Sigel goes 102 and out unFINNished...

To the person that said that mika is becoming the next earl strickland.... you sir are so very right.

Mika is just a bit testy-nowhere near Earl. And he isnt becoming anything. He has been the same the last 10 years (minimum).

You might look at Mika not calling the ref. a catch 22. If he does he's sharking. But not doing so could turn out to make him a cry baby. But I feel by not shaking hands after the match makes him a jerk. Bottom line all of these decisions where made by Mika. ;)

Personally I don't think its a catch 22. If the shot in question needed a ref I'm sure Mike would have called one. If the tables were turned and Mike didn't call a ref I would think the same thing if. Honesty in pool is rare, that's why there are referee's... use them!

Why would he shake a guys hand that he feels cheated him? Be realistic. He's not obligated to do anything besides stay Finnish and die!

Mike would never call a ref over to look at his own shot.

... the shot was questionable...
Was this a TV-table match? Is there a recording?

I see two problems with this kind of situation. The first is that there should be a referee on each table, full-time. That is a failing of the tournament organization. The second is that the players for the most part don't know the current rules. Sigel has played in World Championships in which hitting the cue ball twice on a stroke was not a foul -- perhaps he isn't familiar with the recent changes which now forbid that shot.

This tournament is all ball fouls and the players themselves must be honest to call fouls. Gerda touched a ball and called a foul on herself that no one else noticed. If Mike really didn't think it was a foul and it was close then Mika needed to call a ref. Mike could have been more diplomatic with Mika when asked about the foul and say he didn't think it was instead of the 800 year remark. IMHO

It was a TV match. It will be in the Accustats library soon. I didnt know that double hits were once legal. Now i know the reason why old school straight pool players see this shot differently than rotation players I think.

I agree with Bob. Based on what Jewett said, it's the tournament's fault - not Mike's. Mike prob felt 100% he was justified to continue, did, and ran out.

But what I do not understand is how not having a referee call the shot makes up for ignoring your own fault and just continuing?

It was at best controversial whether or not it was a foul. IMO it was not a foul, but even if you thought it was there was no ref to call it and Sigel intentionally shot the shot the way he did knowing full well how the cueball would behave. He shot down on the cueball (not straight through the cueball) and after contact the cueball went forward approximately six inches.

Sigel went on shooting just like he would after any normal shot, so I think it is very unlikely that he simply "ignored his own fault" as you say.

Mika did not say anything immediately after the shot, by the way. Mike had taken at least one more shot that I recall and maybe more before Mika started talking to him and saying it was a foul.

It sound to me like a few of you are basically telling me that it's poorer sportsmanship to complain than it is to cheat.

Anyway, regardless, I do agree that he should have called the ref.

Alledgedly cheat. Only a ref at the table would give us a conclusive call on this.

There wasn't one so it's pretty much a moot point.

I didn't see it as a foul either. It was a simple little pop shot. Also curious as to how much if any Mika even saw of the shot seeing as how he was sitting behind Mike on the shot. Maybe Mika was boiling over from his lousy shot that he missed after the 8th or 9th ball he made. I can somewhat understand there not being refs on every table, but why do they always seem to have to wait forever to find one and for one to come over. Also Danny's rambling about what Mike said supposedly to Mika is questionable too. Can he even hear what the co-announcer next to him is saying?!

I can't see Sigel continuing to shoot if he knowingly fouled. I would think he'd have a little more integrity than that.

That said, there should have been no need to call a ref because there should have been a ref right there on top of each shot. These are the World Championships for Christ's sake. They can't have a ref at each and every table.

Not the first time Mika has acted like a child. It's up to Mika to call for a ref. His mistake. Not shaking your opponents hand is classless.
Agreed, This is typical Mika. Anyone who beats him is my hero. JMO

Boy, the Western Europeans really do take everything personally. I just heard one of the commentators (an englishman it sounds like-I wasn't at the computer when the match started) state that Mike S was not wearing a vest in the stands and it was mandatory. So he said that he thought Mike must feel priviliged since he beat Mika yesterday. LOL --

For all their talk about peace, it's no wonder all the world wars get started by those guys!

I like both players and am not trying to defend either but will point out a couple things. When shooting, in your stance, on close call shots, its not always possible the shooter can tell for sure if its good or foul. That's why a ref should have been called. Now if Mike knew it was a foul, shame on him, and yes thats unsportsmanlike in my book.

But... You don't combat bad sportsmanship with more bad sportsmanship. First, you take blame for not calling a ref over. Then, I would hope you get your head back in the game and ready to shoot again. Even if you don't get to. And after the match, pissed off or not you shake hands. And if you got screwed you make a mental note and come back stronger then ever next time.

?, no question!

Simple little pop shot? He did jack-up for the hit, probably 1/4" at most away from the ball, ball followed 4" to 5" forward, double hit! Mika was looking right at the entire shot from where he was sitting in the players chair. By the way, it was the ambient, overhead microphone, that picked-up Mike's words to Mika, about "we could still be talking about this in 800 years."
Talked to DiLiberto this morning, John Bender (the other commentator) even remarked about hearing the foul, "EVERYBODY" new it was a foul!
Again though, without the referee present looking at, and then calling the hit, NO FOUL!

It's great to see Mike Sigel playing well again and running 102 in that match. Also, playing in a World Tournament that he may very well win.
But really, why make excuses for his B.S.?
