well stated. No one can describe fred better than that.

I really don't care about every detail of Freddy's life and don't see how who he may have beat or lost to in 1985 relates to the quality of his books.

I have Banking With the Beard. My advice is that you go way out on a limb, put your $30 at risk and BUY IT!

because of this great thread, just today I bought his new book. Just leafing through it, I found it to be great. thanks for the great book, and even if you are not one of the 3 greatest bankers of all time, you are still a great player and an asset to the az community and to pool. thanks for that and thanks for posting on here.

What is a Shawn Armstrong???

Why did you feel the need to drop names? Was it to impress us? I can't figure out another reason for doing this. To me, it was woofing.

Who is Shawn Armstrong??? YOU think you're something don't you?
Fred Bentivegna is a legend. Who are you? Who did you ever beat that didn't have an APA handicap? Post your list. Oh, never mind. Nobody cares who you play with.

You're one of these wanna be's who come out of the sewer every so often to rag on someone who has not only posts better than you ever will, but he plays 1,000 times better than you ever will.

Somebody ASKED HIM A QUESTION. He ANSWERED a question about how good he played. He didn't say "I'm the greatest. He gave a list as long as the enemies you made here on guys he beat. How good he played was left up to the reader of said list. Then lo and behold, it's a bird, it's a plane, no...it's SHAWN ARMSTRONG out to put down a legend. Who are YOU?

I can't believe how disrespectful you are. And you're probably pretty proud of yourself. Happy too.

This is why ambulances get called to pool halls.

You might want to actually see Freddie play via AccuStats. He has a tape playing some guy named "The Hat"? Or at the DCC recently at the Bank Ring game.
I think he does some nice commentary work all be it he does come from the Chicago school. Where you just stifle your opponents to death. He poses a lot of interesting thoughts as a commentator. I have his book as it is one of the few bank books available. But I am a strict Diliberto fan as far as insight to the one pocket game.

I'm not Freddy - but I might help with a semi-educated guess.

In Freddy's generation of action players the statement
"I beat player X" means you won a SESSION against Mr. X
not one game, not one set, not one match, but an entire session.

Things change over time - when Freddy first hit his stride,
action players didn't play sets/races - at least, not the ones I ever sweated - that came in the late 70s - after tournaments were more
common - there basicaly was no such thing as an action players
tournament prior to Johnston City.

Action took two formats.

game-at-a-time, payoff after each game - quit when you've had enough,
quitting winners was considered extremely bad form, the major nit move.

Freeze out - what is now know as an 'ahead set' to a pre-arrainged
number of games ahead, where each player puts up the money
before play starts<freezes up the cash>.

I don't mean to imply Fred must have won a session against
everyone on the list, doubtless some are short set victories,
probably in a tournament - but, I assume significant number
are sessions

Freddie and Jay answered my original question perfectly. Thanks for the intelligent responses. I never intended to cause a problem...just wanted an unbiased opinion. I appologize for miswording my original post. I added the line "this thread may cause a problem" because it seems that whenever anyone has a question about someones playing ability, somebody has to woof it up and make fun of you for posting the question. I have been around the game for about 10 years now and have heard conflicting stories about the Beards game from various sources...some good and some bad. I was just curious to get your, the forums, input on the situation. Thanks to those who answered my question...especially Jay and Freddie.

Aaron,

For what it's worth, I re-read your original post several times and personally, I do think you were just trying to get a better assessment of Freddy's speed. I also think you wrote it "respecfully" as well. I personally may have left out the stuff about the negative things you may have heard, but that's just a matter of writing style I guess.

From your posts and the PMs we've exchanged in the past, I'll vouch for you being a good guy here. Not that you need it. Freddy's the one under the bus right now, but he's got many friends here vouching for him as well.

Nevertheless, whenever I here the infamous story of Mrs O'leary's cow kicking over the lantern and burning down half of Chicago....I'll think of you I'm sure!

Peace to you my friend :)

So, I'm a troll because I express my opinion? Freddy didn't need to respond to it. The greats never have to - their reputation speaks for themselves.

with respect Shawn, those who aren't "greats" who question those or realize those who are, can very easily "create" a reputation for themselves, especially in an open forum setting which can speak for their self as well.

I'd say you'd have legitimate bragging rights for that one set. While it's only a set, a set it is. To me, that sort of thing should be followed up with a comment along the lines of "while he should usually win against me, I did, in fact, whup him three separate times." It doesn't take anything away from the other fellow, at the same time it's gotta feel good to say that.

Shawn Armstrong - YOu have got the 7 ball from me anytime. You have to bet forum banishement forever - whichever one of us loses agree to banish ourselves from all pool forums forever.

I'd like to compile a list of players like Freddy has that is even 1/4 as good as his - even if they were races to three of three ball.

You use stupid over-exaggerated made up examples to prove your fantasy ideas.

I will stake Freddy against you any day of the week in any game on a pool table. You can get your shot to add HIM to your list of people you beat - the only stipulation - you have to bet a large amount of money so you can say you actually won something.

