UPA Announces 2007 World Pool Participants

hi

actually ive been in talks with several companies this month.ive had a few offers just waiting for the one thats just right.anyway i did not want it to sound like the pool industry has turned its back on pool.its just that we have not ironed out a deal yet.

that is what i was saying! there is a thread on the main forum about raffling off a cue.somebody should buy like 3 nice cues to raffle off and see if we can raise money for js to go.he has a good a chance as any american does and should be there,imo.its a shame when the us open champion cant find a sponsor:confused: says a lot to the young,straight shooters up and coming huh.

I am pretty sure most of them have backers and sponsors but surely not for 100% of the day to day expenses. And the US dollar would go a long way in the Philippines but not the other way around.

They go in group with a "game" plan. Someone should interview some of these Pinoys for survival guide to pool.

I know that most of the time they will stay on someone else place to cut lodging and food cost.

Honestly, if you can come up with the air-fare. Some of the Pinoys here can easily hook you up a place to stay.

from this forum we could round up a couple thousand to help out this fine champion.Someone should start a new thread and get this going.And I don't even want to stake you John,maybe you could bring me back a tournament brouchure,thats worth $50 to me.Trust me John,If I had the cash I'd help you out big time.Your a Class act.

Just think of it this way.....if participation on the forum were by invitation, smashmouth would not be here.:)

Much of this goes back to the seldom-discussed issue of promoter's motives. Some have the motive of maximizing profit for the promoter. Some have the motive of maximizing payout for the players. It would be nice to see more of the latter.

i appreciate this everybody but before it gets carrried away im not trying to get people on here to pay my way.frankly i have the money to go myself no problem, but i wont.because i feel that to go over there i should be sponsored like the other players and if im not i wont go.no hard feelings but i will not pay my own way when the companies who make money off pool wont send me.i will not accept money from people on here because they are not selling billiard equip.if my career goes by and i never play in the world championships that will suck but the world will keep spinning and so will i.i have paid my dues poolwise in so many ways i cannot tell you,the billiard world owes me nothing and i know that but until im compensated for my efforts like my peers there is going to be some tourney invites i will have to decline.respectfully john schmidt

You are 100% correct that it's a business decision and it should make financial sense. However, this is a HUGE tournament, the world's most important tournament.

John, can you really afford not to be there?

Some things are worth doing. Come on John! Kick it up a notch, use your charming personality and get yourself 10 sponsors for $500 each, or even better - 20 sponsors for $1000 each.

I know it sounds ridiculous, maybe even impossible, but you have to use a little salesmanship and your charm to do it - You have to start looking at things in a positive light! It's like fund raising for a good cause.

This is how business is. You talk up your sponsors and use your weight to get things done. You're the reigning US Open champion - start acting like it!

You stated this perfectly, and read my mind. If the UPA is supposed to be such a strong force that is capable of determing who shall play, why don't they just step up to the plate and pay the cost to send their selection over to compete. Wow what a run-on sentence.

One of the big reasons that players besides Jeanette Lee and Earl are not known to the average pool player is because they have no sponsorship. If the billiard industry would sponsor more of them (put their picture up in their ads) a lot of players would start to be household names. Johnnyt

Now you're talking. If these players are representing the USA, then let the BCA give them each 3-5K for expenses. Trust me, they've got the money. It's petty cash for them.
 
These Big name companies should definitely sponsor people like john. people usually recognize a sport the winner and champion is from their respective country.

Example: pool was big in the Philippines but it got national recognition when Efren Won World Titles. Pool became bigger than it was and now look at the pool scene in Philippines. i say when you support the players something good will happen.

American Definitely has talent the industries here just to back them so they cannot really do anything to show their talent

I got up earlier, did some stuff around the house, snuck off to the AZB forum, was perusing thru this thread and there it was....just hanging out there, all by itself....."Earl doen't have a chance." :eek: ......I looked all around it, but even though I could not see the hook, this just smelled too much like a fresh dough ball all smothered around a nice, sharp treble hook. :confused: So, I'm not taking the bait on this one. ESPECIALLY since it's just hung out there by my friend and pool pal, jiimyleggs. I visited his picture section and saw that last big fish that nibbled at his bait. Looked like he caught the Loch Ness Monster! So, No. I'm not biting jimmy. I'm not going to debate you on this one. I don't want to be banned from AZB. I'm just going to say "Earl DOES have a chance":)

Now, I'm backing slowly away from the nice juicy worm dangling there on that nice shiny hook....:D

***ATTENTION***
For those who have no idea what this mumbo-jumbo meant, I'm a big Earl supporter and Jimmy is...well, let's just say jimmy's not going to be sending "The Pearl" any Christmas cards anytime soon. We got into it once on these hallowed forums and after we each got assorted thoughts off our chest, we signed a peace treaty and have been buds ever since.

We can talk about religion, death, taxes or politics. Him & I just can't talk about Earl.:D But, jimmy knows how much I enjoy our new found friendship. I get to needle him back when he posts little jabs like his aforequoted post. We have a sort of gentleman's agreement....we now laugh and poke fun (light humor...very, very light.) carefully at each other.
Ever careful not to fire the first shot that may start Earl War 3!:D

That's a bit of a conundrum though because the reason that most companies look to sponsoring a player is because they are already well known.

Personally, I think that anyone who actually reads the billiard publications that are out there will know a lot more players by name and appearance than just Jeannette and Earl simply by virtue of the coverage.

It would probably help though if each of the mags would run a Player Profile each month.
