I use 2000 grit on my cue almost every other day, or when it "feels" sticky. If I could get 4000 grit I would. Like burnishing paper. Pretty much polishing the shaft. It doesn't really reduce the size of the shaft, and even if it does, it's VERY gradual. I think it's great. Extremely slick. Efren likes it. Good enough for me. Is there any "negative"?

Any sanding is removing material....which will lead to thinning of the shaft.

It is gradual, but certain.

If it doesn't bother you then it is fine for me.

I used to do the same to my cue for years ,now its to where i dont want it any thinner,so i got a friend to put a fine finish on it,now i just wipe it with a clean damp towel every now and then!
 
Use a damp paper towel and a hand towel to dry ... NO sand paper micro sheets...
 
Ditto with what Black-Ball said.

I use SIL Kleen to clean my cue shafts then apply CUE SILK. Makes it feel just like if you'd used 2000 grit, w/o removing wood from sanding. Find a buddy the might have some and give it a try. It's somewhat expensive but worth every penny! And NO,... I"m not a spokes person, or sell the stuff, just a satisified user :grin-square:
 
Check just past the ferrule to see if it is getting worn down. Sanding by hand tends to wear it there more than any other place. You can put a stratightedge along the shaft to see any gaps.

Try 50/50 solution of denatured alcohol and water.

It works great of granite counter tops.

It should work great on your graphite shaft. :thumbup:
 
I've had my 314-2 for about 2 years & in that time it has went from 12.75mm to 11.95 mm. from sanding.
I use 2000grit & 800grit if needed.
 
Removing any wood will leave an hourglass shape in the area sanded (check with straight edge). Micromesh sanding and finishing products go to 12,000 grit. Best is to wipe with slightly damp cloth or paper towel. If this raises the grain a little, burnish (not sand) before playing again, as this will leave some natural oils in the wood and your need to do this will diminish with time. Try not to remove wood unless absolutely necessary.

I've always used Mr.Clean Magic Eraser and then I will burnish with a piece
of old leather.Works like a charm for me!
 
2000 does remove wood from the shaft. It also puts a very nice sheen or reflective surface to the wood. If you look down the shaft it is almost mirror like smooth.

I clean my shafts about once a month or more if I play more. I use 2000 grit sand paper I buy from an auto parts place. Maybe $1.00 a sheet of 8½ x 11 inch. I cut it up into 8 pieces that will last for months.
 
In my eariler years, I used to burnish my shaft consistantly. So much that it made that "hour glass" shape that was descibed in an eariler post.

New solution- babypower pinch a little between your index, thumb and middle finger then rub. Problem solved. No sanding of shaft.
