Shane's Not The King Of The 10-Ball (Tourney) Hill Anymore?

Chris, are the Pinoy's you are talking about, playing over here now or are they some that have not crossed the pond.

I agree they are short races, but yet there are players who have been extremely consistent in their tournament performance for longer periods. Anyone can win at that level, but you just don't see that happening. Sure, there are more than a handful of players who are capable of winning anyone, but their chances of winning top 5 player are typically more like 10-20%. Which in turn means that their chances of winning a major tournament are pretty much non-existent.

All in all, I do agree that no one player is guaranteed to win a tournament with races to say 9, but the greatest players should nevertheless be winning tournaments in consistent basis. Like several players have been doing.

Shane has won more tournaments than Bustamante, Alex or Dennis in the last four years. So by your thinking does that make them not as good as Shane ? If it does then that proves your logic is seriously flawed.

All four of them would gladly play the top tournament players you are talking about races to 21 for $5000-$10,000 from now until the end of time. Its apples and oranges. Who you think is the better player depends on what format you think determines the better player.

The euros have focused on tournaments and the nuances inherent to them more than the pinoys or Americans because in large part there is no gambling where they are from. Here and in the PI players can make as much or more gambling if they are in the right situation than in tournaments so the focus is split. Some would say a strong gambler can win any tournament he enters but a strong tournament player is going to end up busted when he gets in the grease with the big boys.

I have an idea how much Shane has won in the last four years or so gambling. If you add that number to the posted tournament winnings its not even close who is the better player money wise.

Just watch the stream from Star Billiard Center in Manila. I follow pool all over the world to be in the know for gambling on matches and and I see guys at Star I've never seen or heard of running 10-ball out like water. Johnnyt

The reason Shane beat Mika is not just the break, he out shot him, play much better safeties, and kicked a hell of alot better.
Mika showed how weak he is mentally in a long race when things don't go his way.
Tournaments are short races, at that level you can go years and not win a tournament. In a race to 7, 9 or even 11 anyone can win at that level.
Shane is definitely the best american 10 ball player and there a a couple pinoy's in his class , but again any of those few guys could either lose to or beat Shane on any given day.

I agree with this very much, its hard to keep on winning when the races are fairly short, and some of the competion is very close to even, like at golf or car racing not very often you see the same guys winning over and over, the competion is just to close for a run away winner.

I agree with what you're saying, but I think it's kind of funny that the two examples you used to prove your point are both sports that have been dominated by one guy the last 7-10 years (Jimmy Johnson and Tiger Woods). Just poking at you a little :)

To add to what Justin was saying, I really don't think Shane ever was the king of 10 ball as far as tournaments are concerned. He won the predator 10 ball in 2007 and a few smaller tourneys, but it is not as if he's been dominant and winning everything. He is competitive in every tournament but no one really dominates except for the two year run Mika had. It's not like Shane has dropped off the map. He just won the derby one pocket and came second in the 9 ball.

I think it is harder for him to win now that more people have emulated his break. He still does it better than anyone, but he is not the new kid chopping through the competition. He is established and is the one people are gunning for. As far as gambling goes, he is still in the top group of guys who can take it down.

Shane got to where he is today with that Cuetec...so give Cuetec a little bit of credit for his successes.

All of the credit goes to Shane for being able to manage to still do what he does with a Cuetech. Shane deserves a load of credit for actually still managing to be competitive with that cue. The cue gets no credit, Shane gets it all and if anything gets more credit because of the cue he has to play with to get the cash.

Everybody's body computer is designed different..Appleton said awhile back that he wont do the races to 100 no more cuz it messes with him...some are grinders & some are not...the best of the best know how they are geared & play/gamble accordingly..The ones that don't know their own limitations usually pay out because of it

You can't blame Cuetec if Shane's cue is holding him back. If Shane thinks he can play better with a different cue, then it's incumbent upon him to do so.

Until then, he should be grateful for Cuetec's support which has helped his career. Given how difficult it is to make a living playing pool, I'm sure that many other aspiring players would be delighted to have Cuetec's support.

When's Shane's Ten Ball break is working, he's very hard to beat. Sometimes it just isn't working as well, like this past week in Norfolk. He is still very competitive with the best players, but he is much more vulnerable without his monster break clicking. In most major tournaments there are usually only about a dozen players who have a legitimate chance to win. Everyone else is playing to finish high. It's no accident we keep seeing the same guys in the winner's circle. Let's just say they have the "right stuff", without going into all the reasons why they can win, and someone else who plays good cannot.

Earl would disagree:)

Ok- Call me a numbers geek but I added up Shane's and Mika's reported
tournament winnings on AZB spanning 4 years from 2007 to 2010.

Shane:

2010 Winnings: $76,391
2009 Winnings: $90,975
2008 Winnings: $147,420
2007 Winnings: $116,307
-------------------------------
Total. $431,093

Mika:

2010 Winnings: $92,068
2009 Winnings: $238,320
2008 Winnings: $149,582
2007 Winnings: $59,636
-------------------------------
Total $539,606

So after 4 years of tourney play Mika has made $108,513 more than Shane. Safe to say Shane has made more than that gambling, including the 10K he took off MIka. I dont think Shane has anything to worry about.

To Justin's point, if one looks further back in time, I'd say that Mika has been the better player money-wise as he's been around longer.

Shane:
2006 Winnings: $16,187
2005 Winnings: $6,800

Mika:
2006 Winnings: $158,450
2005 Winnings: $83,642
2004 Winnings: $44,604
2003 Winnings: $44,418
2002 Winnings: $59,475
2001 Winnings: $99,919
2000 Winnings: $69,693

That's because Mika is 11 years older!
Sorry - I don't see your point.
Shane wasnt really on the map back then so how can you compare?

Well, one point that can be made is that drawing conclusions based upon time intervals very much depends upon the time intervals used.

As an example, according to AZB, Shane's 2011 money winnings are $42,500 vs. Mika's $7450. So in reference to the title of this thread, even if Shane isn't King of the Hill in 10-ball as often anymore, he's still having a fantastic year money-wise.
