The Giant Killer: W T H?

I go to a tournament this weekend and the tournament director is bidding me in the Calcutta and starts talking about how I am a Giant Killer. I really don't like being called a Giant Killer. Every now and then I win a match against a good player but it is really rare. To have the tournament director blowing smoke up my arse and all of the other bidders just to get the price of my bid up is ridiculous.

Because of this, (at least that's what I'm blaming my latest mediocre play on) I played poorly and got whacked so hard by Rob Saez that I'm sitting here at my desk whining my arse off wondering why some people have to exaggerate my capabilities and why I have a problem with them doing that.
Rob beat me 9-2. I gave him at least 4 games, i mean handed them to him on a silver platter. I don't mind losing, well I don't like losing but I can tolerate it if I played my average speed. One of the other players said I shouldn't be so hard on myself. I'm steamed because I lost but also the Giant Killer BS chaps my arse too. I know the tournament director is just trying to hype my skills but is that really fair to me or any of the Calcutta buyers?

What can I do to not let this type of name calling negatively affect my game? That's the question. Do you have any answers for me? I'm serious. I don't think I will be able to go to sleep until someone gives me a reasonable solution that I can implement.

I'm going back tomorrow morning. I'm still in the tournament on the one loss side, hanging by a thread and will give my best effort tomorrow. My best effort to day wasn't equal to my average level of play. What to do? What to do?

Thanks, I'll be checking this thread tomorrow morning to see if there are any good suggestions that I can use and move on from here.

Just be yourself, Joey. If you do your best, then you'll have done the best you can do.

Joey, you've been around a long time, I'm kinda surprised you let something like this phase you, in the least. The guys who run calcuttas are trying to pump up the calcuttas. Don't take anything they do too seriously. BTW, most people have heard of you anyway, from AZ or your announcing or your playing. If you can't let it slide then 1) Don't go to the calcuttas, 2) As suggested above, wear ear plugs(muffs) ala Earl, or 3) Stand up and shout "You lie!!", like Rep. Joe Wilson shouted to Obama.

would you prefer it if they said .. avoid that loser like the plague...

here I am .. garden variety millionaire with an incredibly hot wife..

someone said I was living like bill gates... I can't play that speed but to the people on the bottom it might look like it...(I can throw a nice party once in a while)

one mans blessing is another mans curse...

I'd LOVE to be called "Giant Killer." I'm usually referred to as "Hack", "Banger", or "Choke Artist."

Seriously, Joey, take it as the complement that I'm sure it was meant to be. The TD was just having some fun and trying to build up the calcutta. It's nothing to get worked up over.

Must be something in the air there this weekend Joey , i watched Gary Lutman beat Max Eberle 9-5 , and it was a sloppy match for both , in my opinion . I think Max missed a couple of easy cuts for a player of his caliber. I wonder why people think playing on bar tables is always a gimme , like it is easy compared to 9 's ?

You can lay out on bigger tables better and eyeball your angles better . Because of the shorter table and the balls being closer together people stand up more on shots on bar tables . I bet you shoot on bigger tables at your home room and maybe there is an adjustment time.

Hi there Joey,

Sometimes something like that can sneak into our own head. And it just gets stuck there and can affect our thinking and our play.

All we can do is go into our bag of mental weapons and try to erase the thought that is erroding our immediate task.

Like:mad::angry::yikes:and replace it with :ignore::cool::yeah:

Sometimes for me it can be a guy on the next table that got in my way. I get a little upset but if I don't forget it out of my immediate conscious mind I'm in trouble. There's only so much room in that head for what we need to do.

I usually do some deep breathing before I go to bed and try to make sure I get 8 or 9 hours of sleep. If the thought of that calcutta guy gets back in your head try to associate it with something funny. Put it in the funny catagory with something else. :groucho:

Mo matter what it is you need to put it somewhere else in your mind. in a different file other than the one your going to use right now.

And you know you have been playing pretty good at these tournys.

You might be getting ready to snap one of these suckers off.

I'm your biggest fan. give'em hell.

Geno..........

PS: Hopefully your opponent today heard this at the calcutta and he might have the thought in his head that you might just kick his arse, and just maybe this thought might help you out with a game. Then you run out or play a dead nutz safe, get ball in hand and he's really in trouble for real.

It could just work in your favor.

JoeyA,

Your response internally could change to...thats right, im the GIANT KILLER and im gonna take these guys down. :D lol. It could borderline arrogance, however, confidence does effect play and it sounds like that may be what happened. You got so wrapped around the axel about what he was saying, that you weren't focused in the game.

Know your own speed, and beat that ass tomorrow. Forget what anyone else thinks about you or says about you. Only you can effect your own game!! You got this!

