sjm and Williebetmore ROCK!

There are a couple AZ'ers here in particular I'd like to give a shout out thank you to for generousity way the heck above and beyond the call of duty; sjm and Williebetmore.

First I'd like to say thanks to sjm for being the ultimate NYC host over the last year during my several visits there. I met sjm at DCC a couple years ago and at the time, it was great to finally meet who I still consider, hands down, to be the best author on AZ.

Whenever I've run into him again, he has been nothing but absolutely selfless and generous. Examples include introducing me to everyone he knows as a friend of his, including Jennifer Baretta, introducing the game of three cushion billiards, and even inviting me to tag along with him to a Mets game last summer.

Last week, we went to Sang Lee's in Queens with another friend of his, Jace, and after spending about 5 hours teaching Jace and I how to play better 3 cushion shots, before I knew it, sjm paid for the time! I guess free lessons really means free lessons! :D

It's not about the money thing though, it's about the time. I don't think I've quite met anyone as willing to help people with their game who enjoys doing it so much. Thanks again sjm!

I certainly don't know Williebetmore as well, but yesterday was quite a day and this deserves a big thank you as well. When Williebetmore mentioned on Facebook that he was playing Jeanette earlier this week in the famous Betmore Basement, I sent him a message saying I was going to see her at a demonstration event here in Chicago and if there was any clever message he might want me to give her, which he indeed gave me. lol However while I was traveling back from the east coast, I ran into some car trouble in PA and while waiting for a part at a garage, I mentioned to Williebetmore that I might not make it. I didn't see a message he sent until after I arrived to the event 45 minutes late that he had called Jeanette and that if I gave him my number, she would call me and save a couple seats for me at the event.

The event was a huge success and when I finally got a chance to say hello to Jeanette and George, indeed they were expecting me and their enthusiastic greetings certainly reflected the terrific respect they had for Williebetmore, and I have to admit, it was kind of fun to bask in the false sense of importance in front of my local hoodies. :D

Williebetmore, you da man! :)

In the swirl of everything AZ, there's a silver lining that deserves to be mentioned. There are some tremendous people here that do kind things for others on a regular basis, sjm and Williebetmore are only two of them and there certainly are others here on AZ that I won't mention, because I'm not sure I really like them anymore anyways. (Boradriver, JoeyA) :D

Thanks again guys and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again at what is going to be the best DCC yet!

T-man,
You are spot on about sjm; he is a great student of the game, and has always reached out to those with similar interest. The community of true students of the game is somewhat small; and I really don't know how we would ever meet without AZB.

One of the first WPBA tourneys held in Peoria was the occasion for an "AZB get-together". Several of us met, had dinner, then made a trip the next day to the local pool hall. Who did sjm bring along? Jennifer Barretta. Very cool for those of us lucky enough to attend. He has also been generous in helping me with my straight pool and 9-Ball.

I definitely hope to see you at DCC; it seems I'm always in a hurry when our paths cross. Of course this year may be similar; I'm serving as "gofer" for one of the pro players; my hours may be somewhat irregular.

T your post gives kudos to two of the most deserving people on AZB. It's great to have Boradriver and JoeyA honored so. Oh, wait you meant SJM and Williebetmore, my bad. :D :D :D

Sure those guys are really nice guys and they know everyone in the pool world but can they play pool?

Williebetmore is Efren's "doubles" partner is Efren Reyes and Jeanette's pal for years and spars with her on occasion (He's got Mark Wilson in his back pocket) and SJM tutors pool players that often include the elite of the pool world. Yeah, I guess they both can play. I'm not asking for a lot of weight...... just sayin'.

sjm and Williebetmore do rock. have to say it.

it's also kind of interesting to note that when I was younger(well when I first joined the forum a number of years ago) and way too foolish I suspected SJM of being Steve Mizerak.

After all, his initials are the same. I have to admit I was quite dissapointed to find out the truth.

Nice post T, and I have to agree on sjm and Williebetmore they are both great people. Unlike JoeyA, I am asking for alot of weight from both guys in their respective games ;) LOL. I hope one of these days to make it out to the land of the Betmore's and atleast peak in the window of the basement. Although I feel the security maybe tough to get by, I just have to try and see it once in my lifetime.
Well maybe DCC will workout for me and I will get to see everyone there.

You're welcome, T.

Williebetmore, a more generous host than I could ever hope to be, and I have always found that spending time with fellow cuesports enthusiasts is, without exception, time well spent.

See you at the Derby!

Having just read a couple of total train-wreck threads, it is so refreshing to read a positive, well-written thread about two of AZB's finest.

I have been lucky to meet sjm once very briefly. And, I've corresponded with willie a few times. Both are top notch, as you've noted.

OMG, now I have to fade these two Super Heros next week at DCC. I hope their heads aren't too big to get in the door!
Just kidding boys, I agree with T man, you two are something else. Now about that twenty I owe both of you, can you hold off until the next DCC. I'm a little short this week. :D

I've not had the pleasure of meeting SJM but hope to one day.

I can agree that Don, I mean Willie is a gracious host. I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon shooting 14.1 with him a couple of years ago at the Betmore basement. What a treat it was.

I've had the pleasure of meeting a few great people from this forum..

It is nice to hear SJM is still spreading the wealth. lol. We haven't heard a lot from him lately. He usually calms flame wars. I too was hosted by him several years ago in NYC and as I posted then he was a most gracious and deep pockets host because pool time in New York at Amsterdam was not cheap, but I wonder if the new one added Brandy at the bar. An inside joke between SJM and I.
Hi S--

Oh yes they do. I'm yet to meet each of those great pool connoisseurs, but I'm certain I will. And I even know the place: Derby City Classic. Only the year is vague.

Two of our finest members here at AZB!

Dr. Willie B. More has entertained us many a time with his reports of what happens in his basement with assorted pool dignitaries.

And SJM is without any debate, one of the most knowledgable members we've ever had here. Total class and always very gracious. I've always enjoyed his posts.

Make sure you let me know when you make it to the DCC, way in advance!

V-man,
Don't be so sure...I was hoping to make it to Moscow within the next few years...well, unless you are ducking me...oh well, there must be someone else that plays pool in Moscow...or Russian pyramids....

Definitely let me know if you are in the country for DCC; I live quite close and could definitely set up some pool activities for you, and help some with lodging/transportation if you are going to make such a long trip.

JH,
Isn't that what you said LAST year (and the year before that, and the year before that, and the year.........)?

Anyway, I will have NO problem getting my head in the door (I bring a shoehorn and some lubricant just in case, though).

What a pleasure it is to read this thread.

Kudos to SJM and Mr. Betmore for their continual kindness in our world of pool and to "T" for shining the spotlight on them.

See, there really are some good guys in our midst!

Would love to see that famous basement someday, myself.

Best,
Brian kc

Yeah, but next year it will be different I promise you. I'm going to get a job!

JH,
Dang, something sounds a little fishy; I'm starting to think that you might be making up excuses...hmmm...you should have chosen a story more realistic and believeable, like "I'm going to win the lottery and pay you back next year." THAT I would have bought.
