Well, I've been thinking of trying some Triangle chalk, and anytime I read a thread on chalk, everyone who's tried Triangle has loved it! Yet Triangle and Master's is both made by Tweeden. So is there really a difference?

I don't love it. Triangle tips, yes. Or at least, used to. Triangle chalk, no. Never liked it.

Yes, there's a difference. It's a differenet formulation. I know people have said they're the same, but I think maybe they misunderstood Tweeten. I talk to Tweeten's Skip Nemecek every time one of these rumors comes up, just to make sure I heard him right. And Triangle and Masters are different formulations.

These should be part of a Tweeten FAQ:

All Master chalks only differ in the tiny amount of color that they add. They don't think the color should make any difference. In my industry, color addition makes a difference. People who use Masters observe a difference.

The Master chalk with the American flag was put on after 911 to show patriotism. It's the same formulation they've used forever.

The only change Tweeten has made in their chalks is to change the pigments that had lead in them. That was just a couple of the colors. Blue wasn't one of them.

All Tweeten tips are made from waterbuffalo hide.

Elkmasters aren't impregnated with chalk. They're blue throughout because they are blue chromium tanned leather. The outer "shell" is Masters Blue, used to tumble the edges.

Billiard chalk is made from sand, not chalk.

I used to use Master but it is not the same as it was 5 years ago. It doesn't cover as well as it once did. I find Triangle gives me better coverage and I don't need to use as much.

Around here, it's not Silver Cup, it's Silver Crap.

I was using triangle but recently switched back to masters. The masters seems to go on a little thicker.

If you're having problems with Master it's probably just old. I havn't used Triangle for years but only because it's never around. Used to use it all the time but only because that's what they had. Now I came up with a novil idea. Why not buy my own chalk? Guess what? If you get fresh chalk your problems go away. Triangle is probably great chalk and from what I hear it is slightly different. Other than that I think it's the same question of what's the best tip. The answer is all personal and mental.

I use the OLD Triangle chalk. From back when it was made by Kieckhefers. It really has a different consistency than the new stuff. It's much smoother & "creamier" than Tweetens Triangle or even Masters. I'm lucky enough to have found a few gross that should last my lifetime.

That is a cool picture.

its gotta be blue masters.i tried some kind of cheap chalk at a friends house recently. it was red.after about 3 miscues i quit blaming my tip.

Masters has always been a good choice. I've had no complaints about Silver Cup though, it's good as well.

National tournament was a favorite also.

i use grey masters because it doesn't stain everything in sight. works just as well as the blue color for me. but some people say the other colors don't work as well. i've not used triangle a lot, but i've heard a lot of people say that it works better than masters in humid conditions.

Masters V Triangle

Since this is a predominantly 9 Ball site, I voted for Masters, as I have found it superior to Triangle with the 2 1/4" balls and 13mm tip. However, when I play UK 8 ball with 2" balls and a 10 mm tip, I prefer Triangle, as do 90% of the players I have meet in Australia. It just seems to work better with the smaller tip, I just don't know why.

i prefer Masters..i had heard that it can be a little different not as good IF it is very dry..

Dark Blue Masters, if it isn't staining my hand, I haven't played enough pool....;)

masters only i use to buy brown or beige so it wouldmnt get my hands dirty but theres nothing like having a blue hand after a tough practice it kinda shows u did somehting, i guess if u want ure hands clean just lightly chalk tip with thumb and finger, but i tend to roll it around

Skip Nemecek once sent this email to me;

"Can' t say one is better than the other, they are made to serve different disciplines! Master is made for pool players while Triangle is made for Snooker/billiard players.

The main difference is that Triangle is made slightly harder in feel to Master. What people always tell me is that Master seems to "coat" the tip more".

Chalk type...

When I could find it I loved using National Tournament Chalk, almost never miscued when using that stuff! It is just very hard to find it anymore.
