Send Mike Wong to the U.S. Open

This would be an interesting thread to use to separate the gamblers from the nits among the regular posters on here. I've seen at least one person whom I've seen talking big about "getting in the box" and other gambling jargon on other threads asking all kinds of questions and singing a completely different song. Staking a player is gambling, especially if he's performed well against some of the favorites, no? Or do people prefer a "lock"/"steal"?

I'm letting my ignorance shine here.

So where does Michael Wong fall - friend or foe?

And I was gonna donate until the 'God Bless' started showing up in the signature of Wong's posts. Like donating to a pool player is the Christian thing to do. Nice angle shooting there.

Finally, those that are saying it took guts for him to post here? Seriously - ok I'll show more guts. I need $17,000. That's 10 times what Wong is asking for. Call me a hero.

Come off it. He's put his bollocks in his begging bowl, so good luck to him.

Hi Vinny, I'm pretty sure you barked at me. So... I'm going to give you the game you asked for, just come to Steinway Billiards and you'll get played. Unless of course, you had a change of heart... just like what Danny Harriman said...?
By the way, there were few people that were very interested in the game and getting behind me, you might get yourself a decent bet sir!

Hi mike. Like I said already I have no reason to come to Steinway and play. But if you come to philly you will get played. The difference between me coming there or you coming here is simple. Your dead broke and have stake horses so you need my money, I don't need your money and I'm not broke so I actually don't need to play pool to survive which means I don't need to travel to you to play. So if you and your stake horses like the game them come to philly and you will get played. As for Danny Harriman. He posted on a thread something and I told him I would play him some, and 6 months later he calls me wanting to play. So after six months abviously after six months I got a line on him so it would have been stupid of me to play him even, besides the fact he is dead broke too. So I told him I would play if the game was right. The bottom line is this. All you clowns that say you gamble but you all need a stake horse and talk like your some big time gamblers but your betting other people's money. I bet all my own money all the time and I gamble everyone that comes to philly. I'm just not a fool. I guess if I was using someone else's money like all you guys do I would go plY Shane some even. Lol what would I care it ain't my money. So the moral of the story is. Come to philly and you or Danny will get played at both of the games I offered

He did gamble with me at the dcc last year .
I believe I have him 10 7.

Yes I took the worst of it and played you 10-7 $300 a game and lost 4 games. I also played darren Appelton here in philly $300 a game getting 10-6 and I lost 10 games the first day and 6 games the second day and 6 games the third day. So I guess I'm all talk and I don't gamble.

Hahaha that was pretty good scttybee, especially the part were you pointed out he had stake horses to put him in a big money game but none of them will put him in the U.S. Open. Real classy guy huh. Sounds like just the guy someone should invest in. 👍🏼👍🏼

From what he says is he don't need gambling money he has people for that. He needs people to throw away there money on hotels and gas, and travel expenses Oh and entry fee money to a tournament he is like 5% favorite to even cash. Well I guess that says a lot about how the guys at Steinway stick by there guy. Just saying

Scotty, big difference. Getting staked in a tournament where he can do ok vs getting staked playing a guy he will probably beat with home table advantage is pretty different. I'm not even friends with Mike Wong but I would bet on him (no offense Vinny)

No offense taken. There will probably be a lot of people in my home pool room that would bet on mike. He is the favorite for sure, I'm just trying to help him out so he don't have to beg people to put him in a tournament. I just ain't going to ny to play. But he is a much better player than me I just wanna gamble with him.

Congratulations!

The negative attitudes of the several of the posters in this thread convinced me to sponsor Mike Wong in the US Open. I think Mike Wong is a deserving player. Is he a world beater? Nope. Can he play a little bit- you bet!

He has a good heart, is disciplined, and will give his best shot. Unlike others who have come before to AZ Billiards for ‘help’, Mike will show up for his matches; on time, ready to play. He will be straight and sober. And he will give the game respect and some of the credit it is due.

Some of the posters in this thread should really do a reality check. Where did all this negativity come from? Did your Mom mistreat you as a kid? I mean what the hell causes so much ‘hate’ – not just in pool – but in all phases of life. It is very frustrating and disheartening. This thread has shown what is becoming a terrible pattern on AZ Billiard forums.

Mike Wong came on the forums to ask for assistance to go the US Open. He did not ask to be beat up. It is difficult to ask for help – it is a humbling experience. But instead he was shown disrespect – as was the game. This thread (like so many do) twisted and turned into a woofing contest.

Let’s just say Congratulations to Mike Wong. He is going to the US Open! And I hope he does well. I am sure there are those who will wish ill will to him. But not me!

By the way, this is not the first time I have taken this type of position. Anybody remember Mike Dechaine and the Steinway Classic? Mike D was getting a hard time from several of the ‘top’ players – who seemed to have an attitude towards him (possibly because he didn’t join in Bonus Ball). I thought it was appropriate to help ‘prop’ him up – to let him know that some of us supported him (and pool in general). Bullying has no place in our wonderful game.

