw your girlfriend!!

You know why Mika lost to Morra? Racking!!! That's the word on the street. Even heard Shaw complaining about the rack in the final. Why is this? My answer..... I don't know and I don't care. Suck it up, stop the cheating and play your best game with the upmost respect for your opponent.

Personally I like Zulgans idea. Hang a canopy above the table and pull a draw string to drop the balls onto the table. Wham!!! Both the break and rack issued solved.
 
I also suggested to have a neutral racker such as a volunteer player. Give the guy or gal a chit for lunch or a buffet pass at the hotel. Then, In the Turning Stones case, you won't have cheating with the rack. Mind you the people racking should be players or at least a b level or higher. Is it a tall order? Sure it is but you don't see any player outside of the US racking. OH wait a second!!!!!! That's why we are the only country with rack problems!!! No neutral rackers!!

I agree, the game won't grow up till we have neutral rackers.
...and I think there are many that would volunteer....
...you don't need an accomplished player to rack well...
....they can be taught in a few minutes.

You DO need an accomplished player to LAY a rack on you.

There is not a referee, neutral racker, volunteer, or special gadget that can ever fix the problem. I have tried (and I am not he only one) all of the aforementioned individually and in combination.

I admire your passion and honesty but you are missing something here. When the racking and breaking rules incentivize cheating, players are going to cheat. You believe that the players are the problem. I blame the rules.

The old time rack masters here howl in pain and literally wince like a vampire getting doused w holy water when the magic rack is even mentioned. When i play, I want to beat my opponent with playing skill not my racking techniques. The MR saves time,gives both players the same rack and stops arguments. I am happy that it seems most tournaments world wide have adopted some variation of the MR. I played in the Swanee last year and heard plenty of negative comments that the MR "wasnt " being used .

At least the magic rack is consistent. If everyone is making a ball every time, well then at least EVERYONE is making a ball every time and it doesn't take 5 minutes to rack.

I have the magic rack, accu-rack and delta 13 at home. All three can get a tight rack but I have to agree with you that the magic rack and accu-rack do save a little time in getting a tight rack. I think the Mezz West uses the Turtle Rack but I haven't tried that one yet. And yes, I probably will buy one when it comes out.

In the TAR break video Shane made he thought that the magic rack made about a 25% improvement for most players other than him in ensuring a consistent rack every time.

It seems like there is enough popular opinion and enough magic rack equivalents out there now. What is the justification for not using something like the magic rack in a pro event? Is it possible that it can be manipulated too somehow so organizers don't go that route?

Because of all of this about the break I pulled out the Magic Rack this weekend and worked on my break a little. Even I got the wing ball more often than not on a 9 ball rack with it. Granted, its on a table I play on a lot so I know how it plays, with pretty new Simonis 860 cloth and new Aramith balls so its the best possible conditions but if a C player like me can get a ball on the break that often then a pro will probably do it every time.

However, racking further up with the 9 on the spot changed that right away. I'm sure pros will still find a way to make a ball but it's at least a little more difficult. Make them break from the box to take away the cut break and you might even make it harder for some of them. I agree that the magic rack is a great solution but in 9 ball they also need to move the rack up to reduce the wing ball going in as much.

You hit upon half of it. The Magic Rack is a Dead-Ball Pattern-Racking Gadget. There is a pattern for racking for yourself and a different pattern when you rack for an opponent.
 
Rack Them 8-ball

Make it easy for everybody. Just rack up a full rack of 15 balls and put the 9 in the middle. Break them like 8-ball and then remove any balls higher than the 9 after they break. Make sure they don't pattern rack to keep the 10-15 balls on one side of the rack.

You can do that with any rack. That is common knowledge, I would think.

The SOLO rack is the way to go.
 
Some people at baseball feel the pitcher's mound should be moved farther away.

Soooo...this could be an interesting innovation....
Magic Rack....balls set in a predetermined pattern....
Break Box....one diamond from the end rail...one diamond wide.
....and every round, the location of the diamond is moved to either side of center.





....and Shane has to break one-handed....:smile:
