To refinish or not to refinish an older SW

Guerra Cues

I build one cue at a time

Hey guys,
Need some opinions here so I can make up my mind...
I recently picked up a SouthWest from 1997 and it is one of the best hitting SW's I've ever had and on the top 3 of best hitting cues I've ever owned...
- Can a refinish change the hit of a cue?
- I am picky with the stuff I own and sell and I like my stuff in top condition... I talked to to a few local older players and they told me if I refinish the cue it might remove a bit the character of the cue. The SW has a few dings and has a wrap that could very well be replaced., basically needs a bit of a face lift...
Would you guys have the SW refinished and have that "tummy tuck" done?

Refinish but let Laurie and company do it if possible. Could lose some of it's value in some people's eyes if someone else does it.

If it was me....no doubt about it....I am picky about my cues and I like it looking as best as it can

Not me

I would leave it alone if you are going to keep and play with it. if you sell it let the new owner decide.

I'll update the thread later on today with pics. The one I have from the previous owner are not the best.

Call Laurie and ask how long it will take. They may give you a time frame when they can do it, so they will have it the least amount of time.

A better "factory finish" will increase value and playability will remain the same.

Tony, what he said.....if it's gonna be a player, just enjoy it.....when you get ready to sell or case it, then consider a refinish....

This is the good advice. Also, I've never had a refinish change the hit or play of a cue. Sloppy work can definitely ruin a cue, however.

If the appearance of the cue is bothering you, by all means get it refinished - it will look like new again.

Thanks for all of your input guys. I really appreciate it. I will have it refinished.

Have you considered Maaco? :scratchhead:

Just play with it. Add a few dings so when you do have it refinished you will get your moneys worth. :yeah:

I would have to agree.Having it done by Laurie you then know it's done right and at their standards as well as being done correct. It may cost a little more but well worth it in the long run.Just my 2 cents my friend.:D

If you have it refinished and it changes the hit, man they did something way wrong, lol.

I have a SW 1986 with authentication papers from Laurie. When she authenticated it in May, she asked about re-finishing it and I said no way. I have the cue in my collection and I think it is more valuable in the original finish. Now that being said if the cue was totally abused by the previous owner, then I would say yes.
So I guess you still have a decision to make. You have a great cue what ever you decide.

Good luck!

Follow Cuaba's advice. He's had a couple SW's. I've had about 15 of them and had Laurie refinish 3. They came back looking brand new but it takes a WHILE.
