Restored Jay Helfert Ginacue

Here are some pictures of the Jay Helfert Ginacue. Before and after.

One picture shows the wild bend in the forearm before the full restoration by Ernie Gutierrez of Ginacue. The cue was almost a boomerang! Now the cue is absolutely stunning.

I was very fortunate that Ernie agreed to take on this project. It was far beyond a normal restoration, and required what some might call a cuemaker`s version of open heart surgery. Voila!

Great zebrawood, just like the original. Ernie`s wife had been using this piece of wood to wrap christmas lights, likely for decades! Wow, it looks much better in person than these pictures can show.

Thanks Ernie, for bringing another piece of Ginacue history back to full playing form.

And thank you Kevin Brewer. As always, it is a pleasure to work a deal with you. This one is a deal!

(I hope these attachments work...my first time at it). ;)

That's awesome, thanks for buying it and doing the project. You have had some awesome restorations done by Ernie so I guess you had an easier time imagining the finished product than I did. That's a great cue now with a cool history involved.

Thanks again and enjoy it

Kevin

Give Jay a break.
He lived in his car for a while .
I don't think a merry widow zebrawood would stay straight for a month.
Cored, yes.
Great job by the man as usual.

You are right about that. Of course the original butt warped like crazy. Ernie went hunting around his house for the old Zebrawood from his first go-round as a cue builder. He found 6 blanks that his wife was using to wrap the Christmas lights on and 5 of those were warped as bad as the cue. The piece he used for Will survived some 40 years and now maybe will be resistant to moving around too much, although I understand it is sometimes after it is worked that wood will want to shift.

I think Ernie chopped off the handle and used that as the forearm .
Then installed a new handle.
Must be nice when you have 20 lathes. Most with collet closer or Pratt chucks.

Right again, his equipment (all designed or built by himself) really really helps. Ernie has a move for everything, almost nothing pops up that is new to him, and he has a separate machine or a setting for everything.

Rarely I'm able to shut up long enough to see him get in stroke when he's working and he moves so seamlessly throughout the stages of building a stick, its just like watching Mizerak run 100 balls was. Nothing to it, no big deal, just pock, pock, pock.

Sweet cue Will, you should bring it up to Shooters with the Ivory handled one, I bet those are really something in person.

Thanks for sharing.

WOW!! OMG, how on earth did Ernie do that? That is really amazing.

BTW, what was the winning bid for the cue?

Based on the FS thread's name I guess this thread's title could have been Restored Jay Helfert Butt or something.

Now, seriously, that is amazing! I just watched the Ginacue video by TAR yesterday and when Kevin mentioned how Ernie moves around the shop, it was easier to imagine.

You could see in the video how he turns a machine on and begins working on it - just like turning the TV on and sitting in front of it watching it. Amazing.

This has to have a lot to do with him having built the machines. Amazing.

Reading that the wood survived 40+ years I guess another 140 won't be a problem.
Super acquisition, congratulations!!!

Ed Kelly Ginacue

Will, awalys remember that when the time comes, 20 years 30 years who knows how long, I'm in 1st position for hte Ed Kelly cue, i'm not big on historical cues unless i know who owned them and even then its not that important, but Ed's Gina cue is important to me.[/QUOTE]

Eric,

When the day comes for me to sell the Ed Kelly Ginacue cue, it will be yours.

Bank on it. (By the way, it still looks new!).

Will

Hi Don, I`ll have them up to Shooters pretty soon. I am just worried you will try to add them to your gaggle of 200 cues!

See you soon.
