Strong Arm John?

Yes, you're right. The first time S.A. JOHN saw me use the TOI Technique was against Jimmy Wetch and he said it was "the highest 9 Ball speed I've ever seen". I always took that as a pretty good compliment because John's seen most of the best players play at one time or another.

you managed to turn that into a plug real fast.

talk about speed!

Yeah, like Buddy said "he'll never have to worry about a shot clock". ;)

I do have a LOT of Strong Arm John stories, probably enough for a complete book. He took me out of high school on the road all through Mo, Ks, Ok, and Texas back in 83.

Then we tortured the SE Coast of Florida, maybe people have heard about my matches giving Mario the 7 OUT in Miami. Come to think about it I believe someone contacted me that they have it on video. Now that would be interesting, maybe put some commentary on top of it.

If they don't, they should get fired. It saves OB at least a dollar depending on the salad and a few Pennies on prep. :)

I remember hearing a story (in Cape Girardeau MO) about Strong Arm John bringing in a girl (maybe she was his girlfriend) that could toss quarters in to a soda machine from like 10 feet away (I forget). My memory of the story is bad (because I heard the story like 15 years ago), but I think that the girl could toss the quarter in to the soda machine like 1 out of 10 times (or maybe it was 1 out of 5 times). I wish that I could remember the story better, but it was an interesting story. I never seen SA John play, but I heard that he was a great player (but always played very slow). The videos about the arm wrestling argument were so funny to me.

I've only seen him play on a bar table, but the one time I saw him really get down was in Memphis, maybe 7-8 years ago.

He was playing another well-known road man,and even though he didn't play totally flawless bar box 9-ball as far as playing safe or kicking,he got out EVERY time he was supposed to,with the cash on the line, and got the cash.

I like my arm too well to even try to arm wrestle with him,LOL. Tommy D.

John rolled thru Phoenix in the mid 80's driving a RV. He'd pull into the bars-poolrooms parking lots and set up camp.

He had one of the hottest ladies I have ever seen w/him. She'd refresh his bottled water as needed, and dab the sweat off his face as he played. Not only was she beautiful, she had the body Women wish they had. Complete, and total pkg.

I had just met my current wife and took her along to watch the action. John's girl was present as well. She had on a pair of the 'ankle' frilly socks w/a pair of tall heels, that set off her perfectly toned legs....and I made the mistake of letting out a mmm...mmm....mmm within audible distance of my new girl. BAD mistake.... I still hear about it from time to time....25 YEARS later.

I talked with John several years later,....turns out the Lady was a Miss Olympia, Miss America, or something similiar in bodybuilding.

Here's a shot 'looking down the barrel'

I have traveled with John a lot back in the 80.s. We were both from Decatur Il. One year we went out with Doug Smith. Some of the best 9 ball on both bar and big table playing I have ever seen. I am sure John will tell you the same thing. Doug Smith could flat play back then.

I felt like I was in the "Twilight Zone" at that moment.

I met Big John and Doug both in Quincy Il. when I was 16 years old. My road partner got up and played Doug a race to 11 for 500 and only got to the table twice(Doug ran a 3 and a 7 pack). That was the best I had seen anyone play up to that point and it was amazing.

After that incredible set another man walked up to Doug and said "do you want to play me a set?" Doug took one look at him and said "if you give me the Wild 8 I will".....I felt like I was in the "Twilight Zone" at that moment.

How many different cues did Doug Smith use during the set he played you?

Doug called me yesterday...He's doing good hanging out in Texas, but he can't play quite like that anymore :(
