Sugartree and Bluegrass Cues

Hope this makes some sence and is this NOW WAY badmouthing either cuemaker. I have the utmost respect for both guys and they both make wonderful cues.

My question is, since I have never own one and hopefully will soon.....What about Eric Crisp (Sugartree) How do people feel about his cues?

Now here is a scenario, lets say you give Richard and Eirc similar pieces of wood to build a cue. They made them in thier own shops.....How do you think they would compare, and differ?
The cues had to built to same specs, same tip, but they used thier pins, and bumpers, but used thier own shaft wood and used thier own rings. Which cue would you like best and why?

I just want to get a feel for what people like, or dislike about each cuemakers cues.. Not everyone will like both cues, I just want to know honest opinions

Again, not badmouthing any cue out there, I just want to know what your likes and dislikes are about each cue. And this will in NO WAY affect the orders I already have with both cuemakers!

This should be really interesting.

I mean, I really want to own a Tad. So much so it's sick--and only after hitting with one in one sitting. Not knowing anything about the maker, and it just had a magical quality. So, yeah.

Can I ask why these two makers specifically?

Take me for example. I have 3 Dennis Searings, 2 South West (JF era) Black Boar, Scruggs, Schick, Tad. Me personally, they all hit GREAT, but for my feel, I like the feel and hit of one of my first cues I ever bought a Ivory Jointed Joss West.

Sounds to me since you like JW and prefer it to the other cues with parabolic taper, you'd like ST over RH ( parabolic tapered butts ).

I actually had a chance to play some with Eric a few weeks ago and i got to hit with one of his cues. I've never hit with a better cue than the one he made. I've hit with a lot of cues and i can honestly say i was impressed with every aspect of his work. The cue was beautiful and the hit was solid. Eric takes a lot of pride in his work. My next cue will definately be a sugartree.

Honestly, I just wanted to get everyones input on these 2 cuemakers. Likes and dislikes. And again, if it is coming off like i am badmouthing Eric or Richard..I am not at all! I just assume these 2 cues have a different feel to them. What is this feel that you guys like is what I am asking...and the craftsmanship...

Or am I comparing apples to oranges in this case?

Pics man, we need pics. It's just not right that you own such fine cues and haven't shared them with the other nuts. I mean 3 Searings, those are like white elephants....help a fellow Okie out.

I have owned one Sugartree and hit with two others and owned three Bluegrass cues and I would say the Bluegrass cues all had a stiffer hit than the Sugartree cues. They were all excellently built and all hit very solidly and I will probably owne more of each in the future since I am a chronic cue trader.

I've had 6 Blugrass cues, and 4 Sugartrees, all of them played very solid, and they were all pretty consistant across the board. They also have very similar shaft tapers...

Hi.

I have had a bit of experience with both cues. And this is just my $.02...

I owned a Bluegrass several years ago and have played with a few others. My opinion of these cues is they are downright some of the THE BEST playing cues out there. I've owned a bunch of cues before. Some of them from some pretty big name cuemakers. And I have to say, letting go of the Bluegrass was one of my biggest cue regrets!!! And I am constantly looking for another (especially the sneaky petes; so if you have one for sale, please PM me  )!!!

I have also owned two Sugartrees before. I've also played with a few that weren't mine. These cues ALSO play really, really well. They were up there with some of the better cues I have played with. The woods are pretty and they often speak for themselves without a need for a ton of inlays and stuff.

Which did I prefer? Bluegrass. Why? Couldn't really tell ya. For some reason, the fit was a little better for my game. But thats not to say the Sugartrees aren't worth the money! They totally are. If you go in either direction, you'll probably be happy.

I know this isn't really the type of answer you were looking for. But thats my story. Bottom line, both cues are AWESOME players in my opinion. You'll be happy with either.

I've never owned one of Eric's cues, but I have played with a Blue Grass.

The one thing that stands out to me TO THIS DAY, is that the shafts on a Blue Grass cue are absolutely, bar none, THE SMOOTHEST in the industry. These shafts feel like teflon coated glass.

It's just unreal the kind of care that Richard puts into that part of his cues, and that alone would sway me to the Blue Grass side.

i've never owned a bluegrass but i have owned a sugartree. i like the shaft/but taper he uses. it's easy to get used to and the shaft is comfortable when cueing. it might just have been mine but it had a crisp hit.

i don't think you could go wrong with either cue maker though

How is it going man. Those are two great choices for a cue. I will give my two cents worth. I have owned several of each and still own one of each. BOTH are very solid and well built cues. The bluegrass cues that I have used have all had a similar hit from one to the other. The 6 or 7 sugartrees I have played with have also had a consistent hit similar to the other sugartrees.

The bluegrass cues shafts are smooth as glass when you first get them! The butt of the bluegrass seems a little bigger in diameter towards the end. I think the bluegrass cues hit a little softer personally than the Sugartrees do. Very solid but a little softer than I like. The Sugartrees have all hit very solid but also have a very NICE DISTINCT sound that I really like more than anything I have ever tried.

I personally like Sugartrees overall more and it is my playing cue. That is not to say that I don't love the bluegrass quality and hit also. I have went through a ton of cues and both of these cues are still in my possesion for the fact that both are great playing cues. I hope this helps out some.

Helps alot actually, Thanks Trav. I have hit with a Bluegrass before and I must say I really liked how it hit. There is a 16yr old kid at the pool hall that I go to that got a Sugartree used somewhere and I got to hit with it last night. I have to say, for my hands, the Sugartee just fit me actually alot better than most cues I have hit with. And now I know what all the fuss is about a Sugartree.....man, this was a sweet hitting cue. And the looks, Holy Crap....the wood in this cue was absolutely amazing. Maybe one of these days when I grow up....I can own a Sugartree also...

I would have either cues most definately, but for my taste and feel....I think a Sugartree is going to be more my fit!

Congradulations on Eric and Richard for making such an awesome cue!
