Top Pros Flocking To BB Tournaments

It seems like there are a lot more high added $ BB tournaments around the country and more top pros flocking to them. Seems like the PPV and the gates are doing OK with them too. I think most are catering to league players because that is where the money in pool seems to be. I just wish they would stop playing so much 9-ball on them and go to 10- ball with no jump-cues and 8 ball, take what you make...no JQ's on the boxes. Johnnyt

I'm with you on the 9 ball and I like 10 ball however I like it call shot call safe with jump cues
You Shit a safe incoming player can take shot or make you shoot again
I know several pro's who like that format it does take a 2 way shot out of play somthing I consider a skill but that's because I'm not a pro and miss more shots than they do ,, but to better define the lines of pro amateur I like it

BB's are great for players they are not accomplished enough to play on a 9 ft table. THE only reason the 'pros' play on them is for money. To think an accomplished pro level player would choose to play on a BB is ludicrous, IMO. They only do so because they are not given an option. BB tables are an American invention to make money. They are not seen in tournaments in the Philippines, China or anywhere in Europe as far as I know. Which is where pool is growing BTW... Yes I think BB's are fine in a bar BUT have no place in professional pool.. JMO!

BB used to stand for something nice like Beautiful Babe, Batman Begins
Now BB stands for unsavory stuff like Bonus Ball, BarBox :)

Personally pros on a barbox is much more exciting to watch. Going for shots on the kiddie tables they would play safe on the big boy table. Sorry not a fan of defense defense defense. I know it's a skill and their living on the line. I like offense.

If you are self employed (like Pro players) you gotta go where the money is. If it's in bar boxes, that is where you will find them.

The other side the coins is there aren't a lot of pool rooms that have enough 9 footers to put on a big tourney in a reasonable time frame, unless you want to finish the last "match of the day" at 5AM and get started again at 9AM. I been in a few of them, no thanks.

As far as sweating pro matches on bar boxes, I'm not a fan. Since they swapped to bar boxes at the BCA in the Rio, I haven't watch more than a hand full of matches, and most of those were on the closed circuit TV in the room as there was nothing else on TV. Those bleachers are absolutely terrible. When they had it at the old Riv on 9 footers, I bought a VIP seat every single day I was there.

You got that part right. The pros will go where the money is and well they should. I'm not too worried about them adjusting to a 9' table either. They'll be just fine.

I started on 9 footers and recall not liking to shoot on barboxes. Then I hurt my shoulder and found that barboxes were easier on it because of the shorter distance on long shots. I've come to develop an absolute love for barbox pool. I love how there is less open space and playing position can often require greater creativity because of that. My shoulder has been feeling better recently and I've tried to play a little on a 9 footer. I wasn't too bad, but I just didn't enjoy it as much. It wasn't because I didn't play as good on it, because I love a challenge. I simply didn't like how much open space there was on the table. Maybe someday I can gain a greater appreciation for big table pool again, but for now I just have way more fun on a barbox. So much so, that I won't be playing on a 9 footer anytime soon unless that was the only table available.

And I think you are wrong about pros only playing on them for money. I don't know any pros personally but I'm sure that some of them simply enjoy playing barbox pool more. The difference between these tables is not size alone.

I never said anything about getting rid of Bar Boxes. In fact, by the time my pool playing days were over, I had probably played more on 7' then the 9'. Johnnyt

I won lots of money on bar tables. There was tons of action on bar tables years ago.

Yep, a blue collar living could be made part time from late 1950's to around the late 1980's from the Northeast to the Southeast, you had to be smart and careful in a lot of the bars...mostly in the South. Johnnyt

I made more money in the bars part-time playing nights than I did full-time working in the days. Easy money back then! I'd go into every bar in town and outside of town and put my quarter down on any money game in the house. I'd leave with everybody's money before they quit or the night was over.

Barbox

I just think there is too much whining in pool period. If it's not the size of the table it's specialized equipment or the rules of play. Just toughen up and jump in the grease.

Size matters...

Yes, and PGA Tour golfers should play from the forward tees. Because, in the end, there's not really that much difference.

"As far as you know" was a good qualifier. Since what you stated is just plain not fact. In the past, many pros played many money matches on the BB. And, in Europe and China, there are many BB. Try looking up Chinese 8 ball for starters. The real money in Europe and China is on the BB.

Neil, when you say Chinese 8-Ball, are you talking about the 8-Ball variant where object balls are caromed off the cue ball? I do not know what tables are most common for that game.

But the current big-money Chinese 8-Ball tournaments are played on 4½' x 9' tables with 2 1/4" balls but snooker-type pockets. Those are the tables on which Darren Appleton won a big event in 2015 and took 3rd in 2016.

My mistake then, I thought the Chinese 8 ball was smaller tables with tight pockets.
