and jay h he knows pool but would not go for the young guy.
we all know if alex played these guys an all around its a joke.

Chris,
This has been nothing but great fun. When you disagreed with the others here, nobody threw digs at you or insulted you in any way. Keep it clean. :)

i thought you could take a joke but i guess you cant.

I can joke with the best of them. It sounded very much like YOU were getting pi$$ed. My bad.

Don't change nothing cause I love all this woofin'. This has been one of the best threads of the year. I won't ever admit this publically to anyone but you've made me respect Alex's game even more by your posts.

ALEX
NICK
SHANNON
CORNBREAD

"all around" @ the peak of their power, and, in ALEX'S case, is yet to be seen

And, regrettably, may never be seen.

As to what these players actually accomplished, Nick Varner's all-around game, in his prime, stands alone IMO.

i like

1) varner, although i think he played some scary, weird ass one hole at times.
2) shannon, i just think varner would take him no doubt in all except one hole
3) alex

i dont know enough about red to say, but i will say i think alex shoots strait as you can and plays like a chump in one hole. i know he beats everybody, but i dont think he could hold a candle to say cornbread in the knowledge department. shooting strait just means SO SO much even on one hole no matter what nobody says.

Alex and Corey on the road 10-12 years ago was the best road team of the last 20 years. Shannon was on the road at 13, playing men for money. And winning! He also never backed down from a bet. I'm going venture a guess that the great road team of Alex and Corey made a wide berth around Shannon Daulton 12 years ago. .

If these boys kept a journal it would make one hell of a book and movie. Be bigger than TCOM. I remember Alex and Corey running around before they were 21 and could beat 95% of the guys on the Camel Tour but weren't old enough to play in it..lol. I never quite understood why they couldn't wait to play in it. I would love to hear some of their road stories. Hell..i know one..so here it is....

Alex and Corey were at JOBs in Nashville for the Camel Tour tournament, although they weren't able to play in it. They were just there gambling. Alex was playing the 10 ball ghost on the tight diamond when you first walk in. However, there were stipulations; if he made more than 1 ball on the break they spotted up. If he scratched he lost, and something else. Anyhow, Jaime Goodwin was betting most of the money against him, (i think) and it seems like they were playing for 10k. Alex told everybody he was all in on the game and proceeded to lose the first 5 or 6 playing 8 or 10 ahead. Corey was starting to sweat it pretty hard and Alex told him to go to the car and get him a t-shirt and some baby powder. Corey walks back in with the goods and Alex says..." I got my t-shirt and baby powder, I'll let you guys out for half right now.." Of course everybody laughed as it appeared he was going to go empty. Long story short, he beat the game from there.

I was there for that one too. First time I ever saw Alex. He must have been 19 or 20. He got stuck about six games going to eight ahead and it looked like it was all over. They were betting their case money. Once he got rolling, he won almost every game. After he beat the ghost that time, all bets were off. It was a tight table too.

I staked Tang on the Camel tour. He finished tired for 7-8th that week (2.5K) and came in 12th overall on the tour that year - another 8K. His high finishes were two 4th places (4.5K each). He also finished 2nd in the U.S. Open - 16.5K and won the ESPN qualifier in Dallas beating Varner in the finals. Tang won a little over 40K that year, his best on tour. Net win about 25K. He also won another 20K+ gambling. Tang was TOUGH! Just ask Marcus or Santos or Morro.

Was this the one that Reed beat Bustamante in the finals? I was standing around Allen Hopkins before that set and he was saying how Reed had no chance, Busty would roll over him......... I didn't know him, just from seeing him around but I said how much? I thought I had booked a loser but Allen was swiggin a beer and he was a little loud so I called him on it. I was being a little snide in betting him but I lucked up and hit him for a few hundred when Reed stroked out and won the tourney.

I remember Alex winning that game I just can't remember if it was the same event. There was so much good action on that front Diamond there it is hard to believe.

I think you are correct. Pretty sure it was the same event. Reed Pierce was another fierce player. Gave Henny the 7 and last 3 and beat him once...I witnessed it.

Chris,
If we talked 24 hours straight.
10 hour break then 30 hours straight 10 hour break
then i8 hours straight...I think you would STILL say Alex is the best! You are one stubborn dude!

If the game is talking, I like Fats. He could talk for that many hours straight and never repeat himself.

Is everybody willing to stipulate that Efren would beat all of those guys in an all around? He even took down that Maryland 14.1 tournament with Miz and the other top 14.1 players there, and Efren was learning as he went.

That's not fair injecting Efren into this argument.
There are pool players and then there's Efren. They will be talking about him in thirty years just like we talk about Lassiter and Worst today.
