I'm not trying to go off topic with this response, but your story makes me want to share a personal break through I had with my game. I've spent a lot of time watching the Star Billiards stream (
http://www.starbilliards.co.cc/) since last December or so. I began to notice something with the Filipinos. When I played in the 9 ball at the Derby this year for the first time it became even more obvious to me when observing their play.
They do not sweat the small stuff. Noise, conditions, where the chalk is at on the table, etc does not matter to them. They may be aware of it, but they do not stress about it. You'll see matches at Star where people are leaning on the tables directly next to theirs, sometimes even leaning on the table they are shooting on, or the magic rack sitting on the table the entire rack.
They just shoot pool. EVERYONE should take note of this.
Once I realized I didn't need a specific amount of warm up time before a match, whether the chalk is upside down on the table, if my favorite song was on the jukebox or if there was potato chip crunching going on in the background, I was able to put my focus where it should be, on the table.
Just play pool, Earl.
