Strickland vs. Saez

Just noticed the new video of this match on propoolvideo.com (awesome site, btw). Does anyone know what the purpose of the apparatus on Earl's arm is? It looks like he "stores" it up around his elbow while playing, but then moves it down by his wrist when breaking??? I have never seen anything like it, and I'm having trouble figuring out what it's purpose is. Thanks.

If I were you, I wouldn't be trying to apply logic to anything that Earl does. Did you also notice he tapes his grip hand fingertips. Hell, I heard he also used to try to put weights on his wrist when breaking. I have also seen him tape up his bridge hand fingers with extensions on them.

He's a wierd guy! Noone can tell you what he thinks he is doing with all that shit.

The last time I seen Earl play was at the Glass City open. His ferrule had a solid blue ring around it from the chalk. Yes! I think he has some issues. Still a great player. Wish I had half of his ability and skills.

Mostly he is a friendly type if he is winning and gets moody when losing but aren't most pros in any sport like that. Even us wannabees do the same.

rule question / comment

thanks for the tip about the match

A rule comment / question:

In the very first game, Saez plays a safetykick, hits the five and drives the five into the cushion. Strickland safes back, Saez replies with the very same shot, safetykick driving the five to the cushion, and repeats the shot for the third time after Stricklands safety reply.

As far as I remember, you can only repeat a safety twice, the third time you have to either
1. drive the object ball to another cushion, or
2. let whitey hit a cushion after impact, or
3. drive another object ball into the cushion

Actually, #3 was what Saez did with the 10-ball on his fourth safety kick on the five!

My point is, according to the world standarized rules Strickland should have had ball in hand after Saez' third safety, and would probably have won that game.

If Saez hadn't kicked the white into the 5-ball, but just shot it directly into the cushion, Earl may had remembered the rule.

Any refs out there who can confirm? Or am I wrong about this

It looks like it took Saez a few racks to loosen up. His stroke was real tight in the first few racks. He was over-hitting his shots and had a dead cue ball.

BTW, what happened in the 10th rack? One moment Earl was sizing up the 9 in the side and next frame he's racking them back up.

Pooladdict: I was wondering the same exact thing when he tried that same safe again...and again...and...

The gizmo has a Nike swoosh on it, so I figured that he had some kind of deal with Nike to wear it. I was at Capone's and the thing seemed to be annoying him. That's why he moved it off the elbow when breaking. He also had to be very careful when shooting over balls because it came dangerously close to touching them. When it slipped down of its own accord, rather than sliding it up by hand, he'd raise his arm straight up and shake it until it slid back down to where he wanted it. If I'd been playing at the next table, that might have distracted me.

My guess is he conceded the game. The 10 was setting in the pocket and an easy combination was assured after that dead on shot he was about to make. Earl just eliminated the misery...haha.

friendly indeed ! :D :D :D

I noticed that Earl conceded one game to his opponent with 7 balls left on the table. I like the guy but sometimes he is his own worst enemy.

It is called a Neo Sleeve. It is mainly used buy football players. As to why Earl is wearing one...Dunno. One thing about Earl, he is ALWAYS trying something to help his game. Eyelights, glove on both hands, finger extensions, etc.... Are they effective? Maybe, just maybe, all these things help him to improve his focus (at the table). Kinda like when you get a new cue (or even a tip), you play better, or at least more aware. Why? because you are focusing more on all the details (grip, stroke, squirt, etc) because you are evaluating...

Man thanks for the cool link. Yeah, I'm an Earl fan myself, but he sure does use some funny contraptions at times, lol. For example, why in the world would you need a weight belt to play pool?! Oh well, I'm still a fan of his talent, even though there are many other aspects of the man that I don't care for. Btw, anybody know what kind of cue Earl's shooting with? Is that one of Sigel's cues?

Well, I don't consider Earl weird for trying out all of the accessories or even inventing some of them. He is the most creative pool player in the world when it comes to his willingness to try new things to improve his game. It is one of the things that I respect about him. He is willing to try virtually anything to improve his game.

He wears the belt for added support. He's had a terrible time with his kidneys. (stones and such)

If I could play 1/2 his speed, I'd wrap up like a Mummy. If that's what it took........

Pretty sure he's still playing with a Cuetec.
