Aren't these events really one of the top events each year?...As a spectator and sometime player (way-back) in these tournaments, I just feel like the atmosphere, venue, players, and consistency is second to none...years of great tourneys, no payout issues, few player complaints, great playing conditions, the live stream, accessability to the players, the list goes on...
It is my 2X a year mini vacation and I look forward to going like its Christmas or something...I have been to Valley Forge, Vegas, unfortunetly have not been to DCC but I feel that as a Pro event its gotta be one of the best....I love to gamble on match up's so maybe that is one lacking aspect. But as a family man, it is awesome, as I like to bring my teenage kids to enjoy the action as well,..(who actually have been attending for about 5+ years)

Rodney told me that the event will no longer be a ranking event, and that he will no longer be attending the Turning Stone tournaments. If that's the case, than perhaps other top players will follow suit, and the event will cease to be a top event.

Can anyone shed some light on why this has happened?

Hmmmm interesting. Zuglan does not post here but maybe someone should ask Dana Bufalo about this. He has threads in the tournament annoucement forum.

here is a link the Dana's most recent thread

I could take a guess at it. Maybe the new players 'whatever it is' has something to do with it. I think they want money paid before event is held, maybe the Joss tour won't agree to terms... Just guessing here. I find it hard to believe that the best event in the US won't be a ranking event for any other reason.

In the last 12 months, I have played 2 Turning stone events a US Open 9 and 10 ball event. TS is my favourite event for a few reasons.

- Can't beat the entry (half to 3rd as the other two)
- Great layout/venue
- Very high level of play for the $
- Twice a year

Nathan,

The Turning Stone was a top event before the BCA decided to use it for ranking. With or without Rodney Morris, it will continue to be one of the best pool tournaments in the US! My uneducated guess is the new Men's Professional Tour (still being formed) wants to tell him how to run his event. Same as with the UPA in its hayday. If that's the case, there will be a new winner in December. JA's involved. Just a guess though.

The money players at Turning Stone usually get paid in cash money, greenbacks, cabbage, cheesenips. They don't have to wait for the check to come in the mail.

I kind of like that. One year, my partner came in second, and I bought a really cool Native American purse. I love that purse. Cost a big chunk of change, handmade.

RIP, Maynard. :(

If the players association is indeed the culprit behind this (only a suspicion and not even a rumor), than I'd expect more than just Morris to be absent at the next Turning Stone event. 3 of the 4 top finishers this year are part of that association. If one opts to boycott, I have little doubt that the others will follow suit.

Again, I have said it before, I'll say it again, pool players as business people are dumb as turnips. If as you say there will be a "boycott" by the top players for this event, I got to say, this is the dumbest, silliest thing I have heard. What is their bargaining chip? They won't be there? So? Other than Allison Fischer and Jeanette Lee no one knows who the hell a pool player is anyway. Will there be some new outside sponsorship money coming in that I don't know about? Well, that is doubtful since advertising dollars are down for every business and any non-pool sponsor went away within 2 years anyway. If it is industry, then they will play for the same old purses. Hey, they can be just like the woman's tour....three events a year...woo-hoo! That will show that old Mike Zuglan.

Here is my prediction. If the top players boycott the December Turning Stone event, there still will be 128 players. And Turning Stone will be happier, because the new blood will probably actually spend money in their casino!

Don't insult turnips. Rutabaga is more like it. Pool players have been they're own worst enemy in my entire memory of the sport/game.

There was a time that I'd have fought tooth and nail with you on this, but I have to agree with you today. I've been so beaten up by pool, and when I see what some are doing to others behind their backs, on this forum, and elsewhere, it disgusts me.

But I do have to add one caveat. It is not only the pool players. Sometimes industry members try to sabotage their competitors, and I'm not sure why. Instead of working together, they seem to do the opposite.

I don't mean this about all industry members, but I've witnessed a few things that helped to form this opinion. :(

Jen,

I'm embarrassed:o. This is the first TS event I failed to think of Dip and his absence. Thanks for reminding me and the rest of the thread of the Turning Stone and Joss Tour benefactor. How about a photo of "Dip" from your incredible collection.

I feel bad for Rodney, He only won $5,000 this week and got paid immediately. Such a raw deal! I would fight for my rights too.

I have quite a few of Maynard, but this is one of my favorites. He came to me the day before and asked if I would be there at Turning Stone the next day. He had a custom-made suit that he was going to be swearing along with his beautiful Native American jewelry. He loved the turtle, as it was a symbol of his Tribe.

RIP, Maynard. You are missed but not forgotten! :)

I tried to rep you but the system won't let me.

I don't get it. What is it that would make Rodney choose a ranking over getting paid?

Is there some grand scheme I am missing? Is this new association going to put more money into Rodney's pocket than attending this tournament?

Someone please explain what the point of his comments are....

Here's another picture of Maynard awarding Thorsten Hohmann an award after he won the event several years ago. He really, truly loved pool so very much. :)

And what about the other top pros who didn't place in the top 5 and lost money while attending the event? Times are tough, and not all players can afford to travel to all events.

Rodney has opted to only play in ranking events. I see little reason why he should be judged, especially when we do not have any proof whatsoever that the players association is the cause of the event no longer being ranked. Just because he placed well in this event does not mean that we should look down on his decision.
