Should I teach kids?

My son and a few of his friends (real beginners) are really interested in pool and watch the matches I have DVR. Every so often they ask me to help/show them how to play but I don't want to screw them up.

I am a average, maybe a little above average player I can run out when the opportunity is there. So my problem is I want to help them but I have no idea what I am doing in the teaching department. But I can give advice on bridges, basic aiming and position. Like hit the ball low to make it stop hit it high to go forward, think about the next shot.

If I help them it may give them a start but may also create bad habits if they want to get more into it. They are not looking at this point to spend money on lessons from a real instructor and also the people who I know who coul;d give them lessons maybe a little over their heads.

So what do you guys think?

Absolutely Mark.

Think of it this way...if you screw their stroke up so bad that the will never ever think about going pro...what is the worst thing that could happen...they go to college and get a degree?!

Seriously, teach them fundamentals and more fundamentals and just have fun. That's what life is all about anyway.

Sent you a PM.

absolutely

I think you should definetely introduce them to pool. I've been playing since I was 13 or so. My neighbor's dad had a nice table, a meucci, a huebler, and an adams. He taught us the basics. We played mainly straight pool, 8 ball, and 9 ball. My love for pool gradually outgrew the neighborhood and I started playing a pool halls, eventually becoming better than either my neighbor or his dad. To this day though, I fondly recall memories of playing in my childhood and it was those times that fostered my lifelong love of pool. I'm just an average recreational player who enjoys tournaments and leagues but pool has been a mainstay hobby of mine ever since I started.

I think you should teach your son and his friends who are interested in learning. Never make it seem like a chore and always let them enjoy themselves but be available to teach by example and when asked. They will remember it forever.

You should always help when asked. I am sure most everyone has someone in their early beginnings of playing pool, that helped them in a "large way" or maybe it was offering bits of sage advice (practice, practice or use the KISS method).

Always be courteous unless the situation dictates some other response. Keep it fun too.

Absolutely Mark. Dads teach their kids to fish altho they might not be pro fishermen. Same with baseball, they teach the kids to throw, catch and hit a ball. No big deal, teach them what you know, they will be better off for it
any way you look at it.

Better than letting them just swing at the balls and have bad fundementals sink in.

Even if a kid is taught incorrect fundamentals they're still going to have fun and learn something. Fundamentals only really matter for getting to a high level, most kids just want to get good enough to beat their friends. Can't see a downside to that.

I can help you teach them something correct.........

Hi there,

I understand your position and I am willing to help you teach these kids.

First i will teach you and then you can pass it on to them. I teach what is called Perfect aim and it involves getting the eye in that perfect position so anyone from beginner to pro can see every shot as well as physically possible.

This in turn will help with the stroke also because with the eyes in the right position you can really see and work on having the stroke straight.

Just give me a call and I will work with you for free. Your willingness to help others has sparked my willingness to help you.

Just call me anytime. The best time is after 8:00 at night. Be by a table and I can run you through the Perfect Aim process.

You won't believe what this will do for your game but seeing is believing.

Looking forward to working with you. 715-563-8712

Geno........ Perfect Aim is one habit you will love...

I guarantee it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't stress this enough. Abso-freakin'-lutely! Start 'em out with the basics such as stance, bridge, grip, and enjoy the time you spend with your son and his buddies. You can cash in the Karma points at a later date. :)

Pool/CueSports are a great way in which you can show kids many things about life and schoolwork. From history to physics, and even some basic trig. You can teach them self reliance, honor, dedication, and this list could fill a thread...

The sky is the limit when teaching kids through activity. It is the best thing we can do to help our sport! If you get enough kids going you can qualify for my give away.

Let me know when you get 5 children under the age of 16 enrolled, and you are in...Every cue I sell I give a cue to a child in one of the schools enrolled. Sky is the limit. I personally make 0 dollars for doing this. I am spending money in fact...Me, and whoever buys the cue's...Cue's for kids!

Just getting them to stroke the ball instead of poking it as they are inclined to do will cut the learning curve by a huge amount.

With out a doubt!
Show them what you know.
As a parent we already do that.
You don't need to be a pro to teach the love of the game.
I like the way ther other poster put it - just like teaching them baseball, basketball, football, etc...

The only down side, if you want to call it that, is that they will probably be beating you before you know it :D

Personally, I look forward to the day my son or daughter can beat me.
