OK, I admit that playing in the heat and humidity I do, I'd probably be better off with a glove. I know a few good players that play just fine with gloves on. However, I also note that they are taking off the glove every little bit and pouring a gallon of water out of it.(OK, probably not much over three and a half quarts but I am sometimes prone to exaggeration.)

This leads me to the ask about the tube thing that slides over the shaft. It seems to serve the same purpose as a glove yet my hand would stay much dryer. Anybody tried one? Anything to say about brands or where to buy if they do work? Seems like I have seen one for two dollars and one for ten but I don't remember where I saw either.

I play in alot of local tournaments that take place in icehouse bars that have the doors open all day. When chalk can no longer keep my hands dry, I just use a piece of a paper towel losely wrapped around my shaft using a closed bridge. That usually does the trick and as a bonus when the paper towel gets moist, you just tear a new piece and it does not cost a thing to use paper towels.

That's exactly what a player used to do in the pool hall where I learned to play. The other players laughed at him behind his back, but it looked effective. That was before gloves were available. The only problem I see with it is if there is some paper sticking out forward of your hand, it might tend to take chalk off the tip on the backstroke.

Related to which....

There are several products on the market that replace or supplement the normal hand bridge. One of them looks like a ring with a half-pipe attached. The idea is that the stick sits on the half-pipe and slides smoothly.

A local player used to spot that he would use the mechanical bridge on every shot. The trick was that for normal shots, he would hold the bridge head in his left hand with his index finger looped over the stick, which made a very effective bridge.

There was a young lady in Austin (Round Rock, maybe) that used to do that. Looked like it worked just fine. Must be a Texas thang!

I have found that Finger Slides work great as a glove alternative. just google the term. AZBer Nancy Cotes Makes them.

Well if you are like myself you might just have bought a glove or two that you still have and won't wear, if so you can cut off one of the fingers and lop the end off and try that. Sounds kinda tubular;).

I believe Joe Tucker uses one of these. Contact Joe Tucker & he'll give you the info, so you can have one.

As far as gloves go, I'd rather not use one. However, as much as I poo-pooed the idea, I have to say that I was lacking the experience of using one. After having used one for the last 4 years in the heat & humidity in Oklahoma & Texas..., I wouldn't play without one. I can only imagine what playing in Alabama, Louisiana & Mississippi must be like ....

I use a glove also. I carry several of them in my case. One gets a little too damp for my liking, I put on a fresh one while letting the damp one dry out. I may rotate through three or four gloves if I play into the early morning hours.

Maniac (gloves are cheap)

Hu, there was an old fella that played at our hall whos daughter knitted him one. He used to give the saft a wipe, up and down before every shot and
it seemed to work good for him.

old thread

This is a thread from 2007. Since then I tried a glove, "lost it". Can't remember if I gave it away, threw it away, or it disappeared. Didn't like the feel of the glove and didn't like that my fingertips seemed insecure on the table wearing a glove.

Tried the finger slides, liked them much better than a glove. Stuck them in a small pill bottle and gave them a permanent place in my case for desperate times.

Never did try the sock, think they disappeared.

I'm back where I started, I prefer to play naked preferably with a young lady doing the same!