:)

Players that like to stay under the radar and call thenselves "B" players don't like to be called "Giant Killer's" on the Internet stream lol. Johnnyt

I asked you about me not being able to get into the tournament at Buffalo's Billiards The Worlds Pool Hall! You looked at me and said, Lock You have to Really want it to do good in it! that stuck in my mind. I said to myself all this time and all it takes is to really Want it! After that statement from you to me I understand better....

This tournament is just another tournament! You are still JoeyA, that is what is important right now, and only that fact. Chew you a pack of Juicy fruit gum at one time and Focus on the task at hand, Win!!!!! Be yourself, do not let anything Rattle you! Play your Game and the Table not your opponent! Take your time and Play your Heart out. Forget about all the rest of the garbage because that is what it is, Garbage. When in the war you are at war! You do not let the Enemy get the Best of you or capture you.... You fight with all you can gather to fight with! If you run out of ammo you throw rocks or sticks. As long as you defeat the Enemy!!! No White flag for JoeyA! I think you can win it all! Just my opinion!
Regards, and Good luck,
Lock N Load.

Played poorly... Well, I understand that there's this aiming system out there that all the pros are using. Basically, if you use this system (which is exact and involves no feel or intuition on the player's part), you'll be able to make any shot. In fact, with this system you don't even need to know where the pocket is at. hmmm, I think Bustamonte uses it. I think it's called CTE or something. And then there's Pro 1 -- have you seen the DVD? You should check it out -- maybe it would help?

Lou Figueroa
if that doesn't work
you might want to check out
where you're positioning
your dominant eye

It must be a LA thing because the last time I was down there I had someone do the very same type thing to me.

Now get yourself a tissue wipe the tears and go play some bar box 9 ball GIANT KILLER.

Joey just get a bigger sling:thumbup:. I got no answers for you. Only advice is go back to the basics. Preshot routine, line it up, practice strokes, shoot , the balls in the hole. No more no less.

I can see where it would bother you, but he is trying to build the pot up anyway he can.

A friend bought me recently in a 9 ball tournament and I can't play a lick of 9 ball anymore. I promptly went two and out, losing my last match to a young kid. I doubt my friend would ever bid on me again.

I played some of my best pool in Southern California in the late 80's early 90's at Hard Times in Bellflower. I moved back to Northern California in 91. I went down to Southern CA from time to time and always stopped by Hard Times for a little action. One trip a guy came up to me and introduced himself as John Henderson and admitted to me he was about a C player and wanted to meet the other John. He said he recently played in one of the open 9 ball tournaments and was surprised when he was bid up to around $100. Turns out someone thought I had come down for the tournament. We had a good laugh about it but I bet the guy who bid was pissed.

We have a nice one pocket tournament coming up In Mountain View the 27th. $4,000 added and lots of the big boys will be here because of the $12,000 added Seminole Tour 10 ball starting the 29th. They may have a calcutta (Players Auction out here) and I can probably buy myself for $20 in this field.

Should be a good tune up for Las Vegas.

Knock em dead today and show them boys why they were bragging on you. John

The mind is powerful.

It is odd what we do to ourselves. I like Gene's advice to compartmentalize it in the funny side of the brain and then it would not be a bother to you. Next time you can realize what is going on and do something like that. For whatever reason you let it bother you and your programmed brain had to show that you are not a "giant killer" that day. Live and learn. Here we are on "earth" and still learning. I bet you will handle it differently the next time something like that happens. It is easy for us to say not to let that bother you, but it did, darn it. So I learned in a seminar once that when somebody is saying something that is negative to say to yourself "cancel, cancel, cancel" over and over and their negative thoughts are replaced with positives. It reminds me of a golf tourny (club championship) years ago when I was a 10 handicap and I was playing with the last foursome of club champs one of which was a previous pro and we were all within a stroke of each other. I hole another long putt that was going Mach One speed and dunks and he says "they just don't make 10 handicaps like they used to." Enough said. The next day I proved that I was truely a 10 handicap. Now when someone jokes about me being a sandbagger I say "that is the best compliment you pay me, thanks." I saw your match and you jumped up on the shots you missed which should have been gimmies. You had me talking to my computer! I knew there was something going on because I've seen you play before. Yesterday was "the old Joey and today (like Scarlet said, "I'll worry about that tomorrow.") The bottom line, you lost focus on the job at hand. Go get um, and kill some giants!

What great replies!

Those responses say a lot about the kind of people you are.

It's really nice to be able to come on a forum like this and whine, complain and let off a little steam to people who care about you and who understand the game of pool.

Thank you for all of your responses. Believe me, I read every one of them carefully and know that you've given me some great advice and I mean it seriously, thank you for taking the time to respond.

It's nice to have some backup from pals like you.

Coming to this forum and seeking advice is like having your own personal think tank.

Today, I'll remember your advice and try to utilize it because it was all good information. I will play to the best of my ability today, whatever that might happen to be.

Thanks guys! :yeah:
