SBE 10 Ball Call-Shot Rules: Clarified & Strategies Involved

EZ Money and I are going to play these rules today. I wanted to make sure I had the rules correct and to also ask how people believe it changes your strategy from regular 10 ball rules.

As I understand the rule changes - and please modify/correct/add:

- you must call your ball and pocket, or call safe, or push
- if you miss a called shot, your opponent has the option to give the resulting shot back

Is that it on the rules changes?

The first strategy change that I see, is the "2-way" shot goes the way of the dodo bird. How might you alter your playing strategy over conventional 10 ball?

I ran a tourney like this on big diamond tables, let's just say people loved it for the most part.

Yes Indeed......

Exactly the point Ginky made when we were both out there smoking during one of his matches on Friday I think it was. The two-way shots where sometimes we try maybe to make a carom and if we make it we have a shot but if we miss our opponent is safe.........these shots go away with these rules and CREATIVITY is taken out of it. But it does take luck out of the game for sure.

I play a lot of 2-ways. But with these rules negating that play, I'd think I'd have to alter my strategy when deciding what to do on a difficult shot or table:

1) play more safes

2) If I normally shoot a shot I deem @ 75% makeable but possibly "sell-out-able", I think I lower that # just a bit, maybe to 65%

Strategy comments ya'll?

Another rule applies to making the ten on the break. If the ten goes in either pocker at the rack end it get spotted any other pocket is a win.

Koolkat doesn't like the SBE 10 Ball rules

This was our first attempt at the SBE rules. I personally loved the rule. It makes the player commit to what he trying to do. You're not going to get bailed out with a lucky roll or "2 way". It does call on your safety game more.
Maybe the reason Koolkat didn't like this rule was he got SKUNKED.

Or maybe it's because call shot rules in rotation games suck. Call shot rewards safety play. If you want more safes and fewer runouts, play call shot. Otherwise, play real rules.

I agree that with the SBE rules I would tend to play a little more conservatively utilizing the safety game more (I probably should anyway).:grin-square:

I suppose I would change my view of the two way shot from the traditional shot/safety to shot/push-out to fit these rules.

The way it should be played.

Boring game for me

He got me 5-0 for a whole fin with these constricting rules. And immediately comes arunnin to AZ and promote his short lived glory. If I did that everytime I smoked his butt, I'd get banned for starting too many threads! ;)

Seriously tho, it's all good, we have a healthy rivalry and kudos to Rick for his very strong play yesterday.

I didn't take well to the rules on my first go. I felt hamstrung and couldn't let the stroke go. It's good if you like a LOT of safety play - so for developing your safety game, it's a good exercise. But, I don't know if I'd ever like these rules over TX Express. It's less exciting and less creative at the expense of less luck. BOOORRRIIINNNNGGGG for me, but that's just me. I now realize how much my 2-way play contributes to my game's success.

I can fade the rolls better than most people. Give some people a couple bad rolls and their game often goes south. :p

If that's boring Matt, you must hate 1-pocket. Maybe it's time I relieve you of your king status.

Yeah...BUT

I played in a local tourny last night....got shit out on in both losses. One of the guys shit out 3 times in a race to 5. I'd rather a guy run 7 racks on me, rather than get lucky to win.

It's just tooo lucky.

Please tell everyone I said hello!

Btw, here's a link to the official WPA 10-ball rules, which I believe were the ones used at the SBE. http://www.wpa-pool.com/index.asp?content=rules_10ball

I read the WPA rules yesterday and the way I understood them the option to give it back to the other player occurs only when a called ball is pocketed illegally or another ball goes in. A simple miss or foul with no balls going down results in the incoming player taking the table as is with no option to turn it back to the other player (I'm referring to section 9.8 "Continuing play"). This would still present opportunities to play a 2-way shot (shot/safety) so long as no ball is pocketed.

I thought at the SBE this was not the case. The incoming player could give it back on a simple miss or foul.

I'll pass along a hearty "YO" to your fans ponytail!

I can understand where you're coming from on this. When there's a disparity in skill level between two opponents, the lesser caliber guy would benefit from TX Express rules vs call-ball. I'd think spots would need to be increased in all fairness. If I'm playing a short race with someone a ball or 2 below me, playing for the cheese - I'd elect call ball also. It's to my advantage. But, I have initially found the game less exciting :boring2:. Getting waxed by EZ Money yesterday did not add to my introduction to it either!

And TimKrazyMon speculated I'd probably hate one pocket. I do find it is an acquired taste that will take some more time to grow on me. I think call ball 10 ball is a bit of an aquired taste as well, and I admit to being slow to accept change!

That's how we played it yesterday and that's why I've been whining like a schoolgirl that the game takes away the 2-way creativity.