Freddy! Your book IS THE NUTS - I have won a good amount of money banking balls in 9-ball, 8-ball, and 1-pocket using the techniques in your book. I am sorry but I hope you go broke trying to sell it because I hope that most of the Know-Nothing nits who would rather call you out in this disgraceful manner instead of coming off $15 will stay ignorant so I can BUST THEM.

If all this is because you want to buy his book....just buy it. I can tell you his book is very good and will help your banking game. You DON'T have to be the best to write a book. You don't have to be a world champion to teach pool. Some of the current best teachers in pool & billiards do not hold any/many titles, especially #1 world rankings.

I have read his book "banking with the beard" and it help my banking game and speed control (more than any bank book or tape I've ever read/watched). It is worth the money. I do not know Freddy, but I could care less as to his past rankings in bank pool. He knows how to bank and he will teach you a lot about banking if you read it and apply the principles he is teaching.

Sell it on Amazaon used books if you don't like it.:D

I'm not questioning his ability...I don't truly know his ability. A few strong players have told me one thing and other players have told me something else. I would like to know the truth. I like to read Freddy's posts and would like to purchase his book. However, I would like to know some information first. As I said in my original post, I mean no disrespect. Just because you know how someone plays, that doesn't mean the I do. I think that this post is perfectly legit. coming from a young person like myself.

If you were going to send your kid to a tutor, wouldn't you want to gain information about that person. I don't know that much about him that is why I am asking. I want to know how much to trust his posts and his knowledge of the game.

If you would go back and read my post again, you will see that the post was tactful and if you can't handle someone discussing another persons game knowledge, then you need to grow some thicker skin.

Some of us haven't been around the pool world forever. Some of us don't live our lives researching the game of pool. You should not belittle posters who are simply trying to gain information about a player in order to improve their game.

Also, it is quite hilarious that you would bring up spelling and punctuation marks on posts. I guess you must be taking a grade. I will do my very best to edit my posts for your liking the next time I make one Dr. English.

Call me a realist, but the only posters that I truly take much stock in about instruction are Grady and David S. since I have watched Grady play numerous times and I consider David a good friend.

If people like Freddy are going to post on this forum trying to get much to check out their latest book or visit their new blog, I feel that I DEFINATELY have the right to discuss how reputable their abilities are in comparison to other top pro's.

Once again...no disrespect to the Beard...i'm just looking to gain some information about, what appears to be, a great player from the past.

I went over Freddies list to see how many of these guys I have played over the 50+ years I have been playing. Some of them in tournaments and some gambling. Somewhere between 30 & 35 of them. Then I went back over it to see how many I have won against. My God! I really am a sucker. John Henderson

I'm too old to go for that con, John. You will not trap me in Derby City. I heard you can still play a little. Unfortunately, a little is now too much for me. I will have to leave you to play Bruce The One Pocket Ghost, he's probably more your speed.

Good read Freddie. John is relentless. I'm trying hard to make myself play a little so I can take a ball from John and play some One Pocket, his best game.

That's right John, one stinkin' little ball, 8-7. That's all I want. Your neighbor T-Rex gave me 8-4 and beat me. It's true, just ask him. I felt like a total sucker after that, and for 300 a game too. I KNOW he can't give you that game.

Let me know if you want to play, and give me a couple of weeks to get ready. 50 or a 100 a game is fine. Nothing serious. If you want, we can play Banks even also. Some of both.

Now lay off Freddie. He's so far over the hill, he went over the next hill too. :)

Old habits die hard Freddie and I would love to play the Ghost some, but he wanted me to send him a plane ticket when he was in So. Cal. I gamble a little but don't bet enough to send good players plane tickets. I guess I'll have to see If I can get Jay to switch to 9/8.

I know you probably mean well, kid, but I am a little warm at those bank pool shortstops in Louisville. My pal, Truman probably got you all riled up. I did go into Louisville looking to play anybody in town (except Truman). With all those big mouth, great players there, they mustered up one guy to play some $50 a game. Gerald. I played in that little creep joint on the 4 x 8's and did lose a few games to Gerald. Nobody else would play, and nobody would bet anything either and nobody would go play on a 4 1/2 by 9 including Gerald. And nobody from there, sure as sh*t ever came up to Chicago to get some. Actually, Fargo did come up twice when I was on my final gasps. He lost both times. Once for money, and once in the Chicago Bumps bank pool tournament. Although truthfully, by then I didnt like his action and was glad to escape.
Jay, thanks for sticking up for me, but I must also take issue with the ten or fifteen guys that you say could spot me. Who were they? Check out the list below. Only three guys spotted me on that list. Bugs, Truman and CornBread. Everybody else I beat even at least once. (Now don't be throwing batting averages, Jay. I only said I beat 'em all even at least once.) Makes you feel kinda good to be on that list though, don't it?
Is this list impressive enough for you, Bomber?

First off as a Chicagoan who has seen Freddie play many top players I would like to say I never saw him ducking anyone who came to town. I've seen Freddie play Bugs, Efren, Incardona, Melvin "Strawberry" Brooks to name a few and if you look at his list I can say there is no embellishing there. Seems there is always someone trying to knock or discredit someone who has gained some recognition. Once again I think Jay nailed it in his post. Philw

Shawn-It is better to be thought of as stupid than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
