Songs about or that mention pool

Pool lyrics

Willie Nelson -- "Mamas don't let your babies grow up to be Cowboys"

Lyric: "Cowboys like smoky old poolrooms and clear mountain mornings."

Lyrics to "The Pool Shark"

This made #1 on the country charts with Dave and Tom T Hall. The lyrics I found aren't in proper lines and verse but they ain't bad. Dave musta played pool once or twice.

Hu

He said pardon me for bein' so bold but you got a cigarette that's already rolled? I gave him one he lit it in his own good time
The smoke in that poolroom hung like a fog
When he talked it sounded like a growling dog
He said would you care for a dollar on the five or nine?

Now this man was ugly and his eyes were mean
His clothes were dirty but his hands were clean
He held that stick like a mother holds the hand of the child
Well I've been known to hustle a few when the waitress said was he playing you? And I said yeah bring me brandy water by

Little Red Parker was way in the back taking quarters and hadling racks
And I told him Red come up here glue 'em up tight
That brandy had me feeling warm I tipped that waitress and I checked her form And I said honey you like a winner and she just smiled

I played like a man with a broken wrist I won two and he won six
And I had him set up so I said let's play for five
But this time the crowd had gathered round to see this fish and just watch him drown I told that waitress more brandy water by

Then he went out and got a custom cue he said it's no offence to you
But I don't play off the wall with nobody but friends
He had a gold initials in a leather grip pearly and silver inlaid tip
He smiled at me and he said hell-a-way we play for ten

Well I never seen a man that walk who made those balls and table talk
They're speaking English he sure didn't need my help
He broke the ball and kept that string for a hundred and eighty seven bucks and a ring Till I gave up and said friend you're gonna have to play by yourself

Well he racked it up and walked outside and I strolled out just to watch him ride And there was a blonde in their Caddy built like the rest of that car
The boys in the poolroom they had 'em a laugh and I hung it up and just let it pass And had nothin' but my elbows to put on the bar

And the waitress smiled said water by I took the charity and thanked her polite And sittin' there sippin' and suddenly I had me a thought
Unlucky gambler and lucky in love guess you know what I was thinking of
When I said waitress honey what time do you get off?

Tom Waits has a couple of references to pool halls, and cue balls. Cannot tell you the name of the individual songs.

Definitely. 'Fumblin' With the Blues' is a great one.

Uptown got it's hustlers
Bowery got it's punks
42nd street got big Jim Walker
He's a pool shootin son of a gun
And when the bad folks get together at night
You know they just call him boss just because

You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off that ole lone ranger
And you don't mess around with Jim

Out of south Alabama come a country boy
He said I'm looking for a man name Jim
I am a pool shootin boy named Willie McCoy
Back home they call me Slim

Said I'm lookin for the king of 42nd street
He's drivin a drop top Cadillac
Last week he took all my money and it may sound funny
But I come to get my money back

You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off that ole lone ranger
And you don't mess around with Jim

Well a hush fell over the pool room
As Jimmy came boppin in off the street
And when the cuttin was done
The only part that wasn't bloody were the soles of the big man's feet
Yeah he was cut in about a hundred places
He was shot in a couple more
Now when the bad folks get together at night
You know they call Slim Boss, just because

You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off that ole lone ranger
And you don't mess around with Jim

Yeah big Jim found out where it's at. It ain't hustle people strange to you. Even if you do have a two piece custom made pool cue...

Jim Croche "Ya Don't Mess Around With Jim"

There is an old song by punk rock legends NOFX.
I believe the song is titled "Sloppy English".

Not one of their best, but here are some of the verses I remember:
"...i play pool 'cause i'm no fool..."
"...i play pool 'cause i'm cool..."
"...i play pool after school..."
"...i use that sloppy english all the time..."
:D

At the beginning, there is a sound of a typical 8ball barbox break shot...:D

KID ROCK - Forever

Kid Rock's song "Forever" includes the lyrics:

"watch me twirl like Earl the Pearl"
and
"8-ball side pocket, 8-ball in my jacket"

Not pool related, but related to pool

Strokin' by Clarence Carter - no lyrics pertaining to pool

Travis Tritt's "County club"

"I'm a bonafide dancin fool, I shoot a mighty mean game of pool"

It only references a game of pool, but I like the lyrics...

Band: Morphine
Song: Thursday

We used to meet every Thursday
Thursday
Thursday in the afternoon
For a couple a beers
And a game of pool

We used to go to a motel
A motel
A motel across the street
And the name of the motel
Was the "Wagon Wheel"

OH!

One day she said
C'mon C'mon
She said why dont you come back to my house
She said my husbands out of town
You know he's gone till the end of the month

Well I was just so nervous, so nervous
You know I couldn't really quite relax
'Cause I was really never quite sure
When her husband was coming back

It turned out it was one of the neighbors
One of the neighbors, one of the neighbors that saw my car
And they told her, yeah they told her
They think they know who you are

Well her husband is a violent man
A very violent and jealous man
Now I have to leave this town
I gotta leave while I still can

We should have kept it every Thursday
Thursday
Thursday in the afternoon
For a couple of beers
And a game of pool
(REPEAT 1X)

She was pretty cool too!

Sublime - Pool shark was about shooting up heroin.. Zero reference to pool, billiards, 8ball nothing.

Worst input .... ever.
2nd to yours, that is!

'My baby likes to shoot pool' is in the song...regardless of the metaphor, the quote, 'My baby likes to shoot pool' is in the song. While it may be a metaphor for heroin use, the quote, 'My baby likes to shoot pool' is in the song.

Ya, like I said earlier, some of us wouldn't know a heroin reference if we heard one

if shooting pool is a drug reference than it's over my head

Ok showing my age...........I havent listened to these track for specific references but here is the sound track of a movie from 1972. I remember the old movie cause we had a Young Black player "Tucker Brown" Youngblood here in Fort Worth who went to play one of the parts in this movie and did a lot of the shooting. I Think Tucker also did a part in "Shaft"

Trouble Man By Marvin Gaye was done for the movie sound track.

Interesting tidbit about this thread.

I'm on the newer side here, only been here a couple years, so I never saw any threads with them in it, but this thread has posts by both SmorgassBored and Eddie Wheat....
