Does anyone know if Efren Reyes was in the Tampa-St. Pete, Florida area in 1981? I played A guy straight pool and then some three-cushion at Tom?s Billiards in Pinellas Park A few people, including Tom the owner told me that it was Efren a few days later. I played him one afternoon for about 3 or four hours. That night and the next day they said he broke everyone in the place playing golf on the Snooker Table and then three-cushion. There was a Snooker champ from Canada there that was hustling in the area. Efren? busted him in Snooker and got his car too. Johnnyt

By all accounts, Eren did not arrive in the US until 1985. Further, he went under the alias when he did arrive.

I can't imagine that he showed up in 1981 and played under his real name only to later sneak in under an alias.

Maybe it was Jose? He was said to have arrived in advance of Efren and we all know Parica is as deadly on a snooker table as he is on a pool table. "Playing Off the Rail" discussed his golf exploits in depth.

Now that I think about him not using his real name when first here... it wasn't him. I wonder how they new his name in 1981 though? It could have been 1983 but no later than that. Johnnyt

He was still in the Philippines during the early 80's. I was still playing with him last '81 and if it had been him it would have been big news at Lucky 13. I came here winter of 81 and he was still there and not even a hint of an upcoming trip abroad.

While Efren may have been lurking earlier, his first major tournament exposure in the US was in Houston in January, 1985. Here is the cover of Accu-Stats that had the tournament results:

Maybe you played Efern Rayis, he is the lesser know of the two and comes from Fiji but favors Efren in looks and is just slightly under him in overall skill level.:D

Sounds like it may have been Cannela from Mexico. He was quite active around then in the South. He was a nice looking hispanic guy, and could play all games on any table.

Well whoever the hell he was he didn't get me for more than a $100. I pulled up the brakes fast on him once we started playing for money. The funny part of it was I really liked the guy instantly. He was a gentlemen and pretty funny as I remember. He almost had me hooked. Johnnyt

anyone know if any of the matches from this tourney ever made it on video? ...
That event was in early 1985. I think that Accu-Stats didn't start taping matches until about 1986 or 1987 -- it was all just paper statistics before then. I know Pat was selling tapes at tournaments by 1988.

The only other chance would be if someone was there taping freelance.

I heard that Efren dumped his backers shortly after that, because they were basically ripping him off. Efren doesn't look to happy in that photo, but his backer on the right has this huge evil grin. LOL
