Ronnie Allen story

I only was able to see Ronnie Allen play two times. Once he played Richie Florence out the SF Valley in late 60's or early 70's. The 2nd time was the very early 90's when he brought two guys into Hard Times in Bellflower. They posted a lot of money on the light but then again every light in the tournament room had money posted upon it. The two guys Ronnie was playing were shooting alternate shots while Ronnie shot every other shot onehanded. Ronnie talked the entire time, I mean constantly if not to the two guys he was talking to the railbirds. After several hours Ronnie had the 6K in his pocket and they were breaking down and he was pleading to make a different game and he followed them all the way to the exit door. They never said a word to him. I could never figure if he played as good as he talked or talked as good as he played.

Both... :yeah:

As you know time moves on and the pundits proclaim
a changing of the guard.
We see it every day today when people say,"Efren was the best one pocket player in the world at one time, but now its Scott,or now its Alex or now

These stories have gone on for years , at first it was Ronnie Allen was the best one pocket player who ever lived.Great players like ed Kelley got a ball when playing Ronnie.
rumor was that Eddie Taylor couldn't beat Ronnie

Well our story begins sometime after Ronnie was no longer considered invincible
and at the time Allen Hopkins was considered the best one pock player alive,

Ronnie was speaking to Allen and brought this up,he says to Allen i hear that you are the best in the world now,Allen humbly agrees,so Ronnie ask him ."When did it happen"

"you becoming better than me",Allen shrugged and Ronnie offered to play a race to 4 for some greenbacks to make it official

Allen agreed and they started the race,4 games later the score was Ronnie 4 Allen 0,
game count, ball count was Ronnie 32 Allen minus 4 as I remember

Ronnie was a great, maybe the greatest, what I would give to see some of his old matches on video

I just got to thinking, who really wants to play Efren today,I feel like betting
on the old Magician one more time, don't you?

Dean

I know this is an old post but ill throw this story in. I'd say in 95 or so, Efren and Allen were at Tacony Palmyra, Philly area and Allen challenged Efren to a 9 ball set-maybe $200-not big money. Allen never pocketed a ball, not even on a scratch. Im not sure if they even played another set but if they did, Efren won it.

In the Northeast, AH was regarded as the 'best money player in the world' by a great number of pool players for quite a few years.

Huh?

Your post seems confused; it's about Ronnie Allen, and you seem to be referring to Allen Hopkins.....as evidenced by your reference to "AH" in your last paragraph..........

Huh indeed...he was continuing discourse that involved Hopkins. See the post he quoted.

Give it time to sink in. You will get it.

It's been a while since Ronnie stopped by the house
my wife and kids were excited to see him, they never were allowed to go to the pool room,
but they loved the stories

Ronnie came by to fish in our lake and enjoy some time alone,we ran him some iced tea
or cold drinks every so often. after the fishing he came up and had dinner with us..the conversation
drifted to serious talking about life,God,Marriage and the future.Ronnie seemed open to the talk and expressed serious regrets about his life, particularly losing his wife

after a burgers and conversation , Ronnie took my 10 year old into our pool room for some 8 ball.
Ronnie seemed to really love the game,he tried trick shots etc and my son was in danger of winning the game, right as he started to shoot the 8 ball,Ronnie dropped his cue on the floor

My wife and kids laghed and figured that was what pool sharks did,June still talks fondly about Ronnie,Jersey Red, ,Verl Horn,Denny Glenn the collector,Their stories thrill her

I miss Ronnie,Red and the guys, funny but last week we went to a cafeteria for lunch and ran into Billy Incardone. We invited him to our table and he entertained us with thrilling stories about pool.gambling and the good old days.

Billy explained the inside story on gambling, making a line in sports betting, and rating all the players, great players from Ed Kelly and Ronnie to Freezer,Gabe, wimpy, all the way to Efren Reyes

When June said howmuch she enjoyed talking to Billy and how much more exciting the old
style players were to here,i could swear I saw moisture in Billy's eyes

This is one of the most enjoyable posts I've ever read here. On a lot of levels... Thanks Dean. Ronnie Allen is one of the few superstars from the 60s and 70s I never had a chance to see play. I wish I had. I don't care for one pocket but I can watch his ( few ) matches on youtube over and over again. If you can black out the yapping ( I actually just turn the sound off after watching the first time ) and just watch what he does on a pool table, you'll never cease to be amazed. He was something else.

I did have the chance to see Billy I. play and I'm glad I did. What a great player with a TON of heart.

I think ole Ronnie even had Cliff beat on the almighty Bite...Even got me one time after a staked my buddy & we made a big score arm wrestling & I usually don't get bit...I can still remember that look as he locked eyes with me & beelined toward me..I think I was digging money out before he started his pitch..lol..A truly colorful character for sure

Squirrel and Ronnie Allen

It was around 1963, I think.
A crew of players came through Atlanta on the way to Macon for the big snooker tournament.
Pool room was upstairs on Marietta Street in a place that later became the Nitery Club (a strip joint). Somebody put on a tournament and there was plenty of action all over the place.
Bill Staton was there, Puckett, Joey Spades, Ronnie Allen. Marshall (Squirrel) Carpenter, Junior Goff, Danny Jones, Joe Cosgrove, Don Watson, Billy Johnson...gambling like crazy.
I watched little Squirrel give Ronnie Allen 9-6 (Squirrel got the breaks) and beat Ronnie thoroughly. Squirrel was red hot at that time and had done well up in Johnston City, as well as I recall.
My memory isn't what it was, but I do remember Marshall beating Ronnie because I was railbirding on Ronnie, thinking the Squirrel had no chance at giving up that spot. And I lost pretty heavy.
That Squirrel was a helluva player back then. I mentioned this to Ronnie at one of Grady's things there at the last and he remembered it...he said the match started out with Squirrel giving 8-5 and that didn't go good for Marshall so they adjusted to 9-6 and that was the bad bet.

Maybe it was the railbirds who had no chance.:grin-devilish:

Ronnie & Keith partners

My favorite video i remember is Ronnie and Keith playing doubles one pocket and it was the most entertaining thing i have ever seen. Not only the amount of talking but the ability of Ronnie and Keith to play at that level was incredible. I don't remember their opponents but i got the VHS tape from JJ.

Dude post more you always have good stuff;)

Kinda' looked that way, didn't it.
Live and learn, I guess.
Here's a related RA story from the 1980s....

At one of the Tahoe tournaments Ronnie was giving Bucktooth a very strange spot at one pocket. Ronnie went to 2 balls and Bucktooth went to one. The report I heard didn't mention which one of them came out ahead, but the railbirds were reported to have lost $30,000.

The games with Squirrel were on the square. His games with Bucktooth in Vegas and Tahoe were all questionable.
