Shane vs. Corey challenge match unofficial TPA's

I just watched the big race to 100 challenge match between Shane Van Boening and Corey Deuel and kept track of the TPA's using the score sheets and rules at the Accu-Stat website. Not official, but I thought someonw might like to look at it all the same. Since misses can be scored as two errors if it is blatant, I used my own judgement on these which is why the TPA's might not be entirely correct. I would post the score sheets, but the forum won't allow me to upload my scans because they are too large.

Here are the totals:

Shane:
Number of breaks: 100
Break and runs: 29
Longest strings: 5, 4, 3
Dry breaks: 12
Balls pocketed (on break): 178
Most consecutive wins: 14

Kicks attempted: 41
Kicks pocketed: 7
Safeties attempted: 86

Balls pocketed: 956
Misses (2 point deductions, 1 point deductions): 6,30
Scratches on the break: 7
Bad Kicks: 11
Bad Safeties: 15
Bad Position: 23
TPA: .907

Corey:
Number of breaks: 69
Break and runs: 17
Longest strings: 3 (x3)
Dry breaks: 17
Balls pocketed (on break): 73
Most consecutive wins: 5 (x3)

Kicks attempted: 68
Kicks pocketed: 13
Safeties attempted: 50

Balls pocketed: 704
Misses (2 point deductions, 1 point deductions): 9, 38
Scratches on the break: 9
Bad Kicks: 15
Bad Safeties: 10
Bad Position: 18
TPA: .867

Man, That is really interesting to see and thank you very much for posting this informtation. I really enjoy reading it and I will surely give you a rep for it; but you have got to be one bored ass dude!! I feel graced by the fact that you have that much time on your hands.

Thanks again, good reading.

Wow, nice job. Wanted to do that myself but just couldn't get there. Thanks.
Don't want ya to go back and do it but I would like to know the percentage not numbers of balls made on the break if you have it.

That's an incredible standard for them to keep up over a 14 hour period. Man I suck.

Thanks for doing this for us stats junkies. Most interesting to me is that Shane only came up dry on the break 12% of the time... Pretty amazing for 10-ball!
:p

If you want to upload these and you scanned your sheets.. change your scanning options from 24 bit color (usually the default) to 2 bit (black and white). If the size is too big to post, I'm betting you scanned them using color. Just that will decrease the size by at least a factor of 10. Then do a "save as" to a JPG or GIF format to further lower the size. You will probably go from a 10mb file to something like 20k.

Yeah, Shane making at least one ball on the break 88 out of 100 times is amazing.

Unofficial TPA's

Thanks for the information. I was hoping somebody would do this. One Rep for you!

Towards the end of the match one of the main things that Bill and Grady emphasized was that the break was a real difference in this match. Shane was just pounding the break and controlling the white ball while Corey was stubbornly sticking to his patented soft break which just wasn't productive enough. This difference meant that Shane was basically playing 8-ball (rotation that is) while Corey was playing 9-ball; a huge difference in how a rack plays out.

Positive rep to you, thanks. I was surprised that the numbers were actually this close since the final score was so lop sided. It kind of shows the fine line between winning and losing at that level. We often make such a big deal out of the outcome and sometimes lose sight of how awesome all of the pro players really are at their craft.

Thanks Again

Thanks for the help. My problem was that these settings were not accessible in the preview program I was using; I had to configure the scanning software before using it:confused:. Rep for you for the help.

So anyways, here are the scans. I will have to do 3 posts as the limit on uploads is 5 files per post.

Fantastic job. It was obvious to me that Corey was inevitably going to lose this match because he refused to change his break, and when he finally talked himself into breaking harder he subconsciously believed he was making a mistake, cosequently hitting the 1 ball poorly, often resulting in a scratch. A lesson to be learned, when you decide to make a change,do it with your heart and let it go. Thanks, great post.

Great work.

I can't believe SVB missed 36 times. I watched the whole match live, and would have bet he didn't miss more than 10 or 15 times, he was playing that well. Funny how one sees things.

Corey on the other hand, I thought although his break wasn't as good as SVB, he had a LOT of position mistakes AFTER he got control of a rack. He would get stuck behind a ball on an open table. And he seemed to miss a lot more routine shots. I thought that cost him more than his soft break.