I appreciate scttybee and his posts. He seems to have a better compass than many in this thread. JAM and Blackjack had some good thoughts too. This thread is the very reason why I don’t post much anymore. But everyone in a while I guess I feel a little philanthropic. I love this game and will do what I can to keep it on the ‘high ground’.

I think that Mike Wong is a credit to the game. He is educated, honest, and hard working. He is a gentleman. (Did you know he has a Master’s degree?) I have only met him twice over the last 5 years or so. This was not done out of any close friendship. It was done because I think this is the right thing to do. Actions speak louder than words – and I hope some of the negative people learn to be a little more understanding and show some compassion and insight. You know – if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all?

You should post more often.

Pool needs people like you.

(A MASTER'S degree, you say?) Awesome!

If I remember correctly, I have seen Mike several times at DCC over the years. And each time I've seen him he was running to find an open table to practice. The first time I seen him he "appeared" to be learning the game and working on fundamentals. This was 5-6 years ago and maybe longer. And he looked like a teenager then too!

But he was always looking for an empty table to play on even if by himself. I give the kid props for continuing to work and learn to become a better player.

Kudos to Mark Griffin for stepping up and taking a chance. It's a win-win for both parties whether they make a dime or not.

Lots of positive takeaways here and it's apparent from this thread Mike has a good attitude. Through it all he kept he classy!! Stay golden ponyboy...

Thanks Mark and best of rolls to you Mike.

Mr. Griffin - you a true credit to the sport.

What hit me close was when Mike openly and honestly stated that in order to pursue the game he sacrificed much in life including relationships, careers, and money.

That is so very true for so many professionals in this sport and that is why I admire them. For they have the courage to do what I do not, and that is invest all of their being into playing the game at the highest level--giving it all up for that goal, with absolutely nothing guaranteed on the back end. They have earned my respect.

Like you said, supporting Mike was just the right thing to do.

Excellent post and thank you very much for doing what you did.

I already know you are going to take this with a certain tone.
Nothing i do can change that, even though the tone you are defaulting to is probably wrong. but that's ok. I know my words are interpreted harsher then the average joe.

Some counter perspective.

Kudos to you for stepping up by the way.
But for the record. To some, this forum is a community. Whether people agree, or disagree, they at least come together on here and participate on the main forum.
Last time Mike posted was over a year ago, then recently he posted in something about cue extensions, and then came on the forums asking for money.
You really shouldn't criticize people for questioning who he is, what his ethics might be, and how much integrity he has as a person when the majority of the people on here have no clue who he is or have never met him.
He's spent 95% of his AZ career in for sale items, cue and case gallery, or ask the cuemaker.
People are most certainly allowed to scrutinize someone when they might be making an investment in that person, and trying to figure out if it is a sound business decision.
If some stranger were to walk into a regional event in Mike's neck of the woods, walked up to him, and asked to be staked for a hundred bucks so they could get into the tournament, I highly doubt if Mike would just fork over the money. Everyone on here knows Mike himself would be doing the EXACT same thing. Finding people who knew the guy, and getting a handle on who they were. Citing past actions as potential character evidence, from people with positive and negative things to say that come from their own personal experiences with him or what they've personally seen. Sorry, but that's the reality of life. The world ain't all rainbows and unicorns.

So when people bring up instances of him and potential questionable behavior and what that behavior might entail, that's giving the potential investors feedback.
And why not?!
I think we've all seen our fair share of people who could care less about this forum and the community within, who treat it like a bunch of suckers who are their personal ATM. What is wrong with people questioning things, erring on the side of caution and being careful with their money?

And you are dead wrong about people asking for help.
Pool players ask for help ALL THE TIME. Maybe not on the forums, but broke pool players have been getting adopted by total suckers, since forever.
Heck, even Mike has backers ready to go for the right game that he can't afford, or doesn't want to risk his own money. That's help, right?
Believe me it's easy to ask for help, especially when actually getting that help means having a total freeroll.
I'm actually surprised more people don't try it more often on here.

But again. Kudos to you for stepping up and putting an end to the diatribe.

Hopefully, it turns out to be a sound investment.

Thank you Mark Griffin and CSI for choosing to sponsor my entry into the U.S. Open. I must admit I was a little shocked to have received a phone call from Mr. Griffin, nevertheless I was pleasantly surprised. I will do my best to perform well in this tournament and represent CSI to the best of my abilities.

Thank You,

Mike Wong

Mike song to US open

Superstar,

This is a sound investment - In the future of pool. It is not being looked at as a financial investment. As to your other comments - I'm no longer interested in debating anything with anybody on a public forum.

This thread again showed the angry tone that is prevalent these days. Unfortunate but true. So I made a deal with myself. I will do what I feel is proper. But don't necessarily expect any explanations on the forums.

However, as always if someone cares to have an intelligent chat They can call me. 702/835-2000. I'm in Las Vegas so no early morning calls, please. Not sure why I said that. In all the years of posting my cell, I've only received 2-3 calls. Lol
