Snooker Club in Springfield, VA

Just got back from this new Snooker Club that has opened up in Springfield, VA. The place is really nice except that there isnt any alcohol or regualr pool tables. I understand they are trying to do the whole Snooker european thing but most patrons want to play pool not snooker. Dont get me wrong I love to play snooker but only on the 5 x 10. They have two 6 x 12 tables and one 5 x 10 in the middle of them. They also have a hooka lounge so if you like to smoke the hooka its available.

Overall its a nice lounge like place that has potential to be really nice. Its the $15 a hour charge that keeps me from playing there. I don't have any pics but will get some later on.

I was talking to the owner for a far bit and threw around some ideas for him. He wants to hold tournaments and I asked him about formats and entry fees and he couldn't answer me!! So I said to him, "Let me get this right... You want to hold tournaments or league and you don't have anything you can tell me about them??" No handicap?? There was one guy there that wiped the floor with me!! He was draining 10 foot straight in shots with draw on the blue and pink balls at least 3 times in the one frame I played with him. So if he's gonna play in any tournament there I would need a hefty spot!!

My question is to everybody on here. What are your thoughsts??

I also told the owner to take that table rate down to maybe 7 or 8 tops and you may get more action.

Get in contact with Alan Morris with the USSA. With just 2 tables he would be better off to have a ladder system. Wish there was a club closer to me. The closest one in houston is over an hour from my house.

Thank you Marcus.

I have just been made aware of this - please ask the owner to contact me and I can publicize this new club on the SnookerUSA.com website. In fact, I just received a message this week about a gentleman who has moved to Virginia from Scotland and brought his snooker table with him, and he is looking for players in the area to play against.

Also Marcus, I may have some good news to you. I have been informed that a new snooker club will be opening in Houston for those players who live too far away from Champions Snooker - I will keep you informed!

Best wishes.

Alan.

Do you know which region of Houston this club will be in?

Thanks,
Marcus

kookoo

imo the owner is bonkers if he thinks he can hold a tournament with only two regulation tables. unless the format is a six red, single knockout with a 16 player field. and that's without any grinding;)

A format that works with 16 players on two tables is to divide them into four groups of four (A,B,C,D) and do round robin in the groups with matches of two frames (so the match can end tied). Alternate A and B starting at 10 AM and then C and D starting around 4PM. Frames can usually be finished in half an hour each. Play the top eight (or four) the next day in a knock-out (single elimination) format.

They have two 6 x 12 tables and one 5 x 10 in the middle of them. ...

Do they have a website? Do you have the phone number?

Mnorwood sent me a message about this place, but I haven't added it yet to http://www.findsnooker.com/Virginia.html.

Nice pics, by the way.

$15 sounds pricey, but for an upscale room with other attractions it's not unheard of. Is that a fixed rate regardless of the number of players? For example, can two players play for $15/hour?

How about running the tournament and/or leagues yourself? If you could generate enough interest among players to join a league, there's a chance the room owner could could league players a break on table time. For our 12' table table time is half off for league matches.

Prizes paid out from the league dues, including payouts to the player with the most wins, the highest break, etc.

I suspect it'd be difficult to maintain a regular schedule of snooker tournaments if you don't already have a base of enthusiastic players. If you start with a handicapped league, then after a few months you might host a mini-tournament to see how things go.
