Very sorry to report (and I waited for multiple confirmations) that Mr. John Ross has passed away, anyone who gambled at pool or heard the term "hustler" at one time or another thought of him in their heads. I don't have any information of how he passed or about arrangements/service but will update as that becomes available, very sorry to pass along such bad news especially for the Jacksonville Florida people who just lost Larry Gayle very recently.

Peace,
Neil

That sucks Neil. You couldn't play pool in Jax without running into Johnny and his stories were always entertaining. You and I both had our fair share of Johnny Ross moments and for those I am grateful. Rest in peace Johnny.

Johnny was a great man to be around. He spent quite a lot of time up here in St Louis in the 90s. His trips up here started out during the big flood here and him and Harley came up here with the story that they were selling mattress sets to the flood victims. Johnny was a great hustler and as others stated, a great story teller. Very entertaining.

One of the memories I have in pool is being at the DCC with him at the old Executive hotel. He was telling me stories and cracking me up. We were also sitting there watching Jeanette Lee play in a gambling match. Johnny was super knowledgeable in pool. Time and time again, he would tell me that Jeanette was gonna miss a shot before she missed. He knew here skill level better than she did and what shots she couldn't execute.

I heard that Johnny passed away of a heart attack/blood clot.

He will be missed.

So sorry to hear of this Man's passing. Knew him for a number of years, back when we were both young and running the roads everywhere one could imagine. He could get'em to the table and mak'em like it when they lost. Had a great game of 9 ball, one pocket and played Gin as well as anyone. RIP Johnny Ross

Thank you very much for the story and information watchez, he had a huge heart and was a very giving person who ALWAYS had a story to tell or "secret" to share. The man is a legend in my mind and I feel for the Jacksonville pool scene which had this group of 5-6 players that all grew up together and are slowly being disbanded by these untimely deaths. Can't stop the hands of time.

i knew johhny and his older brother Joe dating back to early 70s Atlanta. ran into him periodically over the years and always had a ball with him and Harley. the thing i remember most is we were sittin in an all nite breakfast joint in Valdosta Ga and johhny was philosophizing and it all boiled down to "Cash & Gash rules the world". lol

This Gent was the epitome of a road agent. He always dressed well, had the gift of gab, and told stories never ending and would gamble high stakes and not bat an eye. Remember back in the early 80's Johnny defeated Wade Crane in a race to 11 for 1st place in the Greensboro Tourney , that was held there yearly. Johnny had a good game and could hold his own against strong players of the day.

I got to meet Johnny Ross this year at the Derby, had heard about him but had never met him until this year, he played Harry Platus some high dollar one pocket a couple of times , I think they broke about even. Then he came down to Orlando about a couple of months ago and visited our pool room for a couple of hours telling stories, he knew a lot of the guys in the pool room from years back, seem like he was in good health at that time, my prayers are with his family and friends.

I've known John since we were kids (the 60's). He was a double smart gambler, played a good game and was a helluva lot of fun to hang with. I beat him playing 9-Ball when he first came to L.A. and after that we partnered up a few times. The best compliment I can give a gambler is that he was a straight shooter in life. If he was your partner you never had to worry. I'll miss you buddy. :(

That is Johnny -- he told me when on the road, he would travel with a case of wine.

They'll probably remove access to the obit after a period of time so here is a screenshot for the AZB records:

I wish CJ would checked this write up,,he had some great stories about Johnny Ross. The one he posted a year or so about the Rack in Detroit was a great one , that comes to mind. He might not know of JR's passing.

Man he had a whole bunch of funny stories. Good guy , always willing to show you something. I'll never forget something he said that was so funny I laughed till I cried. He was joking around when he said it to this guy in the pool room, ( nothing serious just joking around) but he told this guy that he was so ugly he couldn't get women on death row to sleep with him to get out! Talk about an original. I'll never forget it. I know he'll be missed RIP

Johnny was playing Sam Bloomenthal snooker in Harley's room in Jax and Sam ( who was known to have a little al-kee-hol from time to time ) had been taking a lot of time between shots so Johnny was up at the counter talking with Harley and they look to the back at the snooker table and Sam's passed out cold, standing, but his body from the waist up is laying on the felt. Johnny says to Harley, what should I do? Harley says, hell, go wake him up. So Johnny walks back and wakes him up. Sam stands up, shakes his head a few times... and runs out.

One of Johnny's stories...
