Rating One Pocket Players

i watched cho vs gabe on the stream,i had never seen them play,but Gabe appeared to be the better player by far,now that they have played would gabe move ahead of tony,or would that be just one day.If it was just one day why don't they go at it again?

What might be interesting would be if billy made a line that in his opinion would establish the betting line if the players played a set .Say 10 ahead or race to 25

For example Efren10 to-8 over frost

tony 8to7 over gabe

frost 9to7 over gabe

then we would have the basis for comparison,or even competition

I know of no one better qualified than billy to make such a line(indication of preference) not to be confused with an illegal betting line.

I am glad someone resurrected this thread. I never read a word of it previous to today. It was long but great fun reading all of the posts and learning of the many diverse opinions that everyone has.

At least we all conclude that Efren was and is THE GREATEST ONE POCKET PLAYER THAT EVER LIVED.

I can't believe I went to sleep at the wheel. :o :boring2:

He used to run with Firehole Phil and Two Ton Terry.

I believe his last name was Boogans. Irish boy.

I heard he's still alive.
Phil and Terry have passed.
Phil die in a conflagration in Chicago
and Terry died of heart complications in Beantown.

I tend to disagree with you about Efren Doc! I know he got beat by Scott this year but it was very close and he was playing on Scott's turf. He should have never lost to Alex at DCC either. Their was way too much shooting (IMO) for a guy experiencing the weakening of the eye muscle factor.

I think if and when Efren realizes he can't fire at all those shots from the past and settles down and performs his moving game and cue ball control, that he will still have 3 to 5 yrs left as the master of the table.

I mostly agree with the rest of your picks including Cliff moving down somewhat. However, I might would move Duel up a little bit. Maybe as much as 3 spots.

I really think he would be close to the top if he focused on pool as much as Shannon, Scott, Cliff and some others. However, from what I've heard he puts a lot more time on the golf course than he does on the pool table.

I don't have the access that some of the guys on this site have as far as seeing the top players in action , except at DCC. And of course ,the accu-stat tapes. And....... from what I pick up on this site. Thanks to all the knowledgable players who contributte here. And of course thanks to Steve for all his time and hard work keeping this site going.

It will be interesting to see what happens this year at DCC.

:thumbup: I know for a fact that Earl Heisler busted Eddie Taylor, this was told to me by Eddie Taylor. Earl also used to give weight to Big Nose Roberts. Of course Earl seldom left New Orleans so his best playing was viewed by only the locals. I've staked Cliff Joyner and even took him for a partner against a very good player and I have to say Joyner is unbelievable. The weight he gives up on a daily basis would make most players candidates for the "Funny Farm". :thumbup: :smile: :thumbup:
 
No disrespect to Grady whom I admire, but wouldn't Eddie Taylor have the best of it if they matched up? And I'd like to see S.Cook moved up a couple of notches.
And after reading all these posts I think a case could be made for "the Most Underestimated 1P Champion"-Buddy Hall.

No Nick Varner on Billy or Fred's list?? WTF? He has to be the top 10 in the past 40 years. I saw him beat Scott Frost to death in DCC about 5 years ago for 200 a game. Shocking he hasn't been mentioned!!!:eek:

My list is based on players dead or over the hill, save for Efren who I didnt dare leave out. Cliff is still functional. I am upset with him for getting as much as 10 to 7 from Efren and not winning. Bugs beat Heisler and spotted him in New Orleans. That was in the 70s. The tables were so wet in that joint that they had to replace the cloth every day, in order to wring out all the water that collected from the steamed shrimp. Heisler was nowhere near Taylor's speed. Everybody can be beat once, however. I beat Bugs even for $400 at 30 a game once. So what? Two weeks later he gave me 9 to 8 and 2 out of 3 breaks and pounded me.

Steve has been added down near the bottom. Me beating him in Bensingers cost him a lot of points.
Don Watson and Buddy Hall, as Jersey Red once said, "Couldn't find their pocket with an Indian guide." (I say this even tho Watson won 1big 1pkt tourn in Tampa, and Buddy has won several) Two fabulous players, but you're talking about the wrong game. Buddy wouldnt play Artie without 10 to 8 in my joint, North Shore Billiards.

Yours are excellent lists offered with more insight than almost anyone on the form is capable of, but Johnny Ervolino's absence frm your lists is a surprise.

I was playing a friend of Hubert Cokes in Johnson City a lawyer from Hot Springs. Shorty had him about three players cornered beside our tale where we couldn't play. Hubert went over an talked to them Shorty must have apologized 10 times an they scattered like quail......I don't think many people messed with Hubert..............

I know Vernon for 40 years. We are old pals and I love him like a brother. He was an all-time banker and a terrific 9 ball player, but 1ptk was not his long suit. You may be confusing the fact that Vernon, like Buddy, Portland Don Watson, Ervolino, and a few others could beat 98% of all pool players playing 1pkt, but they were not great 1pkt players.
