The AZ Room @ The Derby City Classic

I will not be attending the Derby City Classic, but it would still be my pleasure to contribute $50 to this worthy cause.

Thank You sjm, Very Much!

Tracy,
Man, those are good ideas. I sort of like the idea of players paying table time. I have this nightmare of people kicking in for a table, then NEVER getting to play on it because someone is monopolizing play. Even at $5 and hour for the table, over 8 days it almost pays for itself if it is kept busy.
I wonder if it could be a Diamond Smart Table. If so, then nobody really needs to be collecting the table time.

Tracy

OHB,
Well, I believe you are correct; it looks like this could work, there has been significant interest so far.

What were your thoughts on paying table time?

So far, I've heard some incredible names bandied about as possibly making an appearance. Are we thinking this table will be mainly a challenge table for single game or short race challenges among the AZB'ers (one-pocket and 14.1 take a fair amount of time); with intervals where the pro's can come in and take on challengers?

Do you think we could get some type of chalkboard or message board to post events so everyone will know ahead of time when the pro's will be there?

Several players have expressed interest in ring games (which could take a fair amount of time) - perhaps a few AZB ring games for small (or large) stakes would also be interesting.

I think table time may help prevent your previously mentioned nightmare from becoming a reality. I would like to see a responsible person, have the ability to over-ride the table time, in the case of a pro exhibition.

I would pay like $5 or $10 for a race to 5 with the pros, or semi-pros, but definitely not that amount for just one rack. I'm thinking only 9 or 8 is time efficient for something like that. A ring game with a small buy-in would be okay for me....I'm fine with paying like $20 upfront but if I still have to pay per hour to play and all then I'd think twice for sure. Also, a board that would indicate when and which pros would be there would be great.....especially cos a lot of us are not going to the DCC for the entire duration.

Here is a preliminary run-down of finances so far. It looks good for as short a time as this has been going.

Willie Betmore = $100
SJM = $50
KtownD = $40
Gerry = $100
RSBRefugee = $50
Mthornto = $50
VonRhett = $50-$100
Raemondo = $20
MikeTempleton = ????
Boradriver = $20

Total so far = $480 - $530

Pro’s mentioned so far in PM’s or on thread (should be considered WILDLY speculative at this point)

Buddy Hall
Danny Basavich
Sarah Rousey
Jeanette Lee
George Breedlove
Grady Mathews

Man, who wouldn’t want to match up with one of them for a game or two??

P.S. - Are we all talking about matching up with these pro's (not just paying $5, $10, or $20 just to play them)? Do you guys think the pro's are even interested in playing if there is a chance they'll owe money if they lose? What kind of situation would all of you like to see regarding the pro's???

I just had another idea, we could sell raffle tickets all week long. Winner of the raffle gets to play a big name player in a race to X, hopefully at least to 9. The big name player, hopefully Efren, gets half of the proceeds.

If the winner beats the big name player (yeah right) he gets the other half of the proceeds.

I think having a ring game or two sounds like a good idea. I am quite positive I am not one of the stronger players but I do enjoy a good ring game. Having some of the pros show up is not out of the question however expecting them to hang out and play cheap sets is pretty far fetched IMO. Between preparing for matches and enjoying other endeavors (gambling sessions,floating casino,alcohol) many are "too busy" to fraternize for extended periods. I do however think that the room will get plenty of use. Getting closer to the magic #, keep those pledges coming in. (I feel like I am answering phones for Jerry's Kids.)

I agree, them pros wouldn't really want to come play cheap sets with us....and paying them just to play just doesn't seem too favorable to me...perhaps we can tempt them with free alcohol or food? And I'd LOVE to see a ring game between all of them!

I don't know if I'm really interested in playing at all, but I'm sure me and the other guys at IU who are coming would like to hang out and meet some of ya'll.

I am going to be there and will probably be staying with Chris Bartram and Danny Basavish. I can get Danny to make an appearance for an appearance. But he is expensive, maybe 3 or 4 drinks for an hour worht of time. Let me know.. he owes me one!

Would appreciate it if you can get Danny in touch with me. We are shooting a television show at Derby City and I would like to get him involved.

I have this nightmare of people kicking in for a table, then NEVER getting to play on it because someone is monopolizing play. Even at $5 and hour for the table, over 8 days it almost pays for itself if it is kept busy. Maybe we could get donators to front the $1000, then return any portion not used; or as you say have some sort of contest (a "mini" on 1 table is a little difficult, but not impossible at DCC if the numbers are small). Who would collect the table time?????

I VERY MUCH like the idea of getting pro's to play cheap challenges (or expensive if that is someone's taste). Perhaps the members that know pro's (or are pro's) could wangle a 1 hour block of time - we post it on a board inside the room ahead of time - then everyone could challenge the pro for $5, $10, or $20 (the pro's may want at least a $20 game). Friends should probably offer to back their pro for any overall losses (just in case, remember 9-ball is a stupid game). Would these challenges, if pre-arranged, have preference over ongoing action on the table? I, for one, would be mortified if I got a top pro to commit to a time, and then couldn't get them on the table.

Is anyone interested in getting a couple of pro's to shoot it out on our table (like a private gunfight) - or are we mainly thinking about us playing on it. I know I am much more interested in spectating than playing (well except for WallyinCincy), but I have no idea what others think.

What do people think about these ideas?

How would you all feel if we could set up a money match between top players in this room for television? Then all the AZ'ers (and only AZ'ers) would be spectators on TV and we would talk to you as part of the show. For this show we would want feedback on the match from the audience. Such as "Who do you like and why", "Who are you betting on, how much and with who" etc. This might make for some interesting programming. Kind of a constant running commentary with members of the audience.
We would like to "mike" the players and maybe the backers also.
This show has been in the planning stages for months and we already have a go-ahead from Greg Sullivan to shoot it. I am open to any ideas on how we can create an interesting "reality" type show.
Thanks, Jay

JH,
I for one would like it very much. Some AZB'ers have expressed reluctance to tie up the table with a marathon pro match (the "ahead sets" can take days); but if it was a race then I think your idea sounds great. I would love to see such a reality show, and I'll make it a point to be in attendance if it comes off (though I'm only there Wednesday to Saturday).

Do you think?

that with the IPT KOH tournament just completed,
that all this extra buzz will carry over to the DCC
to help make it even better this year?

Not A Negitive - But - A problem must be addressed.

Tracy - I have always been impressed with your responsible nature and I vote that you Run This Room.
Someone is going to have to be "On Duty" to run things and look out for AZers best interest. I would like to think this will be a secure place to leave sticks & stuff.
I personally will be too busy losing all my Ca$h to any and all that I play.
Maybe a SIGN UP sheet for a one hour time slot.
Anyway, all that stuff can be worked out - AFTER WE GET THE CASH.
I am going to try to get with Mike Maloney (semperfi) and see what he thinks.

Later, Tom
