Top tier cue makers.

everyone has their favorites but from my perspective on collecting it seems to me that the demand and dollars seem to go to:

Searing
Showman
Hercek
Hailey
Gina
Szamboti
Black Boar
Tascarella
Southwest

All the other guys listed here make jamup cues, but they just dont seem to pull as hard for the collector dollars as similar cue from other guys.

Collector Dollars how about Thomas Wayne, he's had a few in the stratosphere as far as price goes.

Leon Sly might not be top ten yet but he's climing the ladder. Keep an eye out guys and dolls !!
"country" Bob

I second that...with his classic style cues, work ethic and attention to detail it's not long before he starts getting a higher level of recognition for the top notch cue maker he is. All I can say is that I'm glad I have my cue on order now before the masses see and play with what he produces. Doesn't hurt that he's a great guy to work with either.

Maybe we need to start a list of New School Top Tier Cue makers as well :D Just too many guys that are so damn good but don't have 20 to 40 years of notoriety.

Another vote for Bobby... and Two More!!!

What about Bobby Hunter?

I don't know much about his cues, but based on reputation alone, he should be on the list or on a short waiting list.

Also, can't imagine having a top-tier cuemaker list, without Tony Sciannella "Black Boar".

I just picked up a Bobby Hunter cue, and have played with cues from a lot of the makers on OP's first list and agree - Bobby should replace a few on that list!

I would add Two to that list as well:

Randy Mobley: If he is not on that list, than you have never seen one of his cues!

Rick Howard: If there was an "Under Rated Cue Maker" award, Rick Howard would win it hands down. His work is just phenomenal, and his prices are beyond reasonable.

There are only 9 listed - were you going to say Tad? This is pretty good, but Schick deserves to be on the list for sure. I would put him on instead of Southwest. Southwest builds a great cue, but they don't build the big fancy monster cues anymore.

I would put Tad and Schick on the list, add Bill Stroud instead of Ron Haley - only bumping off Haley not because he does not do awesome cues, but because Stroud has been around so much longer. If I bumped the lovable John Showman instead of Haley, well, that would be one less Christmas card - and it's one I look really forward to!

So, My favorite 10 list would certainly be:

Searing
Showman
Hercek
Schick
Gina
Szamboti
Black Boar
Tascarella
JossWest (Stroud)
Tad

In the early to mid nineties rick howard made a bunch of plain cues for some guys in the chicago area. Some of those butts warped. I have a Rick Howard break cue that basically fell apart in a few months. never again

It's kinda funny, there have been a few cuemakers mentioned in this thread that I can recall turning out some real junk. Glue lines, weak a-joint, warping, shaft collars don't line up...you name it. To each his own I guess. It's no use mentioning names because people get all wound up about it. In their defense, most have probably worked out their problems and turned out a nice cue.

Nice top 10. I'd say ours match perfectly. 10 is easy. It's cutting to 5 that's tough tough tough. I'll start with 2, the easy 2 (on this forum anyway) and say Searing and Barry. Care to add 1 or 2 or 3?

I will add Showman and Hercek. Thought my original list pretty much hit the mark. But who is the best is just supposition. Maybe i should of made the list most collectible?

Dale Perry is Da Man!!!!!!!!!!

Dale Perry is the best
- great hitting cue
- reasonable price
- great service
- pisses off collectors who spend $1000+ on crap
- may not be a collectors cue or poor resale value, but hits perfect

I'm not a collector but you don.t know what your talking about.Sorry.if you have ever watched some of the best you would understand. there is a reason he sells 100 dollar cues and the others can get 10 thousand.
DP has lost his rep because of shoddy work period.
You don.t know cue construction otherwise you wouldn't make this statement.
If you like Dps cues you will really like Eddie Wheats cues also.

I'm glad you said it, so I didn't have to. And the Eddie Wheat line cracked me up, so kudos there.

My top 5 would be:

Barry Szamboti
Bill Schick
Ernie
Tad
and Bill Stroud

In my mind, these are the living legend cuemakers. It has to do with longevity, innovation, body of work they've produced, and peer reputation.

There is a new tier of talented machinist/cuemaker who have come along whose cues belong with the best of them, but these 5 in my mind stand out.

(aloha from Hawaii)

good addition Javi2
Bob Frey is a great cue maker
And, he can make any type of cue
I've known Bob since he started with Tim Scruggs. he did a lot of the inlay work on Tims cues for the first 8 yrs Tim made cues.
I own many Freys and would't part with them.
here are 2 " fancy " cues he made

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Marcus Dienst? I mean come on, even though he isn't from America, doesn't mean that he isn't one of the best alive. His cues are masterpieces of artwork. Name a cue maker that can touch one of these besides Black Boar or Richard Black?
