Screen Names & Real Identity

The more I hang around forums like AZ, the more I realize the need for the screen names to have real names attached to them.

We all get a little excited from time to time and make statements that are sometimes painful or aggravating to others. By using a screen name with no real name related, we are able to hide behind that screen name, woof at people anonymously, even make false accusations and not be held accountable for our comments.

For some anonymous posters, the name calling, the threats, the woofing and the intimidation makes them feel a little taller, a little stronger and more than what they really are. But in reality it shows a weakness in our character as men and women. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind a little controversy an enjoy the woofing as much as the next guy, I just like people to be held accountable for their words and actions.

Screen names are COOL and I don't think they should go away, ever. The screen names are fun and personal and identify certain things about us.

I was thinking that it would be pretty neat to have like a CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY FOR SCREEN NAMES, you know where your screen name was related to the name on your drivers license or birth certificate. It would be a badge of courage so to speak, and those who were "certified" would be given a certain level of respect that is not given to other forum members. By being certified, you are then held to a different set of standards, unlike anyonymous posters.

I am sure many would prefer to remain anonymous regardless and that is fine but for hard-core members who value their words and deeds a certification of their real identity would speak volumes.

Does anyone think there is any merit to this hair-brained idea?

Who knows, maybe the AZ system administration has a way to add a certification of identity to the forum for those who would want one.

Whats your real name? I mean Joey may be your first name, however, whats the A an abbreviation for? or should I guess!!!!!:D :D

Have a good night!!!! Mr. Anonymous;) :D :D

Cowardly attacks from behind a keyboard and screen name have always amused me. Goes along with alot of people not wanting to take responsibility for anything anymore.

We-ellllll .........

First off let me say that I am fully in favor of Joey being certified . . . . :D

I have been "Hu" wherever I went for over thirty-five years, usually with no last name. This forum won't take a two letter member handle so I use my business name as a handle, sign as Hu, and say I am near New Orleans since most folks wouldn't have a clue if I named my little town.

I happen to know several people who have been cyber-stalked and stalked in real life because of information they put on the net. ID theft is another legitimate possibility. You won't see my full name, my address, or my other personal information many places on the net although this information is easily found and my full name is used to sign almost all PM's and e-mails.

Hu

It's Keller, Brian Keller. Just make sure to spell the first name correctly so it doesn't come out, Brain. :D

Brian in VA

ridewiththewind was my moniker when I was on my motorcycle mailing list, and joined AZ during that time frame. Unfortunately, for now, the ride is gone, but it'll be replaced with something a bit bigger next time. :D

Just got done with the D-I-V-O-R-C-E, so now, and for always, it is Lisa Thomas (last name was Adams).

Lisa

Brady......everyone please notice there is not an N in my name inbetween the A and the D. For some reason whenever I go somewhere and write my name down when they call it out they say Brandy. It is more annoying than anything. Good thing the TD's around here know my name or it could be quite embarrassing. Anyways looking forward to not having any conflicts on here with anybody. :)

I'll never post my real name here. I want to remain anonymous in this forum.

I've been using this SN for 10+ years probably. Same on on every forum I frequent (Quite a few) same I use in all transaction (Ebay , etc) and I will always keep it for continuitiy. Anyone can google it find all they need to know about my online activites and I like it that way.

However , I always sign my posts Jay. ;)

I actually prefer for people who care to know about me to gp ahead and do a little leg work on their own. :D

I would have to agree with the idea of having the real name somewhere on the Avitar. I first had an off screen name when I began AZ because I figured it was like any other free website such as hotmail where all the normal names are taken but as I began to get more involved I created a new tag with my real name. I want people to get to know me and I like the personal feeling of disscussing pool with other people who disclose their personal information.

I encourage all AZers to place their real name somewhere on the Avitar.
We are all friends here.

Sheesh!
Boy, that's what an ego will do for you. I just assumed that everyone in the world knew who JoeyA was. I've hung out on pool forums for years, played in so many pool tournaments and lost so much money gambling at pool, I thought of changing my last name to Whale. The A is for Aguzin pronounced similarly to the month of August but with a ZIN instead of a ST.

Google: Joey Aguzin Hamburger

And then you will know the rest of the story.

Thanks Joey, I am truly impressed, however, now I am also very very hungry!!!!!!:D

I actually spent a little time at Ft. Polk, back in the 1980's, and man it was not very much fun. Twenty three years active duty and I only made it to three places in the USA, Ft. Stewart, Ft. Polk, and Ft. Lewis. However, I do not regret my service, in fact I would never change a thing even if I could.

Thanks for the reply Joey!!!! and have a great night!!!!
